Yes! Good reminder. We should remember what a difference their victories have made over the last year, especially the dozens of Biden judicial appointments!
Excellent suggestions, but… no one mentions Rupert Murdoch’s propaganda machine. It spews hate, lies, and the most grievous slander to ears deaf to anything else. I agree that the cult will never listen to anything else, but the constant drumbeat affects MSM and every aspect of our lives, whether We watch Fox, etc or not. This was not always so.
They “edit” the reality of chump and such every hour on the air. My sister, a former Repub, is beside her self over her cult son. More than a few of the younger people in my family are cult nuts, to the dismay of the folks my age. They are mad, proud, and loud, and totally deluded in their “righteousness.” All are rabid Fox watchers. And no, Orwell, they do not believe the evidence of their own eyes. And there is no counterpunch, as yet. Thank you for suggestions that can help this effort, it’s never been more critical…
Hi, Jeri. You make a good point that I should reference more often. We need to join the campaign to #unfoxmybox. Also, Fox has a bigger audience on its radio shows with Hannity, Carlson, etc. than it does on its news programs (by far).
Hasn’t Rupert’s “news” always been skewed with omissions, slants, and lying entertainment. I remember O’Reilly’s “fair and balanced” bs and watched a very smart friend become a moron (years ago). Since, they have enticed legions. I include WSJ to some extent, his proof of journalistic chops. And likely one reason many outlets are following him down the rabbit hole. Was not aware of Rupert’s radio presence, but no surprise. Love #unfoxmybox
Truth is a trailing indicator, but it does catch up with the lie. The question for us is whether it will catch up soon enough to prevent a descent into tyranny.
My ivory tower detached sister is gobsmacked. Her daughter is as blue as blue can be. Our large family is a microcosm of a divided country. I'm still a golden rule gal, but it can be a challenge.
I come from a multigenerational blue family (born and raised in San Francisco). Most of my husband's family is also blue, except for one sister who watches FOX all day. I worry that my 23 yo son is on a FOX path. I hope that it is just rebellion, but it is very worrisome for sure. So horrible how many families are torn apart.
Thank you, Robert, for once again providing constructive ammunition of the best kind for hurling a Hubbell link at some pontificating naysayer commenter on another Substack!
The final paragraph of Today's Edition provides the perfect manifesto for how to use the events of January 6th to rebuild the foundations of our imperiled democracy. It needs to become the template for our critical ongoing confrontation with the forces of darkness--a fght we CAN win.
I made a modest gift to CREW, as I often do when you make recommendations. One problem--every time I make a gift, the org adds me to their mailing list and my inbox gets fuller and fuller. Of course I unsubscribe, but it is a pain in the ass. Does anyone have advice about this? It would be great if orgs offered a box one could click on declining emails, or at least opting for infrequent ones.
On my PC laptop, it is easy to scan the list of emails in my Yahoo inbox, then right-click to bring up a menu that includes Block Sender. It is very painful to Block Sender of such noble candidates as Val Demings, but they have solicitation templates that are way too demanding and aggressive for my taste, especially after I just donated. Biting the hands that feed them. I figure the Block Sender is against the aggressive fundraisers, not the candidate per se, although they should be responsible.
For my Apple devices, Block Sender function is more complicated. Searching for instructions indicates that they vary by operating system and email app.
I hope this helps, and I, too, welcome tips for protecting the inbox.
Thank you, Robert for today’s resources. They will help me write the most effective editorials about the imminent threats to our democracy and urge Merrick Garland to announce a DOJ investigation into the planners and promoters of 1/6 and beyond.
Congressman Jamie Raskin’s new book, “Unthinkable” published today is worth checking out for both his profile in courage and his passion for our Constitution. His words and example both inspire and dilute the smog of fear and defeatism.
"With a strong hand, the Lord brought me forth, out of the land of Egypt." Maybe so, but God helps those who help themselves. Our liberation and our liberty are in our own hands. Each of us can play our part. For some, it will be contributing money. For others making calls or writing postcards. Some will write letters to the editor, or post on social media. Others will actually knock on doors. But when it is all over, let us resolve to be able to say, proudly, "I had a part in that."
Yes, we should be able to say that we helped defend democracy not only for ourselves, but when our grandchildren ask us what we did when the Constitution was threatened.
"...the moment of truth has finally arrived...". Well phrased, Robert. This is it. January 17th. A landmark day for our country. Either Manchin and Sinema step forward and do the right thing or they stand back and let the enemies of democracy prevail. There is no middle ground. There is no more room for avoidance and evasion. We can only hope that Schumer is pressing the issue because he has the votes.
I hope you are right Charles. I worry that it is a defensive maneuver to protect Biden from criticism. I also worry that the rule changes will be something insignificant like "senators supporting the filibuster must remain in the chamber." If it means blocking voting rights legislation, Republican Senators will camp in the Senate forever. The filibuster is an anti democratic rule layered on top of an anti democratic institution. It should be repealed in its entirety. When people whine about "protecting the rights of the minority" they ignore the fact that the Framers created the Senate for precisely that purpose by giving small states disproportionate representation.
At the suggestion of someone more informed than I, I wrote to Inspector General Horowitz, but I think a letter to Garland would also be a good thing. It is useless to write to Cruz or Cornyn.
Greatly in support of your suggestion that we celebrate January 6 as a triumph of democracy over disorder and autocracy rather than deploring what a terrible day it was. Thank you. I also wish to add that Judd Legum’s Popular Information newsletter keeps track of and publishes frequent reports on all those back-sliding corporations who initially promised to stop donating to the congressional “traitors” who supported contesting the 2020 presidential vote.
This is an example of what the Biden Administration must over come and frankly I’m not sure how they do this.
CNN did a poll on the economy specifically the stock market.
Here’s the kicker:
[W]hen asked whether they approve or disapprove of Biden’s handling of the market, just 44% said they strongly or somewhat approve compared to 56% who somewhat or strongly disapprove.
In sum:
* The stock market is at historic highs.
* Most people think the stock market is doing well.
* And most people disapprove of Biden’s “handling” of the stock market.
I think this is one example of how the voters are not giving the Biden Administration the credit they deserve. Is social media to blame ?
Your comments for the 1/4/22 are so right on. Over whelming voting has to happen, we all have to work at it in all ways. Phone calls, getting people registered ,card and letter writing..Everything possible . We can't be luted in thing it's impossible it's not we can do it.
Tomorrow, Jan 5 we have to celebrate the victory of Democratic candidates, Ossoff and Warnock and of course Biden, in Georgia, one year ago!!
Yes! Good reminder. We should remember what a difference their victories have made over the last year, especially the dozens of Biden judicial appointments!
No better example of the power and majesty of the vote than Senator Warnock himself, who foiled all obstacles to win the Georgia seat!
And hopefully will again this November.

I am stealing that phrase.
You can't--I give it to you.
Best kind of "stop the steal."
100% Jeri. I am sorry to hear about your nephew. That must be very hard.

The young buying in is more worrisome than the old folks. Beyond scary

Good point. let's see if anyone weighs in. And thank you for supporting CREW. They do great work that often goes unnoticed.
Block Sender might be easier that Unsubscribe.

Thanks, Steffanie, for doing your part! And will definitely check out Jamie Raskin's book.

We will find out soon enough. And in the meantime, we may learn a lot about the intentions of the DOJ when Merrick Garland speaks on 1/6.
At the suggestion of someone more informed than I, I wrote to Inspector General Horowitz, but I think a letter to Garland would also be a good thing. It is useless to write to Cruz or Cornyn.
