I just (Finally! Waaay overdue!) subscribed to Today’s Edition just so I could write this comment. I too am shocked and saddened by MS/NBC’s hire of Ronna Romney McDaniel. But as our mantra goes, “action is the antidote to anxiety”. SO let’s all take action and contact the powers that be at MSNBC. Here are their email addresses:

President, MSNBC: Rashida.Jones@nbcuni.com

Chairman, MSNBC: cesar.conde@nbcuni.com

President, NBC: Rebecca.Blumenstein@nbcuni.com

SVP of Politics: carrie.budoff@nbcuni.com

Hiring McDaniel is like rewarding our kids’ bad behavior, but on steroids. They need to hear from us. Let’s GO.

I just sent this.

To whom it may concern, and that should be all of you at NBC!

I'm truly shocked by the news of you hiring someone of this caliber. I have been a loyal follower of MSNBC and NBC nightly news because I enjoyed the integrity of the newscasters and reporters. This decision has me baffled to the point that I will be looking for other outlets that don't hire liars, bigots, and racists.  You fucked up, maybe you should rethink your decision?

I know it's blunt, but so is getting stabbed.

Oops, I missed Susan's list above. Too much coffee this morning. Cheers.

This is the one I used, but I noticed someone else in the comments later posted several email addresses. I'll see if I can find that?

This is the address I used, as well. I included the comment that I will change the channel or turn off the TV if and when I see Ms. McDaniel show up on the screen. It's something else when (I just read) even Chuck Todd is criticizing NBC/MSNBC for hiring McDaniel. He's someone I also changed channel or turned off whenever he showed up on my screen.

It's Monday and I might have to start writing again, as I saw snippets of the Christian Welker interview with Ronna and it was just insanely stupid.

Here's what I wrote to the powers that be, above. If it makes it easier and quicker for you to take action, please feel free to copy/paste/amend my letter so that it reads in YOUR voice.

Dear Ms. Jones, Mr. Conde, Ms. Blumenstein, and Ms. Budoff,

I write to you as a VERY faithful and frequent watcher of MSNBC. Since 2015 I have been an avid follower of politics and although I get my news elsewhere as well, my primary source of news AND analysis is your cable network. I feel like I know so many of your anchors personally because I spend way too much time with them on a daily basis. It's not perfect in terms of a well-rounded life, but I lay all of this out so that you understand where I am coming from...as I write this note to complain in the strongest possible terms about your recent hiring of Ronna Romney McDaniel as a commentator on your network.

As I know you are very well aware, Ms. McDaniel was involved in organizing the fake electors who were put in place in late 2020/early 2021 to STEAL AMERICAN DEMOCRACY from the American people. To overturn the votes of the public and place in power HER chosen candidate. Like it's HER decision to make. It's so outrageous, I can't even believe I am typing these words. She has been a trump sycophant for years now (not that THAT ended well for her). She has lied to the American people on tv repeatedly. Like, over and over again. For years.

She does NOT deserve a platform such as the one you have now given her to spout her lies, and her spin, and her anti-democratic sentiments.

Hiring Ms. McDaniel is like rewarding the bad behavior of a child...but on steroids. If you could read my particular social media feeds and see the amount of deep anger, frustration and sadness that have resulted from your decision to hire this woman, perhaps you'd be moved to FIX THIS. But you can't. So allow me to suggest you strongly reconsider and then invite her to take her anti-American self and get off your air.

I will add that now that CNN has tipped in the direction of Fox News and the entire right wing misinformation media sphere, MSNBC is literally the only place on cable, back here on Earth 1 (as Nicholle Wallace would say), to watch & listen to people who hold the same views I do. We need you to hold that line. Please!

So I beg you. Reconsider this decision. For the sake of American democracy. If you don't, you are contributing to the ruin of it. Not an exaggeration.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Thanks again Susan. I wiil try to be as moderate as you in my letter to them. I just went back to Steve Schmid's letter of 3:00 this morning on the MSNBC debacle and it sounds like he is finally back to reality after his insulting ask of all who read him to follow him to support Dean Phillips, last October, in the name of "supporting democracy". The ensuing fire storm left many of us un-subscribing to him after many harsh and profane expletives.

Anyway, it is a good read (you should read it if you haven't) and I thought it might be worth forwarding to MSNBC, as I have forwarded several good (Robrt H. It is bad enough to endure the presence of Scott Jennings with fake smirky smile on CNN but inviting McDaniel to work under the same roof as Maddow, O'Donnell, Psaki and others is revolting. Only in America! And this definitely isn't meant as a compliment.

There is also quite a storm on twitter/x (#MSNBC Hires Ronna McDaniel). Good platform to ask @lawrence, @maddow and @jrpsaki if they have any intention to address the shocking decision of @msnbc to welcome an insurrectionist to their ranks.

…”MSNBC reportedly has no plans to use Donald Trump’s close ally, Ronna McDaniel, on its airwaves.

But according to a new exclusive article from The Wall Street Journal, the president of MSNBC isn’t interested in ever using her.

In an effort to “address employee and talent backlash over” the decision to hire McDaniel, Rashida Jones, the cable network’s president, reportedly issued an alert suggesting McDaniel wouldn’t reach MSNBC.

“Jones told employees the cable network has no plans to have McDaniel on the channel, according to people familiar with the conversations,” the report says. “A number of MSNBC anchors and producers have voiced concern internally about McDaniel’s ties to former President Donald Trump and the RNC’s role in his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.”

I am beyond disgusted that you have hired Rhonna McDaniel. She has consistently lied and mislead the American people, continues to repeat false statements about the 2020 election, and has no credibility as a commentator with any integrity. What are you thinking?

If your goal is to have commentators that have a different perspective than Maddow, Lawrence Melber and Psaki at least have the journalistic integrity to hire someone who tells the truth, recognizes the horror of what occurred on Jan 6th and the lies that Trump and the Maga world continue to tell about the 2020 election and will not lie and mislead in their commentary.

Our democracy is in danger. NBC and MSNBC need to report the news, not create and invent it. Hiring someone who has repeatedly lied to the American people is not only irresponsible it is un American and un patriotic.

If you keep her as a commentator I will stop watching you all together.

"Dear MSNBC—

"I have relied on your network when I need to understand developments in the news.

"It appears I will no longer be able to do that. Why would you a hire a commentator, Ms McDaniel, who is a known liar, who failed to stand up when she knew the legitimacy of our election was being attacked, and who will not defend democracy?

"I favor having personalities with different political points of view, but there are conservatives available who are truth-tellers and patriots.

"I am extremely disappointed, and will no longer watch your network. I’m sorry if your lapse of judgment has negative impacts on your better choices of commentators."

Can you give an example of why having someone known to be dishonest on as a commentator is a good use of a newsroom's resources? This is Tim Alberta back in 2020, and I don't believe she improved after that:

"McDaniel told multiple confidants that she doubted there was any scalable voter fraud in Michigan. Nevertheless, McDaniel told friends and fellow Republicans that she needed to stay the course with Trump and his legal team. This wasn’t about indulging him, she said, but rather about demonstrating a willingness to fight—even when the fight couldn’t be won.

"This is why McDaniel has sanctioned her employees, beginning with top spokesperson Liz Harrington, to spread countless demonstrable falsehoods in the weeks since Election Day. It’s why the RNC, on McDaniel’s watch, tweeted out a video clip of disgraced lawyer Sidney Powell claiming Trump “won in a landslide” (when he lost by more than 6 million votes nationally) and alleging a global conspiracy to rig the election against him."

Expand full comment

She is not a good honest commentator but I am a big fan of MSNBC and I want to understand why she was hired and her value.

Expand full comment

Stephen--I have been thinking about this point. I see she is on MTP this weekend before she starts at MSNBC. I suppose she might be "coming clean," and turning into a Trump critic. But if this is true, won't everyone, from left to right, see this as changing her stripes to get a cushy, well-paid job? What integrity does she have left? I don't see even this "best-case" theory working to preserve democracy. It's too crass and convenient.

Oh, and someone at DOJ said, "No one could have imagined that Trump would ever run for president again." Russian money behind Trump

Russian elite invested nearly $100 million in Trump buildings.

"63 individuals with Russian passports or addresses have bought at least $98.4 million worth of property in seven Trump-branded luxury towers in southern Florida.

The buyers include politically connected businessmen, such as a former executive in a Moscow-based state-run construction firm that works on military and intelligence facilities..." - Reuters

The resignation of Mike Gallagher, timing it so that by his state's law no one can fill his seat until the November election was more icing on the cake. The person trying to replace him won't be getting much financial support from the RNC since Tantruming-treacherous-treasonous-traitor-Trump (TTTTT) is sucking that fund drier than the Sahara desert. Wondering who will be next. The base that TTTTT relies on, with whom he has a symbiotic relationship of White Nationalist Evangelical somethings is illustrated in the movie God & Country. Here is a discussion of it by the filmmakers. One can rent it for $5. I found it very informative. I had not realized how many churches organized buses to bring their members to DC on January 5, for what looks like a big prayer meeting and rally. Only what they are worshipping has nothing to do with the teachings of Christ. It twists and perverts the bible. Clearly todays White Nationalists do not understand that the reason Martin Luther started the reformation is because the Catholic priests with the letters of forgiveness that they sold to the wealthy to absolve them of their sins smacked of corruption to Martin Luther, thus Protestantism was born. While it was meant so that any Tom-Dick or Harry could just decide to preach and start their flock, it was not meant to be a means for charlatans who clearly do not believe the bible to just bleed people of money. It is so obvious to anyone who wants to that there is money for the taking if you just make up big lies and tell them to people over and over. Sheep wants to follow a charismatic leader. That is what they get. Here are the filmmakers of God & Country discussing their film on Laura Flanders and Friends. https://youtu.be/Q8QasbXXNZc?si=YMW5eeVC9vISs2ba

Thanks, Bill. You're right, a lot of important issues don't get the press coverage they deserve. Bad actors intentionally make issues complex. They obfuscate. People have limited time and short attention spans. What I try and do (pro bono) is take current issues (like what Robert highlights) and use data visualization, maps, AI and other apps to simplify complex issues. And let people read them quickly and interact with it. The hope is that more people see through the BS layer and media indifference. I think we are transitioning to a new phase in the election cycle. Someone said that voters select a candidate more on feelings than facts or platform. I think that voters are getting to a point that they are tired of the barrage of chaos from Republicans not only Trump and have begun to see the steady hand and accomplishments by the Biden Administration. I had dinner with my 95 sharp minded neighbor a few nights ago and he said that “ although he is not a fan of Biden ( age certainly is t his issue) he will vote for him because the alternative is so potentially dangerous and he can’t imagine his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren living in a world with Trump as president. He said “ it just doesn’t feel right.

When I read about tRump's rage tweeting ( or whatever the current terminology for social media comment is) I think of Shakespeare; specifically, Macbeth's soliloquy in Act 5 Scene 5, that ends with "....it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." I have never understood the timeless nature of Shakespeare.'s genius as well as I do right now, watching this real life drama unfold.
