Especially love that next to the last sentence, Robert!
I would just say, as a non-attorney, that I hope that we emerge with a renewed commitment to the importance of appointing/electing qualified, competent judges. I am concerned when I see judges whose extreme ideologies (could be either “side”) merge with incompetence (Cannon) and/or willingness to lie (Alito) that result in wildly different rulings, given the same set of facts. I know there are many factors and probably many groups (bar associations? law schools?) who need to step up.
...speaking of appointing judges, i heard last night that the upstart from Ohio, J.D.Vance has the POWER to stop the appointing of two candidates for judge that Biden has recommended. Can ONE PERSON stop the show? How is such a thing possible? Mr. Hubbell, can you write about this situation please? There are some "rules" past legislatures have approved that need to be changed! How can we DO this?

LOL, Robert, thank you. If you've ever gone bowling and launched a ball headed for the gutter, you know the futility of using your hand to try to wave the ball back on center. The same is true for trying to control where you want the trajectory to go instead of where physics takes it. For my part, I'll be voting next Tuesday for my primary pick for state senator; then on to postcard writing for whoever needs it most.
The goal we need to work towards is defeating the MAGA movement and the "(Un)Freedom" caucus in 2024.
As more Americans read the indictment, more Americans of all stripes will move away from Trump and his MAGA tribe. The right wing will defeat itself as their lies and disrespect for the law and democracy become clearer to more Americans.
The indictment and pending trial will be a circus. We should not be distracted.
Fair warning: I am cranky this morning. Didn’t sleep well and I have to go for a medical test this morning so I haven’t had my coffee. So this may sound like a “rant”. I am thoroughly disgusted at the outrageous antics of the Republicans. J.D. Vance announcing he will hold up all judiciary appointments over his hissy fit about Trump being indicted. Tuberville continuing to hold up military transfers. The nonsense “whataboutism” spewing from their mouths. If I hear “Hillary Clinton’s emails” one more time I will throw up. Now they are talking about “prosecutorial misconduct” in the trial. The presidential candidates saying they will pardon Trump and even Chris Christie who is supposed to be the sane one now calling Trump out said in his CNN town hall that Biden’s two years have been “disastrous “. I have no doubt that all this will lead to serious Republican defeats in 2024, but my God, how much damage will have been done by then.
A small consolation is that one day, the descendants of JD Vance, Chris Christie, Ron DeSanitis will view them with the same shame that Benedict Arnold's descendants view their ancestor. When our nation needed true patriots, they were traitors.
I hope your medical test results are negative for anything undesirable. Without the results though, I can detect that you are positive for clear thinking, grounding in reality, and valuing decency. Crankiness may be an occasional side effect. Joking aside, best wishes on fast and happy results.
JD is a POS. I tweet him occasionally telling him his grandmother, who was his surrogate mother and seems to be the person he valued the most growing up, is looking down on him very disappointed. Hillbilly Elegy is a good book, but although he wrote it, Vance totally ignores its lessons.
I agree with you, Robert, that Judge Cannon is bad news, but not insurmountable. I don’t understand the defeatist attitude others are projecting.
And now a shameless plug for my friend’s bookstore/coffeehouse. If you find yourself on Colorado’s Front Range, head up to Nederland and Blue Owl Books. Kimba has an amazing collection of reasonably priced and well-organized used books. Plus locally roasted coffee and delicious ice cream. Many an hour has been spent there reading, chatting, and listening to live music. Independent Bookstores Rock!
Bookshop.org is an excellent way to support independent bookstores while shopping conveniently online. I selected my local shop, Books, Inc in Palo Alto, and it receives a percentage of my purchases.
I have incredible admiration for Adam Schiff. If you haven't read his book, "Midnight in Washington", I highly recommend it! His strength of character and resolve should be a model for all aspiring politicians.
And watching today's coverage, Norah O'Donnell became a true media hero in my book! The way that she stood up to Nancy Mace, held her feet to the fire, and called out her misrepresentations was great. The media can certainly be horribly disappointing, but there are truly fine journalists who deserve our respect.
Ignorant airheaded bimbo moron Anna Paulina Luna (not her real name) is the Female GOP eqivalent of George Whatever His Name Really Is Santos. In 2020, she was quoted that she didn't know what the word "conservative" meant.
Where oh where are the FEMA camps the government built to house all the arrested Republican patriots when we really need them?
TCinLA, You make many good points in your comments, so I don't understand why you persist in name-calling, such as in your first sentence. I tend to discount your serious points because the name-calling distracts and undermines your message. I imagine I'm not alone.
It’s his writing style. We can’t all get away with the naughty names and such, but those who know TC are OK with it and him, I’m guessing it’s an outlet for some people! Sorry it’s buggin you (distracting you from the message). Just know I stopped writing nasty trump names cause I was told it did not help my arguments – I’m not known for anything therefore my nasty names were not amusing. Ah well….
TC pulls it off in such a way that it works. It's his style, his personality, and his names are usually funny in the way they skewer their bearers, unlike "tRump" and others which are just stupid. And his style with the names and what he says lightens the mood, which we all need. You may lack the sense of humor to get him, which is fine, we're all different, or maybe a few responses like mine will help you come to enjoy it, but take my word for it, he does a great job.
I like much of what TC writes and shared but many here are speaking truth and asking TC to rethink the name calling that you refer to as his “style.” That being said, we have choices A. Be selective in regard to you likes, B. Go on the the next comment, & C. Accept TC as he is and recognize he won’t be changing anytime soon, which takes us back to A.
I don't think TC is trying to convert anyone. He's providing those of us who already agree with him with information and perspective. I have Robert Hubbell and Heather Cox Richardson for explanations and perspective without name calling. But I honestly think that his name calling and style are a kind of pressure release valve.
I hate when I hear you talk about how some of your readers really taking you to task on your opinions. It must be unnerving. Here’s a reply you can say to them when they’re crawling under your skin: “I believe you feel that way.”.
Nonetheless, I want to see the Trump trial as most of us do. The person who could allow cameras in the courtroom is Chief Justice Roberts. I feel we are entitled, deserving to observe how the prosecutors present their case and what evidence they dug up. No more secrets! If you feel like me, you can email Justice Roberts by going here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/contact/contact_pio.aspx
I agree with you, but in a larger sense: There should be cameras in every federal courtroom in the nation. Trump should not be the exception. So, thanks for the link and I will send a note to Roberts now!
Subject: The American voters deserve to view the federal trial of DJT
Dear Chief Justice Roberts,
One can only appeal to your inner voice/gut that the American voters rightly deserve to witness this historic event. Otherwise our personal right, to form a balanced assessment of a Presidential candidate of whom we must consider to run our country, will have been forfeited.
I believe you have resolute faith in our system of justice thus there can be no reason to keep the American voter in the dark as to the judicial proceedings of this monumental case.
Thank you for your consideration of this vital request.

While DT's supporters didn't show up for his indictment, the media gave us four full excruciating days of bloated DT coverage. Will the media never learn?! Just like thinking women would forget about Dobbs in a few months. DT is not going away and will become more and more malignant and cruel as he moves into the violent stage of malignant narcissistic personality disorder. Stop everyone from drinking his Kool Aid. See the article on Jones and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (Part IV): The Violent Stage of NPD:

What are the odds that the House will vote in favor of censuring Schiff, and is there any way for him to appeal it if they do? It would be such a blatant abuse of power without any legitimate reason except political punishment that I cannot believe the GOP would have the chutzpah to do it. However, I fear that they just might.
The only question is whether a few Republicans will vote "No." The censure is a resolution, not a bill, so it has no force. As Adam Schiff said in his interview yesterday, he will wear the censure as a badge of honor--an admission by MAGA that Schiff has been effective in uncovering Trump's criminality.
Thank you for supplying the link to Representative Schiff's comments to the media about the predictably shameful attempt by Republicans to censure him. His comments were, if I may elevate a simple sidewalk conversation, spectacular.
I was so impressed with him during the impeachment hearings. I am still impressed with him now. I look forward to voting for him to be my senator. And while he is not my congressional representative, I am very proud of him and grateful that people of his calibre are serving in our federal government...and have not been driven out by the outrageously unqualified and dangerous extremists in Kevin McCarthy's caucus.
The Democratic Party needs a new DNC chair. There was a fantastic analysis in the new republic of how we lost the house through mistakes in candidates, and in funding. it is crucial to retake it.
Focus on the election not the trial is really good advice. Listening to Cafe Insider last night with Joyce Vance and Preet Bharara ...they suggested that a motion for Judge Cannon's recusal may well happen when/if she makes a decision that is questionable. Also that Jack Smith has foreseen all of this. Highly recommend that podcast and Civil Discourse. I love the story that he stared at Trump throughout the arraignment.
Calling for Cannon's recusal without just cause (like another horrible decision) would just enhance the probability of an appeal or call into question the deliberate non-partisanship of the proceeding. Let her, figuratively speaking, dig her own grave.
But isn't her previous judgement and behaviors outside of the courtroom such as attending Trump rallies just cause? Isn't it just as likely that waiting for an obviously prejudicial or biased action on her part before calling for recusal will be "read" as just crying when the judgements don't go "our" way? Isn't it most important, given that some faction will decry any conviction no matter by which judge under any circumstances, to proceed to the finish line with all seemly haste... ahead of the Republican nominations?
If Jack Smith asks for her recusal before she makes a bad decision, he would be the one accused of being biased. He's very smart. He knew what he was getting into by choosing the Florida venue and will know how to handle Cannon. There are going to be delays no matter what, and he forestalled one by choosing this venue. We all want this to be over yesterday, but we must trust Jack Smith's experience and wisdom will guide him.
Good advice about priorities, and I'll add one more reminder: The only poll that counts is the one that ends when the polls close on Nov. 5, 2024.
On a separate topic, when is someone going to take Tommy Tuberville aside and explain to him in words of one syllable, with pictures, that it's time to sit down, shut up, and let our military be about its business with an intact and competent command structure?
I visited my local independent bookstore this week and preordered Heather Cox Richardson's upcoming book Democracy Awakening (to be released in Sept.). We're very fortunate to have an Indie bookstore in our very rural area (north Georgia mountains) and I will work harder to support it. Yes, it costs more than ordering from **azon, but then I remind myself that I'm willing to buy a bottle of wine (from local sources and wineries) for almost the same price and the wine is soon gone while the book remains, to be reread and shared with friends! Sounds like a winning deal to me! I'll check out the Patterson book, Robert. Thanks for the recommendation.
Prof. HCR, with a book on democracy to be published, states this morning that historical efforts in US to "seek civic peace rather than justice" [my words] have brought us to today. Ex. provided include foregoing treason prosecutions after Civil War I [my term], & Ford's pardon of Nixon. "Today" can be symbolized by Charlottesville 2017, & J6.
