We, the citizens of the United States, are very fortunate to have Judge Chutkan presiding over the federal trial of the former president. Firm fairness in every way. The March 4th trial date is fair to the prosecution and the defense and most importantly to the American People who have a right to see this trial completed well before the 2024 election. It finally feels we are on a solid track toward justice (whether he's convicted or not). Right now I'd like to see the media stop using the word "historical". Between existential things like the climate crisis and the AI revolution which will be as significant and consequential as the beginning of the industrial revolution of the 19th century. DT will be no more remembered in a hundred years than Andrew Johnson is in our time. I doubt if DT will even be the GOP nomination for President this time. Instead of giving so much time to anything to do with DT, I'd like to see regular segments on the climate crisis, President Biden's vision and the accomplishments of his administration, and bringing back civil discourse, strength of character, ethics. freedom/rights and sense of community.

We, the People, all of us this time.

Yes, I would like the media to stop giving Trump free press also. I don’t want to see or hear from him until his trial dates or in the case of Chutkin, in prison garb. She may well lock him up for his continuing childish banter. That would SHUT HIM UP!

Such a satisfying day knowing that those who tried to overtake America’s laws have their feet dangling over hot coals. Eastman will be disbarred by the California’s bar association, there is no doubt. Stupid is as stupid does and I am speaking of Meadows. He took a big chance of agreeing to testify and then had the audacity to tell the Court that his case should be moved to the feds. Why? He did nothing wrong when he was working in the scope of his job as a federal employee, according to him. Justice will win and deny him his request. Then, Judge Chutkin put attorney Lauro in his place when he argued the trial should be delayed until 2026 because he said “this is a show trial”. Honestly, I am thrilled that all of these jerks are being held steadfastly by our laws and rules. In the meantime, we mourn more people who died by men who are fueled by hate permitted by these fools, the NRA, and the once R Party.

The Nuremberg Trials established that "just doing my job" is not justification for failing to actively oppose -- much less taking actions that support -- a system that results in atrocities. In the case of Mark Meadows, he not only did not resist Trump but also actively participated in the events that led to the January 6th attack's deaths and injuries, both on that day and through the years. Hannah Arendt had a thing or two to say about people like Meadows.

Meadows inadvertently made clear that he violated the Hatch Act, which bars federal employees from engaging in politics. Small potatos compared to the Georgia charges, but potential federal legal liability, nonetheless.

When one's lips are firmly fastened to that substantial Trump fundament...the sheer size and scope of said fundament very likely limits the perspective. In addition, Meadows is not the brightest bulb in the outhouse, thus his ability to evaluate "perspective" is also limited.

Meadows' c.v. is a virtual litany of anti-democracy actions. It's no wonder at all that he can no longer discern the difference between legal and illegal actions. That is supposing he ever could, of course.

Well, now I can go to bed with a certain sense that our system is holding. Been a long time waiting, but it looks like light at the end of this bizarre tunnel, after all. Thanks, Robert. Sleep well. I envy you being in the western mountains. I dream of them.

What amazes me is how long it has taken the California Bar to act on John Eastman. Is it not coming up on 3 years since he created the fake electors theory? Come on now.

Clarification needed on "If he failed in quashing the charges against him in Georgia—and it appears he did not"

Appears he did not fail to quash or that he did not quash? Thanks.

I understand your point, but it is clear he didn't quash the charges.

I had that question, too.

If my children were still the age for nursery rhymes and cute songs (they're now 24 and 26), for their bedtimes I would probably be improvising a parody of "The Wheels on the Bus":

"The wheels of justice go round and round, round and round..."

Lots of fun verses would come forth, I'm sure!

And for us adult readers of Robert Hubbell, some day may fascism be so thoroughly defeated that his columns indeed serve as calming lullabies. That's my vision.

I have a silly but perhaps interesting question. Since TFG is getting so much free press with all of his shenanigans and claiming it is helping his campaign and fundraising, is President Biden entitled to equal time?

Expand full comment

Of course he is entitled to equal coverage. He is just not like TFG. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but Someone needs to get out there and keep talking about what he's done and what he plans to do. For example, in this morning's news, the ten drugs whose prices will now be negotiated with Medicare were named. All are medications that are desperately needed by many people, especially those with diabetes, and certain cancers. But is anyone speaking about it? As a party, we need to be louder and tout these accomplishments and his future plans to lower drug prices. For this of us on Medicare who take very expensive drugs (as I do), this is a huge first step. I read it in the LA Times, but didn't hear about It on MSNBC yesterday. (I only watched one program, though. I hope someone mentioned it.) It's not enough to win this negotiation in a bill. He is going to need loud support from Democrats and those Republicans, 77% of whom support this part of the Inflation Reduction Act. How do we get this stuff out there?

Expand full comment

Good question! While there's probably no easy legal answer to my question, perhaps by pointing out the disparity in coverage, we can get some media outlets to try to be more balanced.

I'd also like to see some focus on accomplishments that should be attractive to Republicans, and contrast between President Biden and TFG's contributions (e.g., Infrastructure bill vs. Infrastructure Week).

Expand full comment

That's my thought - about some fair-minded Republicans AND Independents are already in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act drug policy. Because their constituents like parts of the bill!

About getting media outlets to be more balanced in their coverage. How can we do that? I'm willing to contact anyone in media outlets, if I know who to contact.

Maybe we could try letters to the editor of various major newspapers.

President Biden deserves not only equal time but compensatory time say ten minutes of President Biden to one second of DT for the next century.

Expand full comment

We all deserve compensatory time, in the form of TFG's silence. Maybe once he's convicted we'll be able to collect on that.

Yes, We need TLFG free media time - hours every day! (L is for Loser)

Doubt it. Trumps publicity is based on a criminal indictment coverage by the media. What can’t be measured is the impact on future voting.

But TFG is using it as a campaign strategy. I don't think it matters if it helps him in the end.

I confess to taking enormous satisfaction in seeing Trump and his mob lawyers squirm and rant. So too to savor a victory lap in Wellfleet,MA last night when a packed theatre heard a hale looking Jamie Raskin resoundingly attack his MAGA colleagues in the House and enumerate the sweet fruits of Democratic leadership under Biden. We must let the winds of success, passion and anger fill our sails toward victory in 2024. The bitter fruits of the Party of Death must keep reminding us that the vile party’s embrace of violence and fear have resulted in the martyrdom of four innocent lives just last week stolen as a result of the violent rhetoric of Republican politicians.

What a great comment! (Beautiful writing!) I just worry we are not doing enough of getting the news out there. Jamie Raskin was on Jen Psaki's show a week or so ago, also looking hale. And saying great things. Jen is doing her job by highlighting Democrats each week who are saying important things to all of us. We need much more of the same!

Federal prosecutor, Molly Gaston, said at the hearing on Mr. Trump’s trial date in Washington that Mr. Trump is accused of “historic crimes” and that there is an incredibly strong public interest in a jury’s prompt consideration of those claims In open court. Judge Chutkan agreed and said that the right to a speedy trial was not just the defendant’s right but the public’s right to hear this case, not to delay it until 2026.

While it will likely not happen, it would be in the nation’s best interests for Chief Justice Roberts, the chair of the United States Judicial Conference, to have this panel vote to change the current policy in federal courts which does not allow cameras in a federal courtroom or at least carve out an exception in this unprecedented case. Full transparency in this criminal proceeding would fully promote the public’s right to hear this case and advance its respect for the rule of law.

Prosecutors Smith and Willis have rewarded all of us who were frustrated with the process and timing of the indictments with very detailed, well thought out preparation and strategy and were prepared for the legal assaults from the Trump attorney’s. I now realize how well prepared they are and I am thankful they have taken the time to cover all the bases as well as slowly getting witnesses to flip and testify thus strengthening their case. The heat is now on Trump and he will, not respond favorably.
