I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Biden family for how they have handled the challenges of an addicted son, in the public light. Many of us have a close relative or extended family member who has struggled for years and years with addiction, and all the adjacent serious problems that arise because of it. To navigate all of it under a vicious and vindictive microscope, and more importantly, to worry about Hunter Biden’s overall health and well-being has to be extremely stressful. President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have my compassion and empathy from afar.

I couldn't agree more. The fact that the bottom-feeders on the right keep that public light burning brightly is particularly egregious.

I was disappointed last week when Hunter's plea deal went off the rails, in part because it breathed new life into the allegations against him, but also because it set back his recovery and rehabilitation. I hope it gets back on track soon.

Yesterday's hearing confirmed what I suspected: that Hunter was using his name to imply influence with his father, and entities were using Hunter for the same reason. Not to excuse it, but that goes on all the time, whenever there's something to be gained or protected. It's not too dissimilar from lobbying.

I hope Hunter is able to put his issues to bed, and that his father is able to declare his understandable love and acceptance of the consequences Hunter faces, in a way that shows his dedication to both his son and the rule of law.

There is such a stark difference in character between Biden and Trump. One is a choir boy type studious, religious and honest and the other is a bully, corrupt and dishonest. Why can’t people see this.

Expand full comment

I'd argue that the difference is even more stark; one has great character, and the other has absolutely none.

I really don’t know. But none of this makes any sense. I just want TFG and his merry band of sociopaths behind bars.

You said this beautifully. I completely agree 🙏

Schlitz was bad beer, almost as awful as Coors - and both for the same reason, it turns out. Turns out it takes talent to make good beer, and "talent: is not a word that can be used in the same sentence with "conservative".

As far as high school boys are concerned, all the high school boys I knew back in the day were all morons, as all high school boys are. (Including me - I joined the Navy when I was 17)

Of course, those who become Republicans remain morons. Look at Comer, the dumbest hay shakin' shit kicker out there.

As to Satire becoming Reality, I think that started on June 15, 2015. When ShitForBrains came down his golden escalator.

Robert, you mentioned the judge who rejected the motion to disqualify Fulton County D.A. Fani Willis in Georgia. Well, he didn't just reject it, he quashed it, he trashed it. His name is Robert McBurney, Superior Court Judge in Fulton County. His order truly is a gem, down to the last footnote, not just the priceless 'Rumpelstiltskin' allegory. Somebody put the document on Twitter, sorry, on X yesterday with the comment 'Folks, this is what we in Fulton County call a McBurn'. Here it is

Thanks much. I really appreciate it when readers help me link to original sources. I will read with interest.

I only wish he had sanctioned trump's attorney's. The only way to stop trump's abuse of the court is to make it financially painful for his attorneys since they care not one whit for their reputations.

Well, that was the first time I enjoyed an ORDER ON MOTION TO QUASH, PRECLUDE, AND RECUSE so much.

Actually, it was the first time I’ve ever read an ORDER ON MOTION TO QUASH, PRECLUDE, AND RECUSE.

(The footnotes alone are a thing of beauty.)

Thanks for the link!

After your comment I had to read it. Footnote 5 is my favorite. “…(or even a blot on an escutcheon.)”😂

Thanks Stefan. Judge McBurney is a prize, and this order is a rarity in legal work by virtue of being readable.

While waiting for the next indictment to drop, I started thinking what would the Repubs do if there was no indictment? My word, that'd be a travesty for them!

On a related note, WaPo's Alexandra Petri has published Florida's new "dictionary." It's a hoot.

Petri's Florida dictionary entry:

Rep Comer (KY 1st) has come up with a nothing-burger as it relates to the poor Hunter Biden, a family train-wreck if ever there was one. Comer could have had hard evidence of corruption if he chose to ask how it was that Jared Kushner got $2bn from the Saudi's one minute after his father-in-law left office. Has Comer no shame? Is he bereft of a moral compass? Has he completely modeled himself on Joseph McCarthy?

You hit my funny bone, Robert. Had a good laugh. Remember the show “Get Smart”? A new one will come on when the writers strike is over, called “Get Indicted”!

Lol! And instead of going through a series of doors, the show opens with tfg going through a series of judges chambers.

I hope Ohio voters come out in droves to vote "No" on Issue 1. And I hope that a lie is a lie is a lie still resonates with those living north of the Ohio River. "Ohio’s Secretary of State, Frank LaRose claims that the amendment is necessary to protect the Ohio constitution from “out of state” interests." A huge lie. He's in the pockets of an Illinois billionaire hook, line, and sinker. Ugh. Vote LaRose out the next time there's an opportunity.

Robert, thanks for putting the rightward shift of high school boys in its proper perspective. I do worry, though, that what we are seeing there is not the Alex P. Keaton type conservative of the 80's (bad enough--I knew plenty of them). No, I fear that those boys calling themselves conservatives today are more likely modeling themselves on Nick Fuentes. It's a very alarming trend, and one that I think we need to seriously consider how to counteract.

Want to share this wonderful interview with President Biden conducted by Jay Shetty on his podcast. The more I get to listen to Joe Biden, the more I appreciate his deep down, generous GOODNESS as a human being and appreciate that he is the right person in the right place at the right time for all of us.

My favorite quote of the year, so far, in Today's Edition! "DeSantis has run so far to the right of Trump, he is unelectable—and there is no going back."

As a Floridian, I stated that DeSantis would reveal himself to the nation and once he did, his road to The White House would come to an end. That time has come, mercifully sooner rather than later. He is simply a reprehensible human being!

Some of my friends are freaking out over recent articles describing why Trump has a hold on the Republican Party and several recent polls that have Trump and Biden in a statistical tie. It’s the dog days of August and Congress is on vacation and the media is waiting for indictments so they focus on headline grabbing headlines to gather our attention. The election is 13 months away and based on the past 13 months a lot is going to happen that could, should and would impact the election. The economy is in good shape, consumer confidence is high, unemployment is at an all time low and people are making more money than they did in the previous administration and we are doing something meaningful about our infrastructure and climate change. We just need to everyday in every way remind people of this reality. People are just feeling better about things and the indictments and trials will just remind people of how horrible life would be under another Trump presidency.

Any current polls showing Trump and Biden in a dead heat are truly misleading..Trump, pre-indictments, lost the popular vote twice..

Believing he has magically picked up support in the past two years and is a viable presidential candidate only speaks to the complete moral bankruptcy of the GOP.

The approx 12 million Gen Z population who will have reached voting age since 2020 are just the frosting on the cake..

Big landslide coming in 2024..

In an interview on NPR yesterday Trumps former attorney, Ty Cobb, said this: "If we were viewing the Mara Lago case as if it were a piece of art, it would have been painted by Michaelangelo." My paraphrasing, of course. But he went on to say that the prosecution could present an air tight, indefensible case in about four hours.

The walls are closing in. I suspect the Insurrection case will be tougher. But the Georgia one could be Trumps really big nightmare. The GQP apparently exists in an alternate reality. They are astoundingly stupid.

Expand full comment

It takes only *one* guilty verdict to send Trump to prison (unless the judge gives him a suspended sentence or home confinement because, y’know, former American Presidents have never been imprisoned before).

Also, a state guilty verdict can’t be undone via a Presidential pardon. But could the Georgia governor issue a pardon, or commute the sentence?

I wouldn’t want to be the judge who tries Trump’s case in Georgia. (S)he’ll be under armed guard for the rest of her/his life. Whatta country we live in (“the greatest in the world!”)!

I had requested Uline stop sending me its catalogue, to no avail. Now that I see who owns Uline I will never do that again. Let’s all request a Uline catalogue in the mail. They must be rather expensive. Once received, dump it in your paper recycling bin. Perhaps with this added cost Uline will go bankrupt. While this strategy will kill lots of trees it’s worth it overall. And another example of wealth begets wealth such as Schlitz money to Uline’s founding while the rest of us, born of average or less stature, work for everything we have. BTW, Uline’s prices are high; way high. Shop for other sources online or brick and mortar near you.

And, Democracy Docket and local news outlet 'Wvxu.org" reported 7/31 that OH Rs have filed lawsuit with OH Sup Ct to throw out the Nov. abortion rights ballot initiative. The initiative was already approved by the office of the "not for sale" Secy of State, who opposes Sen Sherrod Brown. Part [only part ] of the problem is the OH Sup Ct, based on past rulings and "complicated" relationships of a few justices with other [elected - I think] OH leaders.
