"Biden is the surrogate for democracy" sums up perfectly what is at stake. And he will put up a good fight.

To brighten up everybody's day here is an uplifting piece a friend just shared with me from Wisconsin – one of the decisive battleground states

good article. thanks for the link. From Biden's speech in Wisconsin, as noted in the article:

"This bridge is important, but the story we're writing is much bigger than that,” declared Biden, as he spoke with construction workers in Superior. “When you see shovels in the ground and cranes in the sky, and people hard at work on these projects, I hope you feel a renewed sense of pride."

Not only is Biden a surrogate for democracy, he is also the most experienced person we have for president. He has 8 years as Obama's VP, and now almost 4 years under his belt on his own. Experience counts for complex problem solving, which running a country well requires. That is why our country is thriving and more and more people within it.

Expand full comment

AND, Biden has a wealth of Congressional experience prior to being Obama's VP, both as a Representative for Delaware and as a Senator. One of the reasons he can so skillfully pilot legislation through Congress, work the phones and and play political "poker" (holdin' 'em, foldin' em and calling bluffs) with such great success.

So true. Since 1972!

I wish the media would make more of this. He is proving a truly excellent president.

He is now showing instead of telling. Having worked as a teacher for many years before becoming a therapist, teaching kids how to "show not tell" in our English classes was how our kids improved their papers by giving evidence and proof of their theses. This works in every line of work. I'm so happy to see him doing that inf reference to his legislative accomplishments!

YES!!! And don't forget something like ~40 years on Capitol Hill before O picked him. And learned well from his mistakes!

Stefan, many thanks for sharing the article on Biden’s visit to Superior. I have long been frustrated that Democrats took working class folks on both the south and north shores of Lake Superior for granted and lost both Congressional Districts to MAGA Republicans. My dad was born and raised in Minnesota 8 - the three large counties along the North Shore.

The bridge is critical; the jobs and support for working class folks in the region more so. Biden is indeed the surrogate for democracy and demonstrates each day that he understands the stakes and is up to the task. Let’s all help get out the vote!

It's so important he highlight the successes of the Inflation Reduction Act and other stimulus programs which are huge successes for him. Now that work is actually happening as a result of actions he has taken iin spite of a completely shameful Republican House, his support will increase among disenchanted Dems and He must also continue highlighting the disgraceful actions of Mike Johnson and the House regarding the border. It seems like Joe Biden has taken his gloves off, and I expect that to be a very good thing. He is exposing and humiliating House Republicans for their dangerous lack of concern about the migrants who have terrible conditions they are escaping in hopes of a better life for their children. Go Joe!

At the risk of going off subject, I would mention a PBS Frontline segment that aired last night. It's titled "Democracy on Trial" and traces over 2½ hours the story of the January 6th Committee's work, which has led to a 692-page report. There were many gripping moments. I found it remarkable that there were a number of republicans, who were faced with the choice of whether to knuckle under to the unbelievable pressure to support Trump's claims of voter fraud or honor their oaths to follow the Constitution. They admirably chose the latter. To quote the Wall Street Journal, the segment is "unforgettable". It can be seen at https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/democracy-on-trial/. The thought that Trump could become our next president is light-years beyond frightful.

I watched that too. And watched every minute of the hearings but I still learned from the Frontline documentary. Wish more Americans could or would see it. Hope Jack Smith prevails!

Same here, Jane. I watched the hearings and have been keeping up on a daily basis. Still, the Frontline documentary pulled it all together and reminded me of so much I had forgotten. I was also impressed by the multitude of photographs that reveal Donald Trump's true nature: diabolical.

I found it so powerful that my stomach was clinching up. Those images of him were a large part of my visceral response. A brilliant piece of work!

A perfect word for him: diabolical!

I was glad that they chose to use b&w for the photos. It made it possible to look at Trump objectively and really SEE him as he is, in the context of the program. I don't think I could have stomached seeing that many photos of him in color.

Well, let’s pass it along on social media and to our friends & family.

Thanks for posting the Frontline link Larry. I watched the first hour and it was excellent. I will watch the rest of it today.

I too watched all of the hearings - and there’s more to learn in this production. The photos of the Capitol Police officers, as they watch the footage of the violence during the hearing, is all one needs to see to understand that this was a crime against our country and against our democracy. We must not forget this day, and all that we stand to lose if the fascists take over.

Thanks so much, Larry! I watched the hearings (luckily I am retired) missed the program, but look forward to watching it today!

I took the time this evening to watch the Frontline program. This was a good time to run this well-done summary of the hearings, with the additional material, and a tight focus on the central story. I suspect that many people who would not watch the hearings might watch this, especially those who in the meantime may have developed some uncertainties about what they had been led to believe. Perhaps, they might feel encouraged to follow-up on those uncertainties

I also appreciated the legal commentary that pointed out the constraints that prosecutors will face in federal court that did not apply in the Senate hearings. While I thought some of that commentary was disingenuous, I hope it will keep some of us from having unrealistic expectations about how the trial will go. Personally, I do believe that Trump will be found Guilty, but also know that sometimes trials can go terribly wrong. I pray not in this case.

The United States has become a country of spoiled brats. Congress, the Supremes, environmentalists, all the hundreds of interest groups and their lobbyists:if they don’t get everything they want then WAH! they will throw their oatmeal on the ceiling, or just shut down government. I am weary unto death of these bad actors. I do hope all the adults will vote in November, and in the primaries and local elections in between.

The dispute about immigration reform, while important, is distracting us from a far more serious issue. President Biden's Ukraine assistance package has still not passed.

Regardless of whether there's agreement on US border security, it's crucial that Ukraine aid be separately passed at once. This package has majority support in both Houses of Congress and it must not be held hostage any longer.

Resources are dwindling while Russian attacks are increasing. Last week, both the cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv were hit by barrages of cruise and ballistic missiles, killing 19 people and injuring 120, though hardly mentioned by our broadcast media. This war is a security threat to the entire Western Alliance.

Please call your Congressional Representative and urge them to press Speaker Johnson to bring a separate Ukraine Aid bill to the floor at once. If you don't know your Representative's phone number, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at: (202) 224-3121.

I liken what is happening now with Mike Johnson taking direction from Trump to Mitch McConnell refusing to even allow hearing for Merrick Garland. It frustrates me to the Nth degree. We must stop this hostage taking nonsense by the Republican, especially when the bipartisan immigration package apparently addresses most of the rights demands. It is just infuriating that the former a..hole stands on the sidelines making these calls on Fox entertainment and in reported conversations.

To quote the great philosopher Yogi Berra: "It's deja vu all over again". And, did he ever get that right. It's exactly how a population becomes so inured and deadened to the shocking, dangerous and horrifying. Nothing surprises because you see it coming from a mile away. The job of the "WOKE" is to remain conscious and truthful and aware of the mental and emotional pillaging lies and deception effectuate. Don't let them get into our heads. Write a ditty.

It is really something to see the senior members of today's GOP groveling at the feet of DJT. Actually, that's too kind. They are running scared. He's morphing into an all powerful Rasputin that controls the minds of the GOPs senior leadership. Johnson at first saying that Ukraine aid depends on a stonger border law, and then it doesn't..... is shameful. And a lie. Great look for a "Man of God".

Expand full comment

But WHY is this groveling happening? Who is behind the curtain bullying and threatening these House Representatives? I’d like to see some Frontline or other media doing some investigative reporting that calls out the thugs that are putting the fear in the elected Republican House representatives. There has to be something more than DJT that is holding these representatives back. Who are the thugs that are so threatening?

Expand full comment

It's, IMHO, a confederacy of certain billionaires (e.g. Musk, Robert Mercer, Peter Thiel, et al) and Fox, and talk radio. The first cohort because of a burning desire to pay fewer taxes and little personal identification with or sympathy for the bottom 25%; the second because it sells. Between the two, operators like Gym Jordan, Mike Johnson, Ron Johnson, JD Vance, Greg Abbott, Tate Reeves and MTG have found the wind beneath their personal ambitious sails.

Expand full comment

Could it be that straightforward? If so, that's frigthening. But, these rich folks might be the money behind the threats but I'd be more inclined to think that the thugs showing up at someone's front yard, etc are from one of the groups like Proud Boys. I further note that Roger Stone was right by their side the night before January 6th and in previous settings. Someone should be seriously investigating these threats.

In some cases, the control is self-generated, and makes those individuals more susceptible to even hints of reprisal. In some cases, I suspect some of those people think they are furthering their own chances for future influence (we all can be fools at times). But I think you are right that given the immediate and wholesale falling into place every time Trump lifts his pinky cannot be coincidence. I have long thought that someone was keeping a list of inconvenient truths to be used as leverage in keeping people in line. It just keeps going on and on.

President Biden has a Hercules job. What makes me happy about him is that he is much better at defending the democratic agenda than President Obama ever was. Pres. Obama is eloquent, rather like a minister, where Pres. Biden uses sometimes more popular language, but the language of a fighter for a cause. That is great in this situation. 'Yes, we can', was a great slogan, let's carry it on.

I may be ranting here, but anyway, let's think about Mike Johnson, the highly Christian conservative from a deeply religious state in the South. He's taking his marching orders and inspiration from a thrice married, serial philandering, proven liar, and narcissist. I'm asking: how much further is possible for one man to deliberately stray from the teachings of Jesus than has our former president????

Mike may want us to THINK he's a "Christian," but I see him as another charlatan, who is masquerading with a mild manner, but still selling snake oil and pretending to be Dr. Feel Good. He just wants to keep his job and remain as a contender for the throne, should, God forbid, a catastrophe occurs. THINK what power (and money) he could amass in that role (that's the way he's wired - remember he still has no known income other than his Congressional salary.)

I politely disagree with the Phrase "just about every elected politician in Washington." Since it's well-known that "the Constitution is not a suicide pact," and it is additionally well-known that Trump will destroy the constitutional order if he returns to power, why do we have to agree for the majority to commit "suicide" if the minority pulls off another electoral college scam? If there's going to be another civil war, I'm fine with it being about preventing his taking office, and about flushing all the Republican traitors into the garbage where they belong.

Yes. I like that the German Constitutional court denied the Heimat party, (which one can also call a New German Nazi Party, just like the AfD is, but even more overtly extreme), funding from the electorate, since that is where a large part of campaign funding comes from for candidates from parties supported by a certain percentage of the voters. They said, that a party that is against the principals of the constitution does not deserve funding. People are waiting to see what implications this has for the AfD party. I wish that we also had a constitutional court that would interpret that the Republican party violates the constitution in what they stand for, and therefore no donors can write off campaign contributions on their taxes.

In his "quiet" style, Joe Biden is out on the stomp and beginning a robust ($250 million) media campaign that will highlight his achievements for all Americans and attack the juvenile delinquent MAGA clique and it's ferel leader. Three months from now, I'm hopeful many to most American voters will be much more aware of Biden's value as our president. How much that offsets the sewage spilling forth from FOX and MAGA info sources everyday remains to be seen.

What we need to remember is that we're starting in a good activated place. We don't need a miracle. We just need to repeat 2020 results. Biden is a very, very good President for America and the Free World, thankfully not a "perfect" President. Go Joe!
