Bernie Moreno fails to see how a “woman over 50” might deign to care about abortion, since it doesn’t affect her directly. After all, since HE doesn’t care about anything that doesn’t affect him directly, he assumes everyone is self-obsessed to the same degree. In his blindness, like too many Republicans, he fails at empathy. This emotional numbness, this intellectual chasm over which he cannot leap, reveals right there why he should never walk the halls of power to make decisions for women over 50, or under 50, or, dare I say it, men.

I continue to be appalled at the ghastly campaign that Bernie Moreno is waging against our esteemed Senator Sherrod Brown.Such filth being hurled at him and us 24/7.Lies,lies, lies and more damned lies. Senator Brown has always been a straight talker and does wonderful work for ALL Ohioans.I just subscribed to his wife’s Substack ( Connie Schultz). Thanks,Robert, for the heads up!

Thank you! I just subscribed to Connie Schultz’s Substack column as well, and contributed to Brown and Tester via Robert!! Couldn’t attend the meeting but am so ready to donate again and again!!

Childless woman over 50 here. I may not need abortion services at this point in my life, but the abortion is an indicator issue. It goes strait to the key failure of Republicans: they do not respect the concept of equal protection of law. Abortion access for women is necessary for them to be able to exercise all other freedoms. No equal protection of law for women if they cannot control their own bodies.

And it's a canary freedom. If they can take away one's right to decide this personal issue, what right will be next?

Yes.I agree.What’s up next? Women’s suffrage.

Totally agree. If women do not have bodily autonomy, we are way unequal in every respect as compared to men.It is incomprehensible that this is happening to us because of one man and his cult.

Yes, the thuggish selfishness implicit in Bernie Moreno's comment above is what stands out to me. In a democracy, and in community, the common good, is what we are called on to serve.

Mr Moreno clearly does not know just how many older women are buying "Vote as if your granddaughter's right's depend on it" T-shirts. I will be wearing mine in two different small-town parades in the coming weeks.

Fellow Readers, Robert was a great Senate Circle moderator for Tester and Brown, two guys whose integrity is unsurpassed in the US Senate. Please donate. We all need their mastery of issues, commitment to constituents and unvarnished humanity!

Expand full comment

Agree wholeheartedly, Laura. Your word on Tester and Brown are on the mark: 'We all need their mastery of issues, commitment to constituents and unvarnished humanity!" Tester and Brown are good people and their opponents Tim Sheehy (Montana) and Bernie Moreno (Ohio) are sleazy rich guys supported by Republican Super PACs. Sheehy made millions on government contracts for wildfire fighting and now he advocates privatization of wide swaths of public land. and bills himself as a self-made man. Robert's highlighting Moreno's scorn for those who support reproductive health care is all we need to know about him.

I'm sending Robert's column with the link for support to friends asking for their help. Like all of you, my wife and I have dug deeper than ever this year in our support of Democrats, and yet I have many friends who, as far as I know, are all for Harris, yet have not been active in giving. I am trying to give them an opportunity to make a difference. And, yes, Robert was a astute and delightful moderator and thoughtful discussant as always.

Lanette—I want to donate, but do not find the link leads to a way to follow through. Can you, or someone else, guide me as to how I can do this in the link Robert provided?

sdo, here is the link: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/2024_mt_oh

Scroll down to the box labeled "Can't attend? Make a contribution instead."

Nancy, I appreciate your response, but I do not see a box of any kind after clicking onto the link. There is text that shows where I can mail a check. And there is a link to the terms and conditions (which leads to nowhere else).

Could I trouble you to be more specific as to where I find that box you describe?

I’m sure I can find a link somewhere else on the Internet that will allow me to make the contribution to these two senators, but I would love for my contribution to go to this project total.

sdo in Jax; On the link that Nancy sent, there should be pictures of Tester and Brown on the top left. On the right, is a column of boxes for donations, ranging from $10,000 down to a hundred. Below that is a box labeled "Additional Contributions," under that is the phrasing Nancy noted, "Can't attend? Make a contribution instead." And that is where you can type in your amount and complete the form on the blue Donate Now button.

Let me know if this works. If not, we'll try another route. Thanks.

Thank you Patrick (and Nancy). I didn’t see anything like you describe on my phone. When I pulled it up on my computer, the pictures and boxes showed.

I did complete the transaction on my phone by clicking onto a link that Robert had provided in the third paragraph: Senate Circle. It WORKED! (The link I had clicked on earlier, leading to frustration, was at least 12 paragraphs into Today’s Edition.

Thank you for your help. At least I have put my drop in the bucket!

Now…on to other key senate campaigns. (I would dearly love for Rick Scott to be defeated by Debbie Michael-Powell in my current state of record.)

Thanks, Robert, for your untiring work and especially for supporting the Movement Voter PAC with the fundraising event on Thursday. You should also take a look (if you have not already) at Battleground New York, a coalition of labor and community groups that is fighting to take back four House districts in New York held by Republicans but won by Biden. MVP is a major supporter. If they manage to flip those seats, the Democrats will likely take back the House in November.

Yesterday as I was driving past JD Vance’s house in Cincinnati (yes, sadly, it’s “on the way”), I noticed a sign in one of his neighbor’s yards that said “ Trump for Prison.” Perfect! As for that egregious embodiment of the sleazy used car salesman, Bernice Moreno, to use an old fashioned phrase, he should go soak his head.

Fabulous colors in your photo today, Robert. They daily remind us of what a small speck we are in the universe and how much is happening in the sky that we can’t see. Thank you for the daily “peeks” into the solar system.

Excellent points, Robert Hubbell about everything. But especially, I was pleased you focused on the importance of holding the Senate and I hope gaining the US House. It was very telling how important the US Senate is based on the smug comments ex-Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey made recently on a financial markets show (the name of which escapes me). The moderator was lamenting about the terrible effect a Harris presidency would have on corporate America and possibly the stock market (although the latter seems to be bulletproof regardless of whatever is happening with the economy and the lives of the average American.) Toomey cleared his throat, then said, and I paraphrase, "Well, you know I'm not going to support Trump because he tried to overthrow a fair election. But, the solution to a possible Harris presidency is us Republicans winning the Senate. That's essential because we can control the decisions on judge and high ranking nominees and hold off the Democrats effort to end the filibuster. So even if Trump loses, we just need to make sure we win the Senate." Enough said. That should motivate all Democrats and anyone who plans on voting for Harris to fight like hell for the Dems to hold the Senate and I say win the House. Because, even if Harris wins, if Dems lose the Senate, her policies have very little chance of coming to fruition. So, if Dems lose the Senate, don't blame Harris if she can't make good on her promises.

As an aside, incumbent three-term Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey is in an unexpectedly tight race with his Republican challenger, Dave McCormick, whose super PAC is pouring millions into his campaign. I think Casey's messaging has been too limited and muted. But, I hope Harris and even Obama will campaign with him soon. That may energize enthusiasm. And he needs money. So, if anyone can donate to Casey's campaign, or if you're local, door-knock in PA, please do!

As bad as it was what happened to the Georgia election workers- maybe the message should be to any one considering similar actions to look at the ultimate result of being sued and losing millions of dollars for such actions and lawyers losing their licenses.

A bad scenario is that Kamala Harris wins the presidency (and survives all the ridiculous lawsuits from the MAGA Right) and the Dems also form the majority in the House of Reps, but the GOP wins the Senate 52-48 - which is not only plausible but highly likely.

In the two months between 5 November and 6 January, President Biden has to confirm a hundred federal judges at least, and then set up a brand new Harris-approved Cabinet that a new GOP-controlled Senate can't touch.

The Dems have to be ruthless in exploiting the rules in the lame-duck period, but I fear they are far too nice, and far too law-abiding. They actually believe in the American Dream, while the GOP are just the scum you find in the bottom of your shower.

It is NOT highly likely that Republicans will take back the Senate! I don’t know what you are reading but whatever it is, consider putting it down and instead, get to work to help get out the vote. Save your handwringing until after the election. Far better to work to win it while that’s still possible! Sheesh!

I support Senators Tester and Brown in their efforts to maintain their seats in the US Senate and wish them all the best.

In Indiana, we have an opportunity to place Dr. Valerie McCray into a seat in the Senate, replacing MAGA Mike Braun and denying the odious Jim Banks that seat, and she could use some of your support. She is also campaigning in a deeply red state that is turning purple. Please consider looking at her campaign and her platform and help her with donations and by bringing attention to her qualities as an excellent candidate.

Every seat in the Senate and the House is important. Do not write off Indiana! We are going to surprise a lot of people in November!

I gave myself permission months ago to stop listening to polls…..certain media….I read the daily letter, wish the media would stop giving any press to the insanity from magas. Being patient and knowing the election will only begin to correct the damage to our country and our mental well being. Calmness and doing the right things again for our country. Respect, decorum and integrity put back in place by adults. Times are changing and we need to support the democratic policies to assist our great nation in healing. Once women’s rights are put back in place I will again fly the American flag on my home! I am truly looking forward to that action again!
