And to keep the Democratic numbers in the House, let's support Jennifer McClellan in her bid for U.S. Rep in the Special Election to be held on February 21, 2023. Go, Jenn!
I'm with you, Linda. DeJoy is a cancer on our beloved United States Post Office.
It appears there may still be a chance that President Biden will nominate two Democrats to replace two of the USPS board members whose terms have expired. William Zollars and Donald Moak were appointed by Trump. Neither has shown any interest in ejecting DeJoy. They are serving a holdover year and can be replaced at any time if Biden chooses. They must be confirmed by the Senate.
The position by republican congressman Rick Allen that people actually want to work longer (delaying Social Security benefits) is both elitist and uninformed. White-collar, professional, office, or service sector workers - especially younger ones - may say that. Politicians and others who have thankfully avoided the arduous labor of “hard-working American families” we hear so much about, may say that. But few who need that retirement most - and the attendant Medicare benefits - want their retirements delayed. By their 7th decade they are ready for it, they need it, they want it, they deserve it. Many have health issues related not only to age, but also the jobs they did for so long. If there is any “Contract with America” that supersedes all others, it is that when you’ve worked your life to create and maintain the “Great Society” you should get to enjoy the fruits of those labors. Ask the construction worker. Ask the food service worker. Ask the farm worker. Ask anyone who has worked with his hands or worked on her feet all day long. Don’t ask the politicians; they don’t know.
10,000% agreement!!! As a single woman and homeowner, I worked almost my entire life in retail--not a munificent occupation by any means, although I did make decent paycheck (by Maine standards). However, standing on cement flooring for 25+ years ruined my knees, and although I had group insurance offered by the company it definitely wouldn't have covered knee surgery.
I was so thankful to reach 65 and start getting good, affordable healthcare. I had knee surgery a year ago and the cessation of constant (bone on bone) pain has made a huge difference in almost every facet of my life!
I cannot even begin to express my disgust at the tattered, patchy and yet very expensive system of healthcare for working U.S. citizens. The state of healthcare in this country should be a matter of great importance to our government but as long as our legislators dwell in their secure big-money-donor bubbles, nothing is going to get done about it.
A person who sits on their butt behind a desk all day shouldn't be deciding on WHEN others--whose work is far more physically demanding--can retire!
No need for me to post my thoughts. You and the writers below have covered them perfectly well.
If elders past full Social Security age "want to keep working" it's usually that they have to keep working to pay for still being alive.
Don't Republicans know anyone who isn't wealthy? It seems apparent they don't go out in their districts, or listen to their constituents. I just don't understand the appeal of the Republican message to anyone. No Social Security. No Medicare or Medicaid. No school lunches. Really?
Per the CDC, Americans life expectancy has dropped. Non-Hispanic Black people are now at 70.8 years. So, no, they don't want to work longer and collect Social Security for less than 10 months before they die.
There is such a disconnect between the state and national politicians and their constituents. They don't vote for policies that the American people want; they vote the way their owners, the robber barons like Koch and Thiel, tell them to vote.
Journalists and Democrats, and anyone else who has a mouthpiece, needs to call out every stinking Republican who uses the word "entitlements" when referring to Social Security and Medicare. That money was paid into the system by every worker in America, and thanks to rising eligibility ages, too many never see a dime of it back. It's not an "entitlement" it's our money.
But because we paid into the system, we ARE entitled to be the benefits of Social Security and Medicare. We should proclaim that we are entitled to them—and proudly so! Now, about those billionaires and their un-entitled tax breaks…
You are very correct, but Republicans have put a very nasty connotation onto that word - they clearly believe that it's defined as a social welfare system that lazy seniors are relying on, rather than something that they, and in many cases, their employers, have paid into all through their working lives! And self-employed people have paid both halves!
It occurs to me to point out that, while waiting impatiently for the (we hope) eventual indictments, we can bear in mind that the suspense must be a lot more punishing for Trump than it is for the onlookers (us). His REM sleep must be crowded with visions of orange jumpsuits, headlines with his name linked to the word "loser," and other unpleasant images. Toxic is as toxic does.
Do Federal employees have a pension plan that they pay into?
Many states run a pension plan for State employees (so that the state doesn't have to pay $$$ to the Social Security Trust Fund--heaven forbid!)--but payees must hope and pray their state invests wisely and doesn't invest in something stupid that would tank the pension fund.
Social Security and Medicare are NOT ENTITLEMENTS! This is OUR money matched by our Employers. A number of years ago the government stopped printinting SOCIAL SECURITY on our checks and started printing ENTITILEMENT! I was outraged and wrote to my Congressman and Senator to no avail. Their response was “that's the way it is now”! My checks are direct deposit, however, it seems I read it in an article. ENTITLEMENT my ass! I started working at 16 and worked all through high school, College and grad school. Then I started a manufacturing business and worked until I was 60, employing over 200 people. When I did, I left Chicago for Florida (winter finally got me) I did volunteer work for the next 10 years. It has never failed to amaze me that the people in Washington, who believe we, who have worked all our lives, many at menial jobs, are not entitled to what we earned. They receive, I believe $176,000 per year plus benefits such as health care. If they serve only 1 term they receive that salary for the rest of their life. Of course, they are then able to go on to earn whatever they are able. Quite a double standard! No wonder they work so hard to get elected to Congress!
Eileen, we need to fix that. Seriously. As long as the reward outstrips the recipient we will have unqualified, undeserving, and unable representatives speaking by our pleasure. Remember it is by our pleasure they serve. They must first qualify then prove and then be paid minimum wage with per dime with raises commensurate with ability. Also perhaps basic training by Armed forces drill instructors. No walk ons like Santa claws. No permanent residency. Did I forget Peace Corp? Surely we can have a bit of qualification requirement. Something at least like a bar exam for prospective congressional athletes, say high jump 6 feet.
I thought the same thing about the term, "entitlements," until I did some research. For the record, I hate the word and its stigma. Here's what I wrote about it in an essay on Social Security and Medicare:
"As entitlement programs, Medicare and Social Security are often lumped in with government assistance programs. However, unlike many welfare programs, they’re funded by your employment. “Entitlement” simply means that the Federal Government is obligated to provide benefits to those who meet eligibility requirements. In other words, the Federal Government is required by law to make payments to those who are “entitled” to the benefits. “Entitlement Reform” often conflates taxpayers’ desire to reduce handouts with the need to manage the financial well-being of these two important programs. To those who are entitled to participate in Medicare and collect Social Security, the landscape is shifting as the government seeks to reduce budget deficits and keep the programs solvent."
On your comment about Congressional pensions, here's something I found that's at least somewhat reassuring:
Actually, they do not receive a salary for the rest of their lives after just one term. They are entitled to retirement after 5 years & what they can earn is based on the number of years served & their age.
My dad died 40 years ago today. He was 68 when he died and passed away after spending more than 10 weeks in a “persistent vegetative state,” a coma from injuries sustained in a bad car accident.
The kicker? He was on his way to work. At 68. And he was still working because he had to. Despite working from the time he was a young child, he could not just lay down his burdens and enjoy some leisure. He never got to spend his days fishing and enjoying his grandchildren. My mom was left with horrific medical bills - a homemaker who had raised 4 kids. She actually thought about renewing her teaching license to try and return to work, work that she hadn’t done in 25 years by that point. Fortunately, we were able to find her some help via county social services. I wish I could say that their’s was a rare experience. But it isn’t. And sadly, it is more common among the working class Repugs who vote for the wing nuts in charge of the House! Why?
I’m now 68. I could fully retire if I wanted to but choose to make and sell beaded jewelry because I love what I do. It helps me stay healthy mentally (I’m widowed) and allows me more resources to donate to worthy causes and candidates. And help my kids occasionally, lol.
I’m hyper aware of how fortunate I am to be healthy enough to do this work, and also aware of what a privilege retirement is - I had a great 37 year career in fundraising and communications and was more than grateful to be able to just leave when my late husband was diagnosed with ALS. I wanted to be able to care for him and I could make that choice without losing our home or my future. I want at least a small cushion like that for everyone.
As others have noted, Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements. We’ve earned them. Grateful to have elected a President who does not negotiate with terrorists.
Vote blue and help get out the vote! Mantra for us all.
Todays Edition is an example of what is so wrong about media coverage of the Republican Party and their failure to be more aggressive about the truth. The domestic terrorists blackmailed McCarthy to use the rise of the debt ceiling as a weapon and he agreed. Warnings from Janet Yellen about the potential impact on our economy and credit rating were clearly spelled out and yet the Republicans continue the rhetoric across all media. I am sure those perpetrators never gave a second thought to the impact of the decision to hold the debt ceiling hostage would do to their constituents as well as the country. But here is my point why isn’t every journals asking Greene, Gaetz, Scalise and others the tough questions and putting them on the spot and demanding straight answers? These legislators need to be held accountable by the media instead of giving them a free pass. Put McCarthy on the hot seat and show the American people how reckless these folks are. And oh yes where is corporate America in all of this.?
Hah...any GQP "fight" with big business over their "wokeness" is pure unadulterated bullshyte. Juicy red meat to toss to their base. And the MAGA base will eagerly scarf it up without even realizing the poison pill hidden within.
Greene, Gaetz, et. al. are not legitimate legislators. They do not put forward legislation meant to do anything real. They are political performers, trying to look like they are doing something. They put forth bills like impeaching Joe Biden, knowing it will not go anywhere. Can anyone think that Greene, who talked about Jewish space lasers, would have any concept of what the debt ceiling is? Her constituents get what they deserve voting such a fool into a serious office.
Linda’s comment, “it's been 740 days since January 6, 2021” could be useful. How about daily podcast, news outlets, democrat office websites, substack newsletters, personal yard signs, etc tell daily how many days it’s been since January 6, 2021.

Despite the danger and frustration of the whole MAL mess, it's sooooo pathetically laughable that tfg cannot keep his 🤬 mouth shut. He always has to comment at the injustice without taking into account the "injustice" he's doing to himself and his "friends" et al. AND how does he know that E Jean Carroll "enjoyed" her rape? Because ya were there ya dimwit; how else would ya know?!?! STUpid STUpid STUpid!
As for the R's idea of people "wanting" to work longer? That, too, is pathetically laughable, though equally dangerous and irresponsible. Seems like the only idea of work they have is the grift they do to try to keep themselves in office - and employed after leaving (being voted out of!!) office.

Perfectly put.

We can hope so, at least.
May we hope.

Good point. Federal workers are not included in the Social Security system.

As for the R's idea of people "wanting" to work longer? That, too, is pathetically laughable, though equally dangerous and irresponsible. Seems like the only idea of work they have is the grift they do to try to keep themselves in office - and employed after leaving (being voted out of!!) office.
