Robert and Jill and Jessica, thank you for coming to Charlotte and thank you for the spotlight you’re putting on the amazing work of the MeckDems and all of NC Dems. Wish I could have joined you - I did that when I was younger but am now one month short of my ninetieth birthday so not as able as I used to be. But I’m doing what I can. I live in a retirement community just north of Charlotte (Davidson) and served as treasurer of Precinct 206 (where Drew Kromer and Greg Snyder kick started the rejuvenation of the local Dems) and this year worked with a team of women at our retirement community to energize and educate Dems and Dem leaning Unaffiliated residents with the goal of getting out the vote and ensuring that they voted the whole ballot. Our group is called “NotJustDems” because we found our message resonating with a lot of unaffiliated and previous Trump supporters. We’ve had a very successful year. Thanks for all you do. Onward!

Yes Emma! Wow! Go you! So proud of you! I am in Myers Park in South Charlotte- proud to say I Canvassed as soon as it was available to do so. I posted this earlier but as a 7 Sisters graduate we organized 15 buses from various 7 Sisters schools ( Smith, Mount Holyoke) to take alumni volunteers from Montclair, NJ and DC to PA for Canvassing! Inspired by you!

Very Impressive!

I'm in South Charlotte and the Friday of Labor Day weekend, one of our South Meck Dems arranged for us to use some space at her retirement community to assemble yard signs and write postcards. (We had so many people show up that they had to start turning people away!) We were doing the postcards just off the dining room and several residents stopped by to see what we were up to and ask if they could get in on the postcard action!

This Iowan is beyond excited and so proud of our state!!! Making calls tomorrow. Thinking about meeting with Robert and Jill in Davenport/ Moline for coffee those months before! We were a little worried, but tried to have hope. Democrats know how to run a campaign with hard work, dedication, and hope for the future of our loved ones and saving Democracy! VOTE BLUE CLEAR THROUGH.

Vote Blue clear through—great slogan.

Expand full comment

Absolutely!

There’s a widespread belief that one needs a Republican Congress to “check” potential ‘excesses’ of a Democratic President. Absolutely not true, now, because today’s Republicans are not a conventional, traditional political party. They are a wrecking ball, not a ‘loyal opposition’.

There will be more than enough Democratic opposition to Kamala Harris’ programs, just as Biden had to struggle with members of his “Democratic majority”. The need, therefore, is for people to Vote Blue up and down the ballot, and let elected Democrats thrash out their differences after the election.

Similar positive energy and canvassing experiences to what Robert describes here in Milwaukee. Our group alone, mostly but not exclusively from the Seattle area, amounts to more than a hundred people, and this evening we heard that busloads more canvassers, SEIU volunteers from Chicago, will be showing up tomorrow.

Just this afternoon right at the end of the day as we knocked on our last couple of doors, my four-person team helped a young woman (a) confirm that she was off papers (all done with court supervision) and eligible to vote, (b) confirm her registration, and (c) pinpoint her polling place. We were all feeling very good about that when a young man walked up to us on his own, on the sidewalk outside the apartment building where we were, and asked us if we could help him find out where to vote, since he wanted to but had a difficult work schedule and didn't know what the early-voting and day-of voting hours were at which locations. With minimal fumbling with smart phones and the relevant Web sites, we got him squared away.

And those are just two of the contacts, just for our team, just this afternoon at the end of a day of many doors knocked and quite a few such contacts. Multiply by 25 for our larger group, multiply again for everything that's going on here with all the other groups working here, multiply again for all the person-days spent doing the work.

One voter at a time. It is building. We can do this.

There are many hundreds in PA— so many that some of us moved west to more rural - suburban R area—-where iI’s a tough go. A few days in on canvassing, and there are some— but limited—positive encounters. Unfortunately it’s Trump, or complete shutdown or hostility 4–1, maybe 3–1, and forget the lawn signs battle, that’s 10–1 but not key. Those occasional good conversations are crucial in sustaining ALL of us.

And they stick in the memory better than the F-you , C—- , N word and B—— and the actual threats. What’s disappointing is the number of young people — women at least as much as men —working class and well off — who say the most mind boggling BS. Kennedy is pretty big here. We’re hanging in there’ll !!

I canvassed today in Gettysburg which is an hour and a half north of my home outside Washington. The second door I knocked on was the home of Jessica Rivera, a Puerto Rican. She expressed healthy outrage at Trump’s despicable denigration of Puerto Rico and its people. All five members of her family of voting age are voting for Kamala on Tuesday. I knocked on about 75 doors, only two of which were Trump voters to whom I wished a polite “have a nice day” and received the same in return. The enthusiasm of Kamala’s voters is high along with an acute realization of Pennsylvania’s importance to the future of our country. More tomorrow. Let’s win this.

This is Brent again.

On my way home from canvassing for Kamala in Gettysburg yesterday, I stopped at the battlefield. I stood in the brilliant autumn sunlight along a fence line adjacent to the field

through which Robert E Lee sent General Pickett's massive assault against the Union forces dug in on cemetery hill. It was Lee's audacious gamble to end the war and permanently establish the confederacy. (Lee has been unduly canonized in my opinion. Most of his fellow officers at West Point from the South remained loyal to the Union and served in Lincoln's army.)

In any event, the Union troops, at enormous cost, held and the United States survived. Now Trump is once again seeking to render us asunder filling his cult members with hate and threatening to use our own military to put down anyone audacious enough to disagree with him. I am filled with hope over the next couple days that the center will hold and that the Union Jack will stand proudly over our republic as it did on Cemetery Hill twice our lifetimes ago. (I know this prose is a little purple but the spirit of this momentous election grabbed me while I was in Gettysburg yesterday.)

Best of luck to us all on Tuesday! 🇺🇸🇺🇸 Rob, thanks so much for all your splendid work and superb writing. You have been a real inspiration to me to get up off my couch and get out and do everything I can to get Kamala elected and the orange fascist traitor swept into the dustbin of history. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Today I worked as poll greeter in Charlotte, handing out Dem endorsement flyers (the "blue ballots") to Dem voters. This was my 17th day doing this. The number of voters you all are sending to the polls is truly staggering -- yesterday (Friday) was the busiest day yet with 50% more voters than any other day. Today was even busier with lines over an hour, where they had been 15-30 minutes before. You are generating votes in large numbers.

After the amazing rally, we had dinner and a chat with candidate Mo Green and Jess Craven. Our candidates are so strong, so humble, such great people! We will be so fortunate to live in a state with them as leaders. And you and Jess are doing such great work carrying the message to all your readers. Thank you all for helping!

A group of us from Downtown Nasty Women joined the canvassing efforts in NY 4 for Laura Gillen. We wanted to work in a NY Congressional district so we could do double duty, to help flip a much needed congressional seat to blue and also remind NYers outside of the city of the importance of voting Yes for the NY ERA to protect abortion and protect NYers from discrimination. This was one of the more fulfilling days out knocking doors. It was a beautiful day and many people answered their doors. You could tell that many of the people we spoke to do not get the chance to discuss who is on their ballot beyond the top of the ticket and how important voting Dem all the way down the line is to them and their families. We had some younger family members translating for voters at their doors. We were thanks profusely for the info. We felt a real connection with the voters. We felt positive after your day. Tomorrow, we have the NY Marathon. My daughter plans to have signs out in Brooklyn while they cheer on runners, many of us are working the polls close to home for the last day of early voting here in NY. Love hearing all the updates!

A neighbor here in Jamaica Plain, MA sent this heartfelt letter yesterday, giving permission to those on his list to share it broadly. Maybe his words can help people here persuade a few "Republican leaners." Thank you all, for all your good work.

"11/1/24:

To my friends, relatives and fellow people who are using their energies and votes to elect Republicans in the US, it is not my place to question your taste in boyfriends or girlfriends, nor your choice in music or clothes.

But your decision to favor the 2024 U.S. Republican party harms me, and makes me very angry with you.

It is my place, and my responsibility, to let you know that, and why.

The Republicans oppose efforts to recognize and deal with the global warming

caused by fossil fuels.

The Republicans claim that global warming is a "hoax." But

they have no evidence. Do you have some? Tell me what it is, convince me, and I

won't be so scared.

The Republican party opposes social programs that help disabled people, families

living in poverty, and people who can't afford good health care. I have friends in all

these categories. I want them to have a good life.

The Republican party has nominated candidates who, in public and private, express

prejudice towards people because of their race, creed, gender and country of origin.

This embarrases me, and harms lots of people.

The Republican party nominees say things in public that they know not to be true.

This freaks me out, since I was raised to believe that telling the truth is a core

human value. Being in a community with people who lie scares me and makes me

fear for my moral and physical safety.

As your friend and fellow human, I urge you to think about the effect your choices

are having on me. Think about your concern for my health, my dignity, the dangers

to me of living in a world of rising temperature, my options if I become disabled.

Take your love for me, and ask if your actions support that love, or corrode and

block it.

with love from,

Adam"
