More Madeline Albright worldview, less Newt Gingrich: The greater good v. “I win.”

Madeline Albright was amazing. One of my favorite quotes from her goes as follows: "It took me a long time to find my voice and I'm not going to shut up now!" And neither should we. Happy Friday everyone!

“Liberty is worth the trouble.” I can’t improve on that! Have a good weekend, everyone.

Pairs well with John Lewis's " Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."

I am very proud of President Biden for asking Congress for 30 Billion Dollars to aid Ukraine in their fight against Russia. Every senator should vote in favor of this aid package. Any who do not should be named specifically and publicly so that their constituents know who they are. Most American citizens are very much in favor of our assisting Ukraine in their fight to retain their sovereignty.

Those Republicans who support our enemy Putin should be treated like traitors and removed from office.

I blocked on the name of Julian Assange in my earlier email - forgive! I'm going to be 96 in October and I can't always find what I'm looking for in my very crowded head. L&B&L

❤ Was going to publish a "This Will Change The World" comment, but then got stopped by the Iris Parade!

Robert, I just want to thank you for this very high quality newsletter. Have been traveling and busy, and sometimes your newsletter is how I get my news and keep up on events. I also know I can trust it. Thank you again.

The lovely Iris Parade was like a dessert - but one that settled my nerves and lowered my blood pressure and didn't add a single pound!

I felt the same calm from the pictures of the beautiful Orestes and the music. Thank you, Jill. ♥️

I am of the era of Secretary Albright and that final tribe of Republicans who were, indeed, human beings just like the rest of us. It hasn't been that long. How did this happen so fast?

As for President Biden, they aren't going to allow him to gain an inch. The press is nipping at his heels and whatever decisions he makes he is attacked for them. As my mother used to say, "He can't win for losing."

We live in a harsh and unforgiving world. I hope we can summon the energy to fight it.

If we don’t fight, we will be living in an autocracy worse than anything we have imagined. If that happens, maybe I can talk some of my family into moving to another country.

Good morning, Virginia. I have thought about it for a long time, but the time is past now. My physical condition, the lack of money, and a 7 year old grandson, hold me firm to the ground on which we stand. My days of running into battle are over, but I'm an old warrior and I also know how to turn and fight where I am. And what better place?

Expand full comment

I agree, Dean. I am in the same situation as you. My physical condition and lack of money as well as 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with another on the way prevent me from going as well. I will be 73 in June. I will fight as well, as much as I can with four orthopedic surgeries coming up.

How do we make people understand that we are headed for autocracy if the Republicans take over Congress and the State offices? I really fear for America.

Well, Virginia, I just turned 76 and my spine is so bad that my neurosurgeon said, "No reputable surgeon would touch your back." I suppose someone might have a go at my neck, but I've avoided surgery all these years and nothing has convinced me it's a good idea now, especially there's no better than a 50% chance that it would really do any good. I'm considering devoting my declining years to feeling sorry for myself.

Expand full comment

Same here. My doctor told me that they avoid operating on backs as much as they can. My lumbar spine on the left has a protruding disc that is pressing on a nerve causing excruciating pain down my hip and leg. One more cortisone epidural and he said if it doesn’t work he will have to come up with something else, not surgery. Well,we can feel sorry for ourselves and still fight these autocrats I guess. The pain will make us feistier. 🤣

Expand full comment

Absolutely. Nothing pisses me off more than pain. I hope the nerve that's getting shoved around isn't the sciatic. That's a pain nearly too exquisite to even describe. And, yes, Virginia, the only thing that gets me madder than pain is these horrid strong men with their wild eyes, zeal, and the complete madness of the truly obsessed. And superimposed on that insanity there seems to be a playbook they follow. It was for me the first tip that Trump was more, and more dangerous, than just crazy and stupid. He has followed the script that autocrats have used all over the world. But they succeed. Their script works. In this country in particular it simply got ahead of us. Even for those of us who expected the worst, it turns out to be worse than we were capable of imagining.

It has been exhausting. I am now capable of reading this newsletter and Heather Cox Richardson. Haven't turned my television on--for news or anything else--in years. On weekends, my grandson watches construction vehicle videos.

I was a bit of a news junkie until the Obama-bashing started around 2012, and I found I couldn't stand it. Since I had already stopped watching tv years before, when I gave up tv news, my house suddenly was silent. I grew up in the woods and silence is my earliest experience of life, and here it is again. I can breath much better.

All of which has nothing to do with the almost unbelievable danger surrounding us. Something has to happen. Otherwise, what? Will it become nothing more than background noise? Just another slice of bad news from somewhere else and, more immediately, a regular opportunity to point out Biden's mistakes. If we become numb to these horrors, we will have given up.

To tell the absolute truth, I am terrified.

"Predicting defeat becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because it can depress turnout! "

This is one of the greatest dangers we face. The mainline press is now in the full-time business of creating the news. Low poll numbers announced--especially with alarming headlines--poll numbers drop even lower. "Democrats Face Certain Defeat." lWhy bother to vote? The Press collude with the administration to bring the real, final end of the world. They have a lot of power, those pundits and journalists. We must vote. We must help others to vote. We must do it even if we feel it won't count, even if we believe we've already lost. What we feel and believe in this case doesn't matter a whit. We vote.

Just got my Canadian passport and am getting out before the idiot right wing shit shit storm. Good luck, you will need it. I am going to spend the rest of my days doing good things for people in need and am done with the American voters.

I have thought of doing that in my moments of despair. However when I read up on it, they would not want a 72 year old woman on a limited income. I will stay here and do what I can to make people see reason. If I can’t, I will not watch the news in America.

33 Billion for Ukraine and and we have food lines, homeless people everywhere, opioid crisis a border crisis, global warming and not a penny for any of this. We hold 100 billion dollars of Russian money, That's where the money should come from!!

Expand full comment

President Biden wants to liquidate the Russian property seized and add their money that has been seized and give it to Ukraine to rebuild their country. We have problems, but there are people in poorer countries who are dying from starvation. No one here is dying of starvation. We need to help each other, give money to aid folks who are in need. The military contractors are going to be working at high speed manufacturing weapons of all kinds for Ukraine and to rebuild our arms. There will be good jobs there. Farmers need to plant as many crops as they can to feed us and those in need in the world. We have got to help defeat Russia in Ukraine, or soon Putin will go after a NATO country and we will be in a world war.

Madeleine Albright was a giant of a woman. She knew what was right and forged ahead. We should all be proud of her and her accomplishments.

She and her generation of Republicans were leaders of whom we could all be proud. Now they are gone. What is left are a pack of liars and cheats who are only out for themselves. Their main goals are re-election and power.

I have read Consortium News for several years usually finding it a reliable source of information; it has been my only source of information re--------------. Occasionally, it reports news as completely different from what I read in the alternate media in the US.

I t has done this is the matter of Russia's attack on Bucha in Ukraine. Do you have read anything that would contribute to understanding that remarkable difference?
