Cherry on top of the debate: Right afterwards, Taylor Swift posted on Instagram her endorsement of Harris-Walz, with the Time magazine cover photo of her and her cat, reminder to vote, and sign off as Childless Cat Lady. 5.6 million likes so far. ❤️

Cherry on top indeed, Ellie Kona! AND thank you Robert Hubbell for the reminder: “focus on Kamala Harris’s ability to show Americans that she is up to the job of being president. That’s the story; let’s not bury the lead.” “Walking him like a poodle” will definitely keep me giggling all day long!

That's a heck of a big cherry! Swift has 283 million followers, and apparently they all do what she says (I really don't understand social media!!). And the timing is exquisite--right after the blockbuster debate where HCR said of Harris, "She is walking him like a poodle!" Maybe Harris can take the poodle for another walk--the second debate. This time on a friendly network (although the moderators weren't too bad).

Nicely done, Jon, with Bob in Upstate NY, I say, consider that line stolen. I'll use it. (Oh, how nice it is to laugh at Trump. I've worried about the media's turning him into a punch line, because he is a serious threat to all we hold dear about our country, but last night Kamala Harris looked on Trump as the pitiful human being he is and he saw it, the Republicans who watched saw that amused disdain, and every "undecided" voter saw it too. Laughter, scorn, pity, reasoned discourse, and evidence, whatever it takes! We are not going back.)

Elsewhere in this string I noted how a professor of mine saw the deciding moment of the 1960 campaign in the first debate, when the camera showed JFK looking astonished as Nixon prattled on for the Sunday-school vote, and I suggested that the equivalent this year may have been the split screen that showed Kamala looking amazed, amused and askance as Trump maundered on with his lies.

Expand full comment

I know, Jon! I was worried that because Harris is shorter than Trump, she would "look" smaller. But I was delighted to see ABC use the split screen presentation 90% of the time, effectively fixing that problem without having to resort to footstools which Trump could have used to belittle, as he constantly belittles wounded people, handicapped people, soldiers, people with stutters. Good job, ABC! And Harris' expressions were masterful and eloquent. I sincerely hope you are right and it will be JFK-like in its subliminal effect on people.

Watching the debate this morning, I find it notable in that Trump announced his own weakness at the start where as VP Harris had to cross over to his podium to shake his hand. And he calls himself a "businessman"? Give me a freaking break.

It was great watching the comments here and on Threads last night. A significant post was made by Kimberly Atkins Stohr early in the debate:

" He said ' Nobody on the other side was killed' on Jan 6th. The 'The other side'. He is spewing admissions. Paging Jack Smith"

An hour later, Kimberly reposted that post with this warning:

"Dear colleagues: Don't lose the plot. He called the seat of our national government 'the other side'"

Now this from me: Make no mistake, his "other side" is also the Capitol police.

What a night! Kamala crushed it, from the moment she stepped onstage and strode confidently over to tffg to shake his hand, through delivering her closing statement. She handed him plenty of bait to allow him to lie, rant and destroy himself with new heights of incoherence on public television. The "mute" button applied regularly with closed captions running was a wonderful tool whenever tffg opened his mouth, as his voice is intolerable.

Plenty of memes with sound bites popped up like mushrooms during and after the debate. I'm sure Kamala's campaign staff are already creating new ads using the material generated to inform those who were not watching the debate.

Taylor Swift's endorsement was the icing on the cake. Sweet dreams indeed.

Expand full comment

I was struck by how she chased him to shake his hand and how it immediately disarmed him and made him look like the small, petty weakling that he is. And how she dressed him down from there.

I was very pleased with the moderators for the most part, and felt they fairly asked pointed questions of both participants, and fact-checked the most egregious lies. Of course, since the Republican nominee was the source of them, the fact-checking was one-sided. I was disappointed in their calling him "Mr. President," but I think that's standard etiquette, referring to former officials by their last title. I felt the moderators did a much better job than most in controlling the debate and keeping it on the rails.

Afterwards, she went to a room where she further explained some of her answers, while he went to the "spin room" to spin more lies and declare victory. I hope she'll take the time to expand on the answers more, since off the cuff answers to broad moderators' questions are not often thoughtful or informative, and easily criticized for the lack of detail they reveal.

p.s. Among other things, I was disgusted by the Republican nominee's repeated putdowns of President Biden ("sitting on the beach," "wake him up," "where is he hiding," etc.). The President is actually doing his job, which the Republican nominee failed to do for most of his term in office, especially his last six months.

“We have a President who doesn't know he’s dead.” was the one that got me. I hope ol’ Joe threw his shoe at the TV for that one.

i know. The moderators gave Trump an extra nine minutes to speak by failing to enforce their own rule of turning off mikes when it wasn't his turn to speak. i suppose we can use it to Harris' advantage, by pointing out that she wasn't treated as fairly as Trump was and didn't complain but still did wonderfully, etc.

JustRaven, love your point about the mute button! I find his voice intolerable too. In fact, I was grateful for the comments on this blog and elsewhere about how angry he looked, how he looked down constantly, how he wouldn't even look at her--because I cannot bring myself to look at HIS face, ever.

Harris was just spectacular. As someone who tries not to over-emphasize gender perspectives, last night I felt with certainty that the US needs a woman as president. Not that a woman can do just as good a job or that a glass ceiling will be broken. The country needs a woman NOW. Particularly with individual rights, Harris mailed it last night, in a way only a woman can in this moment, and the country desperately needs that to “straighten up and fly right,” as my dad used to say. (Orig. from a Nat King Cole song)

After enlightenment, chop wood & carry water.

Lets celebrate all the successes and good news, but don't stop working to make sure what happened 23 years ago today never happens again. Kamala threw a bucket of water on the wicked witch last night, and he is melting — keep the water coming until Nov.6, when we can breathe a sigh of relief....and then keep chopping & carrying.

What a fantastic debate! And it is so exhausting trying to figure out Trump's train-crash line of thought. But now and for the immediate future what is important is not to become complacent. So when the VP says she's the underdog, we really must remember this so that democrats come out and vote! Do not repeat 2016!

Trump is not hard to figure out when you remember that his is a certified psychopath. Not a mere sociopath, a psychopath. They lack brain receptors that allow them to think of anything other than themselves. They are unable to consider risks because they think themselves untouchable. They cannot, literally, focus on anything that bores them. Being a psychopath explains all Trump's behaviors. I recently researched it a bit. I recommend this article:

Kamala hit it out of the park. She not only appeared presidential and knowledgeable, but she was able to stay calm, choosing her challenges to Trump wisely, recognizing he would only double down if she pushed back on specific lies, realizing that will only give him more oxygen.

Her most powerful performance involved shaming and ridiculing him to his face. Hell hath no fury like a narcissist scorned. Suggesting that world leaders laugh at him, he writes love letters to Putin and Kim Jung Un, he is weak, he is a criminal, his rallies are duds, etc. sears his very fragile ego. We should expect an apoplectic reactivity from Trump for the rest of the campaign.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you Robert and especially for all the links and the notes about the NYTimes.

Though I agree wholeheartedly that Harris was masterful and was the most composed and skillful debater I’ve ever watched; especially the way she handled Trump, I can’t help but focus on the Lame ability of our media and moderators to point up lying and blatantly bad behaviors from Trump. I guess we call it sane-washing but it’s more than that. No kid in a classroom would be left to behave like that. The only suitable analogy I come up with is the numbness you get when an angry dog is crated and keeps barking, growling, foaming and banging the cage and you just walk past it as if it’s normal. He is not normal and please God!! Someone in our media has to start dealing with it when they interview him.

And after all this I want a law that forbids us to refer to former elected officials with their former title. “President Trump” . He is Donald Trump now and that is it. It’s confusing to people who are less informed and allows someone such as Trump to be elevated in a way that is dangerous and inaccurate to his plain old status of citizen. It also makes moderators and media more apt to act like he’s mighty and deserves special treatment. No. He served, he’s done as are all former electeds. Humble pie.

Kamala won, fair and square. Im utterly committed to getting her elected. And hoping the media at large wasn’t more dazzled by the Trump sideshow, rabid dog.

Judges (some judges) do that. And I've heard many references to "Defendant Trump" when he was actually on trial.

In this case, addressing him as "Mr. President" seemed to mollify him and get him to calm down and shut up and let the moderators move things along.

A confirmed Harris/Walz voter, I watched the debate with trepidation. Could she fight the lies and misogyny that were sure to ooze forth from tfg?? Well,....now I am relieved. She did a good job. Maybe even a great job. And tfg? Well he melted down and pouted. He repeated unverified "news stories" and when he cited authoritative news story sources he cited Sean Hannity and two other Fox personalities. I view a liar citing a liar as not proof. I wonder if Mike Johnson, Ron Johnson, and Mitch McConnell see it even a little the way I do or if they too have their blinders up?
