Well, I guess it is time to trade in my hybrid Toyota, or at least to express my displeasure for their support of Fox. There is absolutely no excuse for Tucker Carlson—he is worse than Father Coughlin, Charles Lindberg, and the Windsors combined in his support for dictatorship. There was a letter from a landlord this morning in the News and Record (Greensboro, NC) complaining about the plight of landlords due to the moratorium. Do these people realize they have to apply for funds? Thank you for moving us forward, and for praising the progressives who are moving the Democratic agenda forward. I miss Gilda Radner, too!

Thanks, Jim. It is probably more effective to express your displeasure than to trade in your Toyota, which has been recorded as a sale. Anything you do is great!

Robert, first, thank you for pointing out that it was the effort of many progressive Democrats that forced the hand of Biden (and the CDC) to issue another eviction moratorium. It demonstrates that these politicians and their constituents do have a voice and can effectuate change.

Second, I read Heather daily Cox Richardson’s column (thank you for recommending her blog). The last paragraph of today’s column was noteworthy:

At a Democratic National Committee fundraiser last night, Biden told attendees that Democrats “have to keep making our case,” while Republicans offer “nothing but fear, lies, and broken promises.” “We have to keep cutting through the Republican fog,” he said, “that the government isn't the problem and show that we the people are always the solution.” He continued, “We've got to demonstrate that democracies can work and protect.”

Biden and Democrats are demonstrating through their effort (the new eviction moratorium, the push to release previous eviction moratoriums, the infrastructure bills and direct verbal assault on Republicans who stand in the way of progress against Covid and economic growth) that government can be the solution.

Thanks, Andrew. I will supplement today's column to discuss Biden's decision to allow the CDC to extend the eviction ban. It was the right thing to do, and it has more legal support than Biden suggested in his comments. Biden's comments at the fundraiser were great, and I may use them in a future edition.

In Ohio , as in other regressing states, we have already seen some of Orban's maneuvers, (think redistricting, not to mention general corruption,) furthered by the "non-profit," "think" tanks of uber-rich right-wingers. I can't help but suspect that they have their operators are advising any an enemy of "extreme left-winger" George Soros as well. We have been the incubator for anti-democratic politics, not the other way around.

Give some kudos to Biden for listening, and not allowing his ego or that of the office stand in the way of good policy. How many presidents have we seen capable of that?

Yes, Virginia, it was a coup attempt. If the mob had succeeded in sufficiently damaging the Capitol, disrupting Congress, or even killing members and leaders, what would have been left standing and organized? A dysfunctional and spineless Supreme Court, increasingly uninvested in democratic institutions, and Trump in the Presidency. Cries for "law and order" would have prevailed, or the military steps in. Game over. Miley was right.

The efforts in Ohio are worrisome. Trump was lucky (as usual) that the mob stopped just short of harming a member of Congress. What if Pence's security detail had been cornered by the mob? Does anyone doubt that they would have used force to protect the VP? What then? it was a near miss on many levels.

I love your newsletter. I have never written in response to any content...but living in FLA, working hard to retire Gov DeathSentence, I literally do not understand the Jonathan Last comments...esp about "not caving to lockdowns." Full ICUs, add'l deaths and the likely serious illnesses among school age children will, I believe, harm Gov in Florida...thanks.

Thank you, as always, for your pithy, smart and yet hopeful analysis. I am chagrined to see businesses whom I have supported in the list of Fox News advertisers. Will you kindly publish instructions for me to reach out to their boards of directors? (I was so grateful for the addresses of the brave officers who testified before the Jan 6th Select Committee. I wrote to each of them.) Thanks.

After hearing the sad news that two more police officers who were on duty during the Jan 6th invasion of the Capitol have committed suicide, I am glad I wrote thank you notes to the four who testified before the Select Committee. Thank you for suggesting that. Hope many other readers also sent notes. They need to know we support them.
