At your suggestion I began a clip of Harris responding to a question-- a good, tough question. She was direct, strong, clear and understanding. She nailed it. I watched the entire interview after seeing that clip. This election should not be close, if indeed it in fact is--she should be running away with this vote. Vote early, tell you friends, tell your family--unleash Kamala; she's the real deal.
My vote has been in since last week. I voted from Germany, as did my daughter. We are team Harris-Walz all the way and proud members of Democrats Abroad. I am also an active member. Recruiting and informing people here in Germany that have US citizenship that they have the right to vote, and we help them to sign up to do that, and discuss different ways to get and send the ballot depending on the state you vote in.
I am looking forward to reading about the impact of mobilizing American citizens living abroad -- either long-term as ex-pats or college students doing a semester or year abroad. (I was part of the Vote Forward letter writing campaign this year to American's abroad).
Many years ago, I missed my first opportunity to vote in a presidential election because I was studying overseas. It never even occurred to me that I might be able to do so.
It has been hard to get the word out here because German privacy laws prevent us from getting a list of Americans to target who live abroad. Luckily some German papers and radio stations and television have been doing interviews of us that helps to get the word out. I go to an English language quiz bowl once a week and they let me make an announcement during half time. The rest of the time we set up tables at events to try to recruit people. My daughter only knows because of me, but that is a start. I have pushed her to tell everyone she is in class with who has US citizenship that they can vote and we can help them. We are doing another cafe meet this weekend where we help people to vote. We did one last week. We go to different parts of the city to do this There is also going to be an event at an English language movie theater. What we read was that in 2020 Democrats Abroad put Biden over the edge in Georgia and Arizona. Let us hope this happens again in swing states. There was a poll of Democrats Abroad and the demographic results were that mostly post graduate educated, mostly liberal, more women and the median age was 67, that is of the survey respondents.
Absolutely! I watched a significant portion of that interview on MSNBC. She was amazing: she reminded everyone that she wants to be President for EVERYONE, but in recognizing the special needs of black people and others who cannot afford equipment to start a business, she plans to give them $20,000 to do that. She said many other things in response to the people who asked her questions to show that she is sensitive to the difficulties of the black community. She may have changed more than a few votes yesterday!
So the felon was totally off the rails again and the NYT chose to sugarcoat it as an "improvisational detour." Well, I finally had enough a few day earlier after they published this sleazy hit piece
I wrote them "Your decision to publish Jack Goldsmith's guest-essay was the last push I needed to cancel my subscription. If anybody owes the American people an apology it is the NYT and certainly not Jack Smith."
Coming back to the improvisational detour: Are there no grounds for copyright owners or artists to sue the campaign and prevent their music being prominently played at fascist rallies?
Thanks,Stefan, for sharing the article as I dumped NYT some months ago.(Painless after being a subscriber for years). So Jack Smith violated an “unwritten” rule with “uncertain scope”??And of course Goldsmith(an American Enterprise Institute fellow/gaslighter refers to VP Harris and President Biden as Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden.
I laughed out loud when I saw the outtakes of the campaign event, especially when Kristi Noem couldn't keep up with "YMCA." She was obviously uncomfortable and did not seem to know how to form the letters along with the song. How embarrassing to not be able to form a Y, M, C, and A?!!
How embarrassing for her - - and it should be. Where else but in the fever swamp of MAGA could someone who executed their unruly dog still maintain a place of prominence?
An appalling article by Goldsmith. The proximity to the election was caused by Trump's full use-- and some might say abuse-- of the protections that led to months of delay, in addition to the SCOMGA adding 6 months of additional delay to issue their bloated fever-dream ruling on Immunity. In that ruling, they acted more as defense counsel and back-filled as many gaps as they could to help Trump out in evading a trial for accountability; even Judge Amy had to hold-out on some of the more egregious aspects of a thoroughly egregious ruling. Trump and SCOMAGA got what they asked for: a challenging, fact-filled, and TIMELY brief in response that sought to state the case vs Trump within the guidelines & specifics of the Immunity ruling AS WAS REQUIRED for Chutkan, the Federal District Court, and SCOMAGA to make an effective interpretation of the case based on the new guidelines. Goldsmith sees that as political interference, I am guessing because the facts and evidence are damning to Trump. It must be so embarrassing for them. The 60-day "rule" is not a law, it is not in the Constitution, but just a principle or tradition -- and it has some gravitas to it worth considering as far as perception of Justice. Should we accord more protection and kid gloves to an individual who is trying to undermine the system that he wants such politeness from? Was Jan6 a polite objection to the system, or just a spoiled brat whining and setting the cafeteria on fire because they didn't serve chocolate cake on a Wednesday? I don't feel we owe Trump any consideration or restraint. He could have had his trial and maybe acquittal by now, but the American people were entitled to at least know the full case. And the details were not easy for Goldsmith or MAGA to swallow, eh? Too bad. Glad you cancelled the rag!
I wonder-- did Goldsmith write a haughty opinion when Comey dumped on Hillary Clinton only about 10 days before the election in 2016? Was that even mentioned here?
Thanks for the info. Very instructive, great piece.
Wouldn't it be nice if at least some of the artists, whose songs are being abused by the felon, would get together for a concert (say a week before the elections) with the proceeds going to Harris-Walz and the other Democratic candidates. The coverage would be tremendous. Madison Square Garden comes to mind – a day after the felon's event there.
Great idea! Clear the air in MSG... I saw Rufus Wainwright interviewed about the use of Hallelujah, and he was somewhat equivocal, I thought. He gave the impression it was distasteful to him but that it is not his song, it's Leonard Cohen's song; he didn't seem to want to be too confrontational about it which is maybe just his gentle vibe. It's also his signature piece so maybe he doesn't want to step too deeply into more controversy about it and get death threats & hire security.
Stefan - - I was reminded today that the 60-day rule is to be applied to any NEW litigation or indictment of a candidate. This is not new litigation at all, it has been ongoing for approximately 18 months. I am not an expert but if that part is true then there is no real valid objection to the continuity of the process. Remember also that this is someone who is a convicted Felon in another related matter. 45 became 34...
Thank you for providing the link to view the town hall meeting. Kamala had a real town meeting where people called in and she answered all their questions. At don-old’s town meeting he listened to music for 39 minutes instead of doing the Q&A session. More artists came after him with cease and desist orders, as he didn’t get permission to use their music. Yet another glaring difference between Kamala and him. I see Kamala getting stronger and don-old getting weaker and more disoriented. So happy that Georgia is not doing hand counting. We need to call out don-old on all his lies. It could be like a Whack-A-Mole game. One thing for sure is you would have to fast and agile.
It sounds like his Chicago town hall was even worse than the Detroit one where people were fainting, and he apparently said, something like, "is anyone else going to faint?" That is when he decided to listen to his playlist for 39 minutes. A group of us are going to see The Apprentice in Hamburg, Germany this weekend, and it will have advertisements for vote from abroad and we will have a table to help people get registered to vote. I watched a Democracy Now! interview with the filmmaker which is very interesting. Here is a link to the interview. It is around 20 minutes. https://youtu.be/rZuZs-MehQo?si=nlsG29N8X2Vkpti5
Hi Linda, I also got tickets (with friends, my wife won't come, she says there's not enough prozac for her to survive the film) for Sunday at the Savoy. Looking forward to finally meeting you.
Colin did a good job of pinning Cruz’s ears last night. Another Ivy League smoothie with flaming tail feathers. It would be an unexpected blessing to fire Cancun Cruz.
Although I agree with Robert's " Since the 2015 high water mark, small groups of religious fundamentalists have engineered a “regulatory capture” of the Supreme Court. The Court has been reduced to the political action arm of the Christian nationalism", I believe the beginning of the end of much our our country's freedoms can be traced to 2010's Citizens' United misbegotten decision that was driven by the highly partisan Christian soldier, Justice John Roberts.
Please do whatever you can over the next 20 days: donate, canvas, phone bank, postcards, drive people to the polls. Maybe you might not get around to dusting or elaborate meal prep. There’s always take out & delivery. Then entertain yourself on Tuesday October 22 when President Obama and Governor Walz team up, for a rally in Madison WI for the first day of Early Voting in WI. We are looking forward to two strong, healthy, highly energetic, very articulate, intelligent, real men take down an obese deranged felon and his creepy weird dystopian lying running mate. Typically the rallies are in late afternoon or early evening in my time zone. Don’t believe all those rigged polls. Don’t agonize. DO SOMETHING!
No question Harris is hitting on all cylinders and is everywhere. The energy is contagious. Trump looked tired during his interview in Chicago and his energy level is low and voters are seeing his age front and center. One noticeable sign that Trump is losing is his choir of supporters like Greene, Gaetz and Graham have been relatively quiet compared to usual and I have not heard Cruz or Hawley jumping up and down supporting Trump. Harris needs to make the case that Vance is actually running for President. I have seen a lot of presidential campaigns but the Harris campaign is the best by far. We need to close the deal
Robert --- I'm in awe of the research and analysis you do each day. It should be a model to many of the college kids who whine about their work load. I don't know how you do it - really! Do you ever sleep?
I "certify" that this letter from Robert Hubbell was one of his clearest reassurances that "the center will hold". And I had a vision. VP Kamala Harris received the tally of votes and announced her victory. The vision is the look on her face. The soundtrack is joyous deafening applause and howling excitement across the nation. The planet will roar with approval. And relief.
I listened to some of the Charlemagne the God interview, and I was impressed by the questions. What I've learned from the various interviews in untraditional venues is that msm does not have a monopoly on serious, hard-hitting interviewers.
But, Ashley--mainstream media does not have ANY serious, hard-hitting interviewers. Not in 2024. All the serious, hard-hitting interviewers are on alternate news sources. Like substack and these podcasts Harris has been going on.
That's another reason I don't believe the polls. Pollsters have no baseline, no benchmark, to take results garnered from these alternate sources into account.
I have heard that the Harris campaign has hired something like 300 lawyers at the ready to combat election interference. That says to me that they are not just sitting around waiting to see what happens. We just went through Hurricane Milton. With all the warnings being what they were, we prepared and we got through it pretty well. That’s what you do when there are warnings from folks in the know. That is what the Harris campaign is doing.
Perfect summation from Robert, restacking with this:
"So, tonight’s takeaway is that Congress does not “certify” the electoral votes. The electoral votes are cast on December 17 by the winning slates of electors in each state. They are counted on January 6 in a joint session of Congress. The candidate with the majority of appointed electors is the President. Period. Full stop."
Well placed comments on social media...."Not suckers or losers" to vets groups, military, military dependents, history sites. Vote vets has thousands of testimonials of 2020 Trump voters that flipped. According to Facebook, there are 4 million veterans or active duty members on Facebook, and 12.5 million family members of veterans or active duty members on Facebook.
Daniel, you have been pointing out that "Trump hates dogs" is persuasive for a long time now. What we have since learned is that the GOP embraces people who brag about killing dogs. And did anyone else see that the new NRA CEO (close enough to a Republican operative) was involved in torturing a cat to death when he was a college student? Agree 100%. And better yet, the questions weren't "gotcha" questions based on the opposing party's talking points.
From what I've seen, MSM only does "serious, hard-hitting interviews" with candidates with a (D) after their name.
