This letter was hard work. Thank you again! I have three takeaways from this week:
First, you are so right. The Democrats saved our financial butts. Most Americans are clueless how dangerous this game of chicken was.
Second, Democrats are talking, negotiating and crafting legislation. I believe that none of them (progressive or moderate or "conservative") want to fail. Whatever the size, whatever is in a BBB bill , it will be light years ahead of anything accomplished during "45"s reign.
Third, where is Merrick Garland? I have been generous of spirit up to this point. I have applauded his restraint of public comment. But now that we know that the DOJ is inhabited by insurrectionists, what is he going to do about it? I will say it again. Why is Congress doing his job for him? Where are the investigations of the same characters the House Select Committee is summoning?
Where is Garland?
And glad to hear things may improve near your cabin. You deserve a break (pardon the pun).
Bill, I agree with your concerns regarding the infiltration of the DOJ by coup plotters and the tepid response by Garland to identify and punish those actors.
No one who reads this will be surprised when I say that the Trump maladministration was the most corrupt--and anti-American--in our history. It makes the Grant and Harding administrations look pure as the driven snow. (And unlike Grant and perhaps Harding, the man at the head of the whole shebang was not personally honest. As we all know.)
Thanks, again, for all the time and effort you put into the newsletter. Have a good and restful weekend.
Let's not forget that the victory in Texas was a Garland DOJ constructed victory with briefing backing Pitman's 113 page opinion. As to where is Gareland on the DOJ investigation, awaiting a report from the IG of the DOJ. However, let us pause for a moment what will the lawsuit you envision look like. Who are the defendants you wish to name. Finally, how does one balance the distraction of beginning this lawsuit until after the reconciliation bill is passed and the debt ceiling permanently behind us by year's end. Finally, where will one bring this lawsuit where we will not confront in this country the real possibility of a Jury nullification result?
Hi, Thomas. Horowitz has limited authority (only the DOJ) and does not have criminal investigative powers. He is no substitute for an investigation by the DOJ of members of the Executive branch outside of the DOJ (or even within the DOJ, for that matter). It is no excuse for inaction by Garland re Trump, Clark, Giuliana, Meadows etc to say that Horowitz is investigation failures at the DOJ.
Trump (and others) should be charged criminally for insurrection, interfering with the 2020 election, and extorting Ukraine (for starters). We cannot decline to pursue a coup plotter because we fear what a jury might do. If we do nothing, we are telling Trump he gets a second chance at a coup. So, however messy a criminal prosecution will be, it will send a message to Trump and others that they risk a decade in jail if they try it again. I assume venue is proper in D.C.
I think it is fair to say that neither you nor I know what if any investigation is going on at DOJ regarding what for better words we can call the Coup efforts. If there are none I regret that as well. Between now and year's end the reconciliation package must be passed whatever the amount is finally negotiated by the democrats internally. If no investigation becomes visible thereafter I will join you in calling out Garland as well as Biden.
So happy MV Community has a reprieve from the fire, and here is hoping the relief sticks. As Stephanie Gray says below, thank you, thank you, thank you. The report is momentous, and a first legal step toward documenting the horrors of January 6. Manchin is not operating in good faith. I am going to read the latest John Le Carre this weekend, and ignore most sensationalizing. Excellent advice.
Your loyal readers are concerned about the last couple of days of silence and are hoping that it is not related to the mineral king fire near your mountain home.

Thanks, Stephanie. I appreciate your kind words.

And I can't tell you how fervently I hope I am wrong and will need to issue an abject apology.
Great synopsis of a momentous week! Thanks. I’m glad Dems did better and hope that continues.

Great plan! Enjoy!
Hoping your cabin and those communities stay safe.

Robert, is it possible for me to go back and look at previous newsletters and comments thereto? If so, how?
Thank you
