Wait. Just wait a gosh darned second. There are websites sponsored by Trump affiliated people and groups that claim that Harris will allow children to have sex change operations at school. We evaluate this through the lens of dirty campaign tricks. But hold on for one second. Who in the world could actually believe that a kid can go to school where s/he can get major surgery and then go home when the bell rings?

The scale of this nuttiness is quite literally mind numbing: We don't even talk about how crazy it is while apparently millions of our fellow citizens actually believe this is a thing. I'm not talking about the concept of it, the buttons it pushes, the manipulation of it; I'm talking about the "fact" of it. This is no different than medieval beliefs like bleeding people to cure them or throwing witches into the water to see if they float in which case it proves they're a witch or drown in which case they may not have been a witch but oh well they're dead. It's. The. Same. Thing. And it is happening right now in the 21st century and if we survive this schoolchildren in 2300 will laugh at us the same way we laugh at our ignorant ancestors.

And I will add the craziness of a current theory that the Democrats or the Biden Administration can control the weather!! This nut theory was offered to me a week ago by a person waiting beside me in line at the Miami airport to board our flight back to Peru.

I couldn't believe how completely convinced this woman was as she said to me "Well look at all the other things they can control so probably they can control the weather and send those tornadoes to the counties that voted red"

So so true! I spoke with an 82 year old white woman in PA who is an undecided registered Democrat. She asked if it was true the Harris supports abortions in the 9th month of pregnancy!!! She asked us why she did not rebut this when Trump mentioned it during the debate. We countered her with the argument that this does not in fact happen, ever! We also said that Harris could not spend the entire debate fact checking Trump and allow him to determine the narrative. Unbelievable! But true.

I think you hit the nail on the head of the scariest thing of all about this election is that huge numbers of people either are too stupid to disbelieve this crap or worship this man, and that means the people who are driving along our freeways and shopping next to you in the market. I can see how the Jews felt so uncomfortable mingling among people they knew were not Jews. I think maybe the greatest thing about America, from the perspective of a Jew who grew up around a lot of anti-Semitism, is that I don't need to feel afraid. That fear is becoming palpable in America. I am starting to wonder who is seeing my Kamala t-shirt, you know what I mean?

It has always been a "statement" of sorts to wear one's political colors (tshirts, bumper stickers, yard signs, whatever). It is now, in way too many places, also an act of courage and defiance. As a measure of how far we've fallen that's as good as any and better than most. Besides, it's just plain scary or at least scary-adjacent. I don't feel that fear in Massachusetts (though there have been incidents) and I don't even feel it in Charlotte, but I know it's out there and it's justified. Thanks to all of you who face this every day yet keep on keepin' on.

What you said. I am so fortunate to live in San Francisco, but even here, once in a while I wonder if one of my Harris T's might get me in trouble. So far, they have only generated good will - hooray! - but I don't wear them to work, because sometimes I'm public-facing, and we count on our customers/clients for our financial well-being. Darn it. Oh, I should mention that I met a White Guy for Harris person because of my T. So cool!

On Sunday The Apprentice was screened in a packed movie theater in Hamburg, Germany. Democrats Abroad had the permission to set up a desk in the lobby to inform about how to vote as an expat. A member also addressed the audience before the movie started. They are active, committed and doing an outstanding job. And they know that voting expats probably might make the difference.

That they were inviteded to have a presence doesn't come as a surprise. The media here follow what's happening in the US with concern and in utter disbelief – and they are reporting accordingly. In a recent poll 83% responded that the election of trump would be bad. Apart from the candidate's mental issues and the dire consequences within the US they most probably have in mind the negative repercussions for Germany and indeed Europe and the whole world: Putin would be given a free hand to do whatever he pleases in Europe, the fight against climate change would be seriously hampered if not lost and the world economy would go down in a tailspin because of the irresponsible economic measures trump would like to implement.

As to the movie – watch!

Stefan, I heard it was a good event on the Signal group this morning. Sorry I did not get to meet you. I am spending some quality family time before losing my husband again to the US this week. He did not want to go. I am looking to see if it is playing in my city after the day he leaves. It is here this week.

Instead I attended Andra Watkins' talk to Democrats Abroad on Christian Nationalism. She calls it Christo-fascism. The writers of the Project 2025 book are CNs. Their goal is to turn the US into a CN Theocracy. Given that the newer sect, The New Apostolic Reformation, which is a carismatic Christian branch, believe they have to push their lifestyle onto everyone on planet earth in order for God to return and take Him with them.

I was part of a group in Bremen on Saturday that met to help people to vote who need help, and knit pussy hats, and were interviewed by Buten un Binnen media outlet.

We might be better off if every US voter took as much interest in the election as the average European!! As a student back in the '80s I was an international student in Vienna and felt very ignorant about US politics compared with my fellow students from outside US. I rectified that when I came back home.

Last week, "The Apprentice" was shown here in Charleston, SC. Eight people were present, including my husband and me. When I went with my daughter to early vote today (husband already sent in absentee ballot), I wore one of my "Kamala" T-shirt. Of course I had to remove it/turn it inside out. Afterwards, I wore it around town on errands. Everyone who looked intelligent and educated smiled or laughed, and gave a thumbs up. White males age 40 and older either ignored it, or glared at me. Young white men who appeared to be blue collar reacted the same way as the old white guys. I fear that a huge part of what is going on is sexism. If our candidate were a white male, I honestly think that things would not be the way they are now. (P.S. The T-shirt I wore today had a box of Tide with the word "KAMALA" written on it, and the words "gets out tough, stubborn stains". At least no one spit at me...)

This month I have been pleased with NPR's more serious approach to Trump and positive approach to Harris. They have yet to take the complete exposure/transparency level of WNYC/On The Media's Brooke Gladstone. But OTM is particularly excellent at covering Trump/MAGA.

Today Morning Edition does a nice job covering Trump's threats to target opponents, kibosh criminal investigations, and pardon Jan 6th rioters:

And please fellow Roman Catholics, whatever your beliefs about abortion (and ,non-RC readers ,they are more varied among even regular church goers than the right would like you to believe), call out the hierarchy and others in control -- the religious press, the religious orders, the Catholic colleges and universities -- for their sane washing of Trump who in "delivering" on the promise to end Roe v. Wade and all his other actions has fomented cruelty, racism, hatred, fear, and subverted the separation of Church and State, actions that, the last I looked were not what Jesus, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John Henry Cardinal Newman, St. Francis, Mother Theresa, Dorothy Day, Flannery O'Connor, John F. Kennedy or Joe Biden would do. You decide whether Kamala Harris's words about the Good Samaritan at the Atlanta church yesterday that Robert quoted or Donald Trump's venom about "the enemy within" and deporting millions of immigrants are more in keeping with "Church teaching." This is not a fight that will be wound up in two weeks, but it is not irrelevant for the passion we must feel for the work of the next two weeks and the next four years. With blessed exceptions, the Catholic Church failed the challenge of Mussolini and the test of Hitler. The American Catholic bishops have championed Trump since 2016, and it's well past time to "turn the page." And please non-Catholics don't let your RC friends get off the hook about "voting their beliefs." Kamala Harris is brief but adroit in guiding us all to a way to vote for reproductive rights without abandoning religious convictions. Wiser heads than mine needs to speak to Catholics and about Catholics in ways that bring us all not only to reason, but to kindness, care, and love.

Religion is a business, just like any other business from the largest denomination to the smallest little church in the country it requires money to run and that book on the shelf is the key to the money. Some will use the book and do their best to follow its teachings, and well others may not. It's up to the parishioners to make the distinction and the direction their church goes by speaking up or walking out the door. Our opportunity to do the same is upon us now, so let's go vote for what is right and close the door on this despicable religion of MAGA.

Here in MTG-land (NW GA), we're used to seeing pickup trucks waving huge confederate flags on top of huge trump flags from huge poles in the truck beds (how do they get them to stay there?)

There have been fewer of these trucks around lately (yay), so when I spotted one Thursday morning it caught my eye because it was flying a USA flag instead of the crossbars. And THEN, I almost had a wreck when I spotted the flag below it—a beautiful portrait of... Kamala Harris!

I yelled YESSSSS to no one else in my car, and laughed out loud! How delightful that someone is re-setting that redneck stereotype in such an amusing way!

We are all aware of the importance of a number of Senate races. The number one issue in those races from now to election day needs to be Donald Trump. Not his policies. Not January 6th. Not his convictions. But "how can you, Senator (or Senator wannabe) endorse for President a man who babbles about golfers' penises, dances on stage for 39 minutes, [pick 3 more of the dozens of examples]?" If there are debates, ask the question of your opponent. If not make it the the focus of ads and speeches. "My opponent cares so little about you, my fellow citizens and so much about his/her own grasp on/for power that they will not even take the simple and obvious step of admitting that Donald Trump is unfit to serve as president."

As well they should be. I corresponded with my own election officer to urge thinking about security around all voting places because we read here that the electoral college is better positioned to deal with challenges like we saw last time, legal teams around the country are positioned to quickly meet challenges, and cases must be expedited, so that leaves the local voting booths. They responded with assurance they are aware and being wary. I'm in a blue zone and that is exactly where people feel secure but where, for one example, a fire that ended up burning all the ballots would cause Ds the most harm. When your last donation dollar is sent and your last post card or call is done, you can thank your head election office workers and ask them to make sure they, the ballots and voters remain safe.

One thing to tell you…I received an email excoriating our local Dems for having some sort of Harris bumper stickers that said When we Laugh, We Win and and Biden Harris stickers which were cut in half to remain only with Harris’ name. The writer was furious that this seemed prejudice against Harris, to make fun of her laughter and then went on to contemptuously admonished us.

It was signed with a name that sounded very much like it could have come from our town but the address was something like Grand Rapids, Lisben. That’s where I got suspicious.

Our HQ has no such bumper stickers and my county chair suggested it was an AI generated( or phishing) email. It was creepy because it seemed to be on Harris’ side but its aim was to make me feel really bad and defeated. I dumped it in SPAM.

I would add this to the cyber efforts to undermine our enthusiasm and make us feel bad so we quit.

No way. No way!!!

They often have odd content that's annoying or needs correcting or can be insulting. I read that the best results are obtained when they send a pro-Harris email thanking them for a donation to a pro-45 person. The idea is to get you to click/respond. At that point, you rarely have a virus but you are on a list of those more likely to be provoked and leave yourself open to being seeded with one. Might the odd contact be one of those? Arnold Palmer was a class act and one of the reasons professional golf was successful. There is no way in the world he would have voted for Trump. Trump demeaned him and once again demonstrated how crude and vulgar he really is. Hopefully as the Trump campaign gets uglier and cruder voters will finally decide that they have had enough and he is unfit for office. For the life of me I can’t understand how the antics of Trump will attract new voters. A friend reminded me that many voters are not engaged politically or get their information from crazy sources and are not following or caring about Trump’s behaviors. I care and I hope millions more do also.

At this point I can believe they don't think they are getting new voters so much as that it's about the "quality" of the ones they get. Remember how some analyses claim those crazy Nigerian Prince emails are deliberately transparent because they send them out to millions and don't care if they only get a hundred responses because the point of the initial ones isn't to get many responses it's to screen for the absolutely most gullible and uninformed who are more likely to go all the way through with the process of being robbed. I can believe that at this point 45's team is reaching out to those few in each audience who would really go all the way through with some as yet unnamed violent or illegal act when he calls for them. It is possible the point now for his team is for him to be training, grooming, and thinning. For him I think it's ego salve and venting.
