Daily Dose of Perspective
The Western Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) is the shock front of an exploded star, still expanding through space 2,400 light-years from Earth. The star — perhaps fifteen times the mass of our Sun — collapsed and detonated roughly 20,000 years ago, when the last ice age was at its coldest and the first humans had not yet crossed into North America. For a few weeks, the supernova would have blazed in the night sky, brighter than any star. No one recorded it.
The blast wave has been expanding ever since, and now spans a bubble more than 100 light-years across, six times the apparent width of the full Moon. The filaments glow because the shock has slammed into a cold molecular cloud, heating the gas until it fluoresces: red from hydrogen, teal from doubly ionized oxygen. The strand crossing this frame runs roughly 50 to 60 light-years end to end.
The light in this photograph left the nebula around 400 BCE and arrived in my backyard on July 31, 2024.

Author’s note: On today’s livestream, a reader from North Carolina asked how they could address the corrupt legislature that is suppressing democratic participation in the state. Another reader sent this response:
If your reader wants to make a difference here in NC, they can do the following. We need to outvote those cheaters by educating voters and turning them out. No need to wait for Supreme Court reform.
1. Anytime canvassing for Justice Anita Earls and the Appeals Court judges. This month”s meeting is 7/22 register here or learn on your own here
2. Enter your zip code into Mobilize.us and find local actions, including canvassing, phone banking and postcards.
3. Find your local Indivisible group and get active.
4. Follow Durham Dems Action on Substack or Everyday Election Activism: The Opportunities for NC actions.
5. Join Team Up NC phone banks from anywhere to GOTV for flippable NCGA seats.
6. Follow Y’all Vote.
7. Donate to NCGA and judicial races. Small dollar amounts in those races make a big difference. Fight gerrymandering with donations to Oathvote anti-gerrymandering strategy.
8. Sign up with your local Dem party to be a poll greeter, poll observer or non partisan vote protector.

Pursuant to complaints of “too many honks” where we usually stage our Saturday protests, our leadership in their infinite wisdom has instituted pop-up demonstrations at other heavily trafficked intersections in downtown Pittsfield, and today we were conveniently located next to the donut shop. Just as many honks, but no one to complain!

On today's livestream, Robert once again emphasized how media attention is almost always 99% on a bad act or alarming threat and 1% on what people and organizations can do.
As to the information I take in and put out, I'm trying to live by a 20:80 rule: 20% on how bad things are, 80% on what people are already doing — and what more we can do.
Given that rule, I recommend Robert Hubbell all the time!
Today at our local Tesla dealership, my sweetheart Jean's 61st time and my 54th, I told two more fellow protesters about Hubbell. One said, "Like the telescope?" I told them the spelling and said, "Like the telescope, Robert gives perspective!"
A simply wonderful Dose of Perspective. We needed it!!
Yet another exceptional photograph, Robert, and thank you as well for the explanation.
