Everyone, You must watch "Pelosi in the House" a documentary by her daughter Alexandra Pelosi. It is showing on HBO and it will make your day! Nancy is just brilliant and speaks it like she sees it! Love it! We, the People, all of us this time!

Lawrence O'Donnell interviewed Alexandra Pelosi last night and of course showed clips from her documentary. He sang high praises. Looks like lots of no make up, behind the scenes, and Nancy's instruction is, "Just watch me work!"

I saw the interview and the great clips but don't subscribe to HBO. I hope the documentary will become available through other online sources. Love that reply to Alexandra: "Just watch me work".

We are all focused on the wrong things. Trump and Musk are distractions to all of us. We should be focused on someone like Tim Ryan in his farewell speech who captured exactly what is wrong with this country. I share what he said.

. “ This country has fed more people, clothed more people, cured more people, and liberated more people than all the other countries in the world combined. I think that we get out of this mess that we're in, the polarization, the hate, the anger, the fear — the first step out of that is with gratitude. If we all start from a place of gratitude, we will have a much different opinion of the country, of each other, and of what's possible for us, because this country has always done great things, but we do great things when we're together. When we embrace normalcy, when we embrace decency, when we embrace compassion.

When you walk through these doors, you are a leader and you are charged with making the tough decisions, the hard decisions, not the easy decisions, not the ones that are going to make your next election a little easier. The challenge today is to be called to lead and lead vigorously, lead boldly, because that's what the world needs us to do right now. This country has always been innovative, and we need to enter an era of reform, of reconciliation, and of innovation. Across the board.

The systems are all broken — the economic system is broken, the immigration system is broken, the welfare system is broken, the education system is broken. We're not going to fix these problems if we're not decent to each other. If we don't talk to each other. Some of the solutions will be conservative, some will be liberal and progressive. But it's through that conflict, those arguments and debates that this very chamber was set up to do, that we come to the best possible solution. And that, ultimately, is what we're talking about.

We the People have got to come together as we approach the 250th anniversary of this country. Let us renew our commitment to each other so that we can meet President Lincoln's charge that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. And that government, Of the People, By the People, and For the People, shall not perish from this earth. I yield back.

I respectfully disagree, Stephen. Ryan’s sentiments are lovely when people have opposing visions of how to fix ailing and broken institutions, and crucially, are willing to negotiate in good faith on the remedies. The people who are seriously threatening our democracy, the trumps and musks, are not people you can sit down with at the table; they are not interested in solving the problems Ryan identified. Their MO is destroy everything and everyone standing in the way of THEIR vision of society. That their vision is not monolithic in a heterogeneous society is the ultimate joke on them. They end up eating each other alive and everyone else, woke or asleep, suffers cruelly at their hands if they prevail in destroying what is left of our democracy. The first blow was Citizens United!

Expand full comment

I understand how you feel and I think what Tim Ryan was trying to convey is that all the members of Congress from both parties have to work together to not only solve the countries problems but to also get away from the polarization created by Trump and the other MAGA followers who are in a minority.

But, if enough of us sit down at the adult table, we'll take up all the space and force the fringes into the kid's room where they belong under close supervision. The political world has become a public forum for the discharge of bile and other substances that weren't part of public discourse in the past and that has driven a lot of decent people out of the game. The media, which has driven much of that in the interest of increased revenue can and must be part of the solution as well if we're ever to achieve the goals that Ryan spoke of.

Expand full comment

That is very well said. There are a lot of decent, intelligent people out there and we deserve a louder voice, by which I do not mean yelling and screaming for attention. Let's find a way together to make ourselves heard going forward.

Expand full comment

That is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. I am so sorry Ryan lost the election. We need more voices lie his.

Expand full comment

The problem with Paul Ryan is that his words were not inclusive. He left the prejudicial/biased part remain silent unlike the Trump/Musk folk, but it was there!

Expand full comment

This wasn't Paul Ryan. It was Tim Ryan. Different person. So not clear on what you are saying. Possibly something I agree with, in part, but hard to tell given the difference between the men you (no doubt inadvertently) confounded.

Expand full comment

oops! Big goof. But my point still stands. Yes, we need the attitudes Tim Ryan is talking about, but we need inclusion and equity along with them.

Actually, I’d really like tangible, fungible trading cards of all the J6 plotters, election deniers, White Supremacists, right-wing Supreme Court activist judges, and other various and sundry haters, racists, anti-semites, et al. The ones that get indicted and convicted are the most high value cards.

I see people trading them, and as a great teaching tool in schools. We need to keep these villains and their evil doings alive. There is so much vile stuff that went on in the U.S. in the years leading up to W.W.II that has never been taught in schools - see Rachel Maddow’s Ultra Podcast.

Paula, you are absolutely correct about that. I haven't seen Rachel M's podcast, but I'm learning about all the vileness prior to WWII by reading Eleanor Roosevelt's biography. There is altogether too much US history that we never learned in school and should have.

Paxton's demand is awful! I wonder if allies in Texas might flood the bureau with requests to change their gender and overwhelm the department? I'm remembering how the King of Denmark rode out of his castle wearing a yellow star of David when the Nazi's ordered all Jews to wear stars. All the Danes followed suit.

On pronouns, I had fun thinking about how to solve the problem of being inclusive (or ambiguous if you'd like). My solution is coining shhe and heirs. Pronounced sh-hee and hares. This way you do not have to use the plural they/them. I've never put these next to my name or any pronoun preference for that matter. I'm an egalitarian and will try to respect each person's wishes much like Miss or Ms. Personally I'm more concerned about being called white which has more and more stigma attached to it with white supremacy on the rise. I would prefer to be called Euro-American or European American which seems more consistent with African American, Asian American, Native American. I'm trying to encourage this by checking other when they ask for race and fill in Euro American if there is a place for it. That makes for consistent description as all geographic ancestry based. I like to use consistent language like men and women, guys and gals, gentlemen and ladies, rather than men and girls or boys and ladies. We, the People, all of us this time.

I’m getting older- I don’t even want to learn how to use the TV clicker, or how to program the telephone. Mummy was a grammarian but somehow I wasn’t paying attention to grammar in school- the pronoun thing is intimidating, ugh, one more thing to wade through and try to do correctly! I will keep an open mind and will certainly continue to respect each person for who they are! We, the People!

You press it and tell the tv what you want it to do. Sometimes we get so frustrated we tell the tv to do things that are anatomically impossible for a human, let alone a tv. We share your frustration.

Regarding your final word on the Texas AG’s request: in this instance, the is obsession is over gender (or you could say Sex) not sexuality. At this point sexual orientation is not something we are required to declare in our drivers license. “ For a party that claims to stand for individual liberty, the GOP’s obsessiveness over people’s sexuality is creepy.”

On a more serious note, Elon Musk tweets that it is okay to criticize him “all day long but endangering my family is not.” Yet, he, now as sole owner, king and ruler of the Twitter meta-sphere, reinstates accounts of those who expound Hate and regularly issues tweets that endanger people he psychotically considers to be Enemies of His State (of mind) such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, Yoel Roth, Paul Pelosi and even Ukraine . The demise of Twitter can not come soon enough . . . .

Finally, "Texas AG makes chilling request for drivers license information on trans people." While this action is chilling and creepy and frightening. No person who takes such action should be in position of power. Period. Full Stop. AG Paxton should be removed from office and disbarred for grossly immoral conduct.

If suit hasn't yet been filed, I expect it will be. Surely this can't be legal!

Just came across this article. According to the content, the requested information has not actually been provided per AG Paxton's request.

https://jezebel.com/texas-creates-chilling-registry-of-16-000-people-who-ch-1849898809 "Texas DPS officials ultimately put together a list of 16,466 requests for gender changes on licenses between June 2020 and June of this year. But they struggled to determine the reasons for these requests—some Texans requested to change the gender on their license because they were trans, but others requested the change by mistake, or due to an error on their original license. “Ultimately, our team advised the AG’s office the data requested neither exists nor could be accurately produced. Thus, no data of any kind was provided,” the DPS spokesperson told the Post.

It’s a relief that this data ultimately wasn’t shared with Paxton’s office, as Paxton and other top Republicans in the state ramp up their efforts to surveil and terrorize trans Texans. Last year, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed legislation to prohibit trans youth from participating in sports at school. This year, the governor directed the state to investigate families with trans kids and health providers who offer gender-affirming care to young people for child abuse. Several families were investigated as a result, including the family of a trans teen who attempted to take their life while an investigation was underway."

Wow, what an action-packed piece today! The Trump grift is hilarious. And if you think French is tough, try German, which has 3 genders -- masculine, feminine and neuter.

To quote Mark Twain: "I say to myself, "REGEN (rain) is masculine--or maybe it is feminine--or possibly neuter--it is too much trouble to look now. Therefore, it is either DER (the) Regen, or DIE (the) Regen, or DAS (the) Regen, according to which gender it may turn out to be when I look. In the interest of science, I will cipher it out on the hypothesis that it is masculine. Very well--then THE rain is DER Regen, if it is simply in the quiescent state of being MENTIONED, without enlargement or discussion--Nominative case; but if this rain is lying around, in a kind of a general way on the ground, it is then definitely located, it is DOING SOMETHING--that is, RESTING (which is one of the German grammar's ideas of doing something), and this throws the rain into the Dative case, and makes it DEM Regen. However, this rain is not resting, but is doing something ACTIVELY,--it is falling--to interfere with the bird, likely--and this indicates MOVEMENT, which has the effect of sliding it into the Accusative case and changing DEM Regen into DEN Regen." Having completed the grammatical horoscope of this matter, I answer up confidently and state in German that the bird is staying in the blacksmith shop "wegen (on account of) DEN Regen." Then the teacher lets me softly down with the remark that whenever the word "wegen" drops into a sentence, it ALWAYS throws that subject into the GENITIVE case, regardless of consequences--and therefore this bird stayed in the blacksmith shop "wegen DES Regens." Read the whole hilarity here: https://faculty.georgetown.edu/jod/texts/twain.german.html
