Thanks, Deepak! FYI: Ashley Moody is Florida’s AG.
“Florida, perhaps the most vulnerable state to sea-level rise and extreme weather, is on the verge of repealing what's left of a 16-year-old law that lists climate change as a priority when making energy policy decisions.”
Thank you Deepak. College students did a great job drawing the President's attention more closely to our desire to stop the support of Netanyahu's killing of civilian Gazans. I only wish they had done so years ago with the emergency related to our current state of climate chaos and disruption. Many poor and underserved communities that never contributed to climate change will be the most severely effected. Students should be concerned about those communities as well, but evidently this vitally important global problem is not on their SM radar.
Lynn, in 2006 my son, in college at the University of Colorado, was helping to lead an event called Focus the Nation, in which they were trying to do exactly this. Very proud of him. They were able to bring the Colorado governor to the event as well. It has to start somewhere, I guess. I hope we all will keep at it!
The weather disasters and local geography are NOT so closely connected. The atmosphere blends the C0-2 load across the planet continuously. The air pollution in New Delhi has an equal affect to that in Australia on weather extremes in Hoboken NJ. Your point is still correct. Transitioning away from fossil fuels is too much for Republicaon brains.
It is not only about the air. Soil and water are also becoming polluted. We can expect a warmer atmosphere, a warmer and more acidic ocean, higher sea levels, and larger changes in precipitation patterns. Hurricanes will become stronger, droughts and heat waves will become more intense and it's projected that wildfire season will become longer.
“The world’s most vulnerable nations are already on the frontline of the climate crisis. Not only do they contribute the least to carbon emissions, but they continue to suffer disproportionately. Let’s heed the science and make sure that at the upcoming climate talks in Glasgow (COP26) we take the decisive action that’s needed to change course for the sake of the most vulnerable, and the world.”
It was laughable that the defendant wanted the gag order modified so he could respond to Stormy Daniel's testimony "publicly". He of course has the right to testify/respond in the same venue that she, under oath, testified in. Clearly he only wants the gag order modified so he can respond without fear of perjuring himself.
How about the automaton Rick Scott? Bragg should ask to hold a hearing to determine whether Trump asked him to do it to evade the gag order.
According to the Florida Phoenix: Scott’s visit to the Trump trial on Thursday meant that he missed a vote in the Senate on a procedural motion on a bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration. That missed vote was duly noted by Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a Democrat running to be the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate to take on Scott in November.
“As the man who oversaw one of the largest Medicare frauds in history and pleaded the 5th 75 times, Rick Scott finds himself once again in a courtroom today… this time following Donald Trump like a fan waiting for a selfie,” she said in a statement sent to the Phoenix. “Maybe someone should remind Scott that rather than sitting in New York trying to suck up to a defendant found liable for sexual abuse, he should be at work focusing on lowering costs, securing our border, and protecting democracy.”
Mucarsel-Powell’s comment was a reference to how Scott invoked the 5th Amendment 75 times in a deposition he gave in 2000 as part of a civil case involving his time leading Columbia/HCA, a healthcare company. Scott resigned from the company in 1997 following government allegations of Medicare fraud. The company ultimately was fined $1.7 billion, according to PolitiFact.
I hope Mucarsel-Powell is a lot less subtle in future references to Scott's role at Columbia HCA. People can't be expected to know that history, but Medicare fraud isn't very popular when people know about it. She needs to jump right on this opportunity and repeat it over and over--make sure no one in Florida hasn't heard about it.
Yes, MJ. And he will never do it in a court of law where he would be under oath. Oh! Wait! He has demonstrated (particularly on 1/6/2021) that he doesn’t know the meaning of “oath.” Yikes!
Still, he won’t sit in a court room and speak to a jury like he does and would with his public megaphone.
"No drama" Biden who gets things done is infinitely preferable to the interminable years of chaos and drama when tffg was in office and every single day was "what fresh hell is in store for us today?"
We're in this together to keep our democracy going, and we've got momentum!
I wish it were true that unilaterally stopping sending arms to Israel was “no drama”. Biden. This is huge. It may cost Biden the election. How is this different from if Trump would have stopped sending congressionally approved arms to Ukraine? And Biden did this without any demand on Hamas.
Biden is in a very difficult position, but now he will have serious and lasting “drama” with no easy way out of it.!!!!!!
Hi, DK. I understand your concern but we should exercise care not to catastrophize every development. Remember when inflation was going to cost Biden the election? And then it was his age? And then it was RFK? The war in Gaza isn't guy he only issue on the ballot.
I don’t want to sound as if I am debating with you, because I am a big admirer, but it isn’t one thing or the other that will decide the election. Things add up (you listed a bunch, and there are others, for example voter suppression, Russian, and Chinese misinformation) and they all need to be answered and prepared for.
This newsletter and it’s comment section is a good place to begin to think through and express the solutions and replies. I don’t mean to be negative when I see something that concerns me regarding the election and mention it. I accept that I may very well be wrong. I often am.
In my personal opinion, what is more likely than anything else to cost President Biden the election is his administration's failure to unconditionally condemn Israel's actions in Gaza. The recent State Department report, the administration's failure to condemn the horrendous conditions, including torture, in Israeli prisons, and the fact that only one weapon shipment has been withheld are three important examples. If America is willing to finance warfare that includes crimes against humanity, then it seems to me that nothing else matters. America is not the country we have believed it was. In continuing to support Israel's war in Gaza, the United States is moving far away from what is good, what is right. The other day, I was coming home from the grocery store and observed several older women (like myself) standing on the street corner holding signs condemning the war in Gaza. If not for my responsibilities to my ailing husband, I would have been there with them. So, it is not just students, it is older people like me who condemn the Administration's support for an immoral war, and wonder how we will be able cast a vote for President Biden if this continues. I am 71 years old, and have voted in every election since I first voted for George McGovern. But I am very sincerely questioning whether I will be able to vote in the coming election. For a good look at points of view on this, you can watch the Face the Nation program which aired today.
What bothers me about this comment is that you make huge assumptions about what Biden is doing without having any sense of what is likely going on behind the scenes. You seem to be going only on the announcement that certain types of weapons (long-range) will be withheld from Israel if Netanyahu attacks Gaza. I don't know if any of us have any idea what the consequences might be. Keep in mind that the Israeli people are pretty disgusted with Netanyahu and are against the war.
Yes, most Israelis are disgusted with Netanyahu. But no: Israelis are decidedly not against the war. October 7th was Israel’s Pearl Harbor; Israelis have been reacting the same way that Americans reacted on and after December 7, 1941. They have been beyond furious.
Yes, furious at the assault and kidnappings, and rightfully so. But they are also disgusted with Netanyahu's oppression at home and his retribution that is so out-of-scale and has almost nothing to do with Hamas. The Israelis are embarrassed by the near 300,000 dead civilians and the increasing attempts to silence dissent. Netanyahu stands zero chance of retaining office, and that is likely one of the reasons he is prolonging and escalating this war- to maintain a sense of crisis so he can stay in office. I think that scenario is close to an end.
As a fellow reader of Mr Hubbell’s newsletter I consider you an internet friend and do not want the comment section to become an angry debating spot. But I do want to make it clear that I am always thinking of how the headlines are read by those who don’t spend much time on the news, especially reading many sources most of us here do.
So, of course we don’t know what is said behind closed doors. My critique is of how the simplistic headline reads. I believe that a politician needs to act and give speeches that lead to “smart” headlines. We are often pointing out that the media is not our friend. Our team needs to be very careful that the media, that isn’t nuanced, doesn’t have headlines that hurt our cause.
In other words, I am not giving an opinion on whether or not Biden stop sending the arms to Israel but how it will be simplistically be reported.
DK, it seems that you should be pointing these things out to the media, then, rather than asking Biden to speak up (he is) or us to be loud and noisy. We don't need to be, because what we are doing is more effective: a steady reinforcement of democracy. BTW, I am a wide reader of many kinds of publications, and pay attention to many other sources. I don't think we need to waste our time on people who are going to believe what they are inclined to believe, no matter what we say or how we say it. We are reaching the people who are more likely to respond with a vote.
Lawrence was at his best tonight. A rolicking monologue reading from the court record. I won't be a spoiler. If you missed it, hit Robert's link. You might laugh yourself to a very pleasant slumber tonight.
We should never look past the “no drama” aspect of Biden’s Presidency. That's how it's supposed to be. Think about the last few years and the change as 2023 turned 2024. We enjoyed a brief period of calm, but now we have angst and anger. If there weren't a thousand other reasons to vote for Biden, saving our national sanity would be enough.
I’m not sure how many people are paying attention to the trial but quietly I am rooting for Stormy Daniels who withstood a typical Trump attack executed by lawyers who should have known better. The take away is if Trump didn’t have sex with Trump why did he want to cover it up.
One major difference in how Biden is campaigning is he is going to the states and reminding them of what his administration has delivered specifically to that state. The news coverage will be local and the voters see and hear what he has delivered. Maybe focusing on local state voters and the local Biden campaign workers will influence and create momentum to victory.
I haven't been following (too triggering), but I loved reading her responses to the questions. She mentioned that she is no longer the same insecure, fragile person she was as a young woman at the time these events happened. No, she isn't, and I am glad that she is the witty outspoken person on the stand this week.
Another major difference is that Biden isn’t posting that Hunter’s court treatment is blah, blah, blah - a witch hunt. And the irony is over a year ago it could have been settled with a plea bargain that exceeded what most such cases might expect.
Now, there’s calm and focused leadership that puts governance above performative nonsense.
The news coverage, and the Democratic publicity should be more than local. People in other locales should get the idea that a continued Biden Administration will assist them, too, giving them a reason to vote *for* Biden.
Rather than passively wishing that "the news coverage" was better about Biden successes, you should do your part to educate yourself and your circle of influence. It certainly takes almost no effort to dig out these nuggets!
Here are some resources to help you familiarize yourself with the Biden successes to get you started:
Every "media darling" jumps the shark sooner or later. The Trump Train is starting to lose steam. He's becoming boorishly boring.
Consider that our society requires more and more stimulation each year to keep it entertained. Even the best movie and TV series franchises need to take the violence and depravity deeper and darker to milk the cash cow. Eventually, they all end with a thud. "The first 3 or 4 seasons were great!...but then it lost its way." Trump is now entering the world of being trite and trivial - from an entertainment point of view.
Trump IS the greatest threat to democracy in the history of the world. But for many including some of his earliest fans, he is now a blend of flopping and failing. Perhaps with enough GQP dunderheads staying home and enough turnout by thoughtfully terrified Democrats and Independents on November 5th, we'll see that Beautiful Blue Trifecta that will return normalcy and decency to our government. How wonderfully boring 2025 could be.
Find someone who doesn't normally vote. Scare the shite out of them with Project 2025. Ask them how they feel about the brutal persecution of women. Shame them or terrify them - use any device needed to get them to vote Blue. After all, it's only the fate of the entire planet and all its inhabitants that are at stake if the Fossil Fuel Oligarchs reign supreme.
I think you're right. MAGA is losing steam. After a while the same old garbage gets old, just like its purveyor. I'm seeing few if any Trump flags. It's nothing like it was in 2020. Indicative?
I'm far from a political strategist, but the Biden camp needs to jump right on that Trump quid-pro-quo offer to the oil companies. This morning's Navigator Research newsletter reveals that their most recent polling showed that Americans are aware gas prices are rising, and put most of the blame on oil companies, and that most Americans think oil and gas companies are greedy and willing to hurt Americans to increase profits (a paraphrase)
Exactly! Competence is not melodrama or glamour or other jejeune forms of attention-seeking. It is showing up, doing the hard and often boring work, and trying to make the right decisions as much as possible. Thank you for lighting the way, Robert.
May I recommend a superb podcast done by The Bulwark? Sarah Longwell is the leader of Republicans against Trump and she runs focus groups with persuadable voters. Her reports are fascinating. She could be an essential ally in messaging by the Democratic leadership. I hope they will listen to her and Dan Pfeiffer.
Don't blame Susan Necheles for lawyering for a serial philandering, multiple bankrupt, serial liar and braggart. After all, this is really just a golden opportunity to audition for a Fox entertainer slot. And of course trump's team wanted a woman to try to fillet another woman. Todd Blanche and Emil Bove knew it would be a bad look to trumpet Trump's misogynistic story line of lies. I would guess that in addition to worrying if they'll ever regain respect in the legal profession, all three are wondering if they'll actually get paid. Trump does not enjoy a stellar reputation for honoring commitments.
But it should so, right? I mean since it became a wholly owned affiliate of the Trump Organization, it's in its mission statement: Defend the serial philandering, serial lying, multiple bankrupt leader of their party.
Well, it is now. It used to conduct fundraising to support down ballot Republican candidates as necessary. No longer. It's an ancillary to the Trump grift machine.
Thanks for pointing out no drama from Biden. I was so relieved when he was first president to have a change of pace from the continuous drama from Trump as if he were constantly in some sort of rapid cycling mania. To have to constantly be faced with his mania for going on 8 years now is horrific. When I see the amounts Trump/Drumpf is paying to his lawyers. Forbes says he has paid his attorneys around 50 mil, NYT says more than 100 mil on legal costs which includes lawyers, and AP says 76 mil. So, the costs are adding up any way you look at it.
So, someone is making a lot of money even though they are not winning. Trump is getting screwed by them, or more correctly the people who are paying his bills are. He is getting screwed too because for all the money they are not winning for him. Not a good sign for him to be in the White House. Furthermore. Lest we forget. He is looking more and more like a fascist leader of his grandfather's former country. See the BBC series The Rise and Fall of the Nazis for a refresher on what we could be facing with its own Trump twist. https://youtu.be/KcfTOKgDdWQ?si=M-dxFoPzqLXEM7mk
Thank you, Robert, for pointing out the obvious that most of the media has missed: that Trump was soliciting a bribe when a told oil executives to give him a billion dollars.
As for Trump’s lawyers, this trial lawyer’s eyebrows shot up when I read that one of them said to Stormy Daniels, “that wasn’t true, was it?” with nothing to undermine the obvious reply, “Yes, it was.” That’s the kind of mistake that first-year associates make, and if they repeat that kind of thing they are soon unemployed.

All in good time. The media is having a ball with it and rolling with it. They are, for a change, setting the stage for Biden.
Yes, she's been on my Bulwark radar more since Charlie Sykes left. I really enjoy her discussions with JVL, Tim Miller and even Bill Kristol.
She’s become my favorite podcaster. She needs support from all of us. I’m so happy to know that I’m not the only one listening from this blog.
She actually has a great sense of humor as well, which I appreciate a great deal.
Lauren- did you hear George Conway's song to Sarah? My only complaint is that it needs to be longer!
"Well George Conway, he's a man with plan-
got to sit down with Sarah Longwell well take a
stand explain all the legal problems
they're piling high -with Donald Trump oh
my oh my oh my!
He said Sarah let me break it down for
you there's obstruction of justice
corruption to the legal tangles and
troubles their growing fast --it's a storm
that's going to last and last!
Oh Conway tell Longwell all about it
those legal problems can't live without it.
From the emoluments to corruption ties.
Oh Sarah listen close!"

Re: “No drama” Biden…
From Laotzu (#3):
“A sound leader’s aim
Is to open people’s hearts,
Fill their stomachs,
Calm their wills,
Brace their bones
And so to clarify their thoughts and cleanse their needs
That no cunning meddler could touch them:
Without being forced, without strain or constraint,
Good government comes of itself.”
"Giving $1 billion would be a 'deal,' Trump said, because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him."
Trump doesn't say the quiet part out loud - he shouts it.
But who is listening?
Apparently all of us. But now we are paying attention to the actual meaning.
The RNC is picking up the bills at the expense of Republican candidates nationally.
Hi, Stephen. Can you email me with a source for the RNC comment? Thanks! Would like to discuss.
But it should so, right? I mean since it became a wholly owned affiliate of the Trump Organization, it's in its mission statement: Defend the serial philandering, serial lying, multiple bankrupt leader of their party.
I wonder if the RNC can be sued for fraud like the Trump Organization.
