Michigan's cosmetology license requires the following commitment: "I have the ability and will serve the public in a fair, honest, and open manner." As a response to a transgender customer the following is not serving the public in a "fair, honest, and open manner." : “If a human identifies as anything other than a man/woman please seek services at a local pet groomer. You are not welcome at this salon.” To be a hairstylist, a person must have a cosmetology license in Michigan. The next step should be a complaint to Michigan's Bureau of Professional Licensing to take that cosmetology license away.

All people who vote for Trump, regardless of how much money they have, are losers. They are people who care about their wee-wee egos and feeling superior over the planet continuing to exist for their children, grandchildren, etc...and even other people's children, grandchildren, etc... That is the biggest loser you can be when you care more about your ego than your offspring, and the future of the planet. It is small minded. No one who is voting for Trump gets a pass on this description. Each and every one of them are LOSERS!

Linda, If this makes you feel better, so be it. Calling someone a loser is a weighty judgement. Amazingly, people's identify is shaped by many things and it is difficult for us to understand why they are supporting Trump, except to say we must do our best to gather in those who are open taking a look at information that help them get away from the fear that drives their actions. You might want to consider reading Margaret Wheatley's Who Do We Choose To Be?: Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, and Restoring Sanity. https://margaretwheatley.com/books-products/books/who-do-we-choose-to-be/

We have to find ways to connect with people who are open to information that will move and us beyond the fears that shape our being. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My growing understanding of why people are voting for Trump is making me ever more frightened and sick that I live in a world with so many people who are filled with such hatred for the people in my family, and this country who are not like them, or so they think. So, NO, It does not make me feel better! Reading Professor Kathleen Belew's book Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America has been very eye-opening. I have been looking at what is going on here and in Europe since the two groups colluded in the early 90s to bring about what is happening now. The lengthy American history of White Supremacy that we just can't seem to shake, and the reversion to Dixieland Politics that Donald Trump gave people permission to openly embrace, means his supporters feel no shame for being hateful bigots. They might deserve someone's sympathy, but they get absolutely no sympathy from me. Who gets my sympathy is their children. They are being oppressed and they are the future. The Dixiecrats running the Republican Party and the people who vote for them may think they are good people because they lie to themselves. I believe in naming the situation. We are looking at the antebellum Southern way of life taking over our whole country and dragging everyone into the toilet with them. Once the USA has been destroyed, all the money in the world will not make that good. Some billionaires have the illusion that they can just escape to another planet and live there. Well, our species was not meant to live in outer space, and just because you can buy a rocket ship to get you up there, does not mean your body won't age tremendously from the stress. Money does not clean the planet unless there is the will to do that. So, voting for Trump is destroying the planet for my loved ones and that does not get my sympathy, even if I understand why people are doing it. We should be preserving our planet for the next generations.

Linda, I feel your fright and regretfully embrace it all too often myself. Coincidentally, Kathleen Belew is the daughter of an acquaintance and I have heard her speak a number of times about her research. Unsettling for sure. There are several other works that I have read that have made it clear that the Dixieland South is trying to arise again. First, I read Jon Meacham's; The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels at the outset of DJT's reign of terror. He clearly lays out how the roots of the racism that Trump has openly embraced and encouraged to all the way back to Appomattox and The Lost Cause. In fact, Meacham points out that Trump was mentored by Roy Cohn, who guided Joe McCarthy. Everything we have seen from Trump he learned at the feet of his father. Fred and Roy Cohn. https://www.jonmeacham.com/book/the-soul-of-america/

Another most disconcerting read for me was George Orwell's: 1984. OMG! The words just jumped off the page and explained the source of the lies and gaslighting we have seen. Regretfully, the main character, Winston succumbed to Big Brother at the end of the book. It was incredible to see that Orwell create a scenario in 1946 that speaks directly to what we have seen since the arrival of Trump and his cohort - lies, misinformation, disinformation, and flat out fraud.

So, I recognize and understand what you are saying and can only hope that we can redirect our messages and energy to those so-called "moderate Republicans, independents or new voters. These are crises times for our democracy and constitutional law.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I hear you, loud and clear.

We should all write our Senators *and* Senator Schumer, demanding that the Senate repeal its rules that permit “holds”, on Presidential nominations, by individual Senators. The current practice is absurd and harmful.

Pulling together two stories...

Michigan-type horror stories may motivate young voters more than any issue we have seen yet. This is a world they have not seen.

Ds should be running ads...a group of high school students going to an improv show and a black in the group being turned away. An interracial couple going to a restaurant and one being denied service.

Our SC justices are cowards. I cannot believe we are here.

Yes, I totally agree. How quickly we are moving backwards-what's next? Women losing their suffrage? Separate but equal schools legally open? The rogue SCOTUS has hypothetically reopened that Woolworth's lunch counter of long ago. This time it is not only black people who are being denied service, it is anyone that the owner/proprietor who thinks that not serving , no matter if that person is Asian, LGTBQ, Muslim etc is ok, as long as they say that it goes against their"religous" beliefs(wink wink). Why that list could include tattooed and pierced people, people with weight issues, people with blue hair etc. You get my drift. I fear that the wrath of this out-of-control SCOTUS is just beginning it's reign of terror and who knows where it all will end and whose rights will be gutted next.

Robert, fantastic and sobering newsletter. You are a great writer and a calming voice for me in the blizzard of news and how to think about it all. I am particularly concerned about your analysis of the abortion ban in Iowa. The voter numbers seem daunting, on the “wrong” side, and why Iowan women would allow this to stand is, frankly, beyond me. Please keep us tuned to August 8, not far off, to campaign in whatever ways we can. May the women of Iowa cast the votes for women’s rights. Thank you for all you do.

I wish someone would point out that the justice department has, indeed, singled out Trump for unfair treatment. Both he and his valet Walt Nauta have been given a pass that no one who reads this newsletter would be given. We would be doing jail time awaiting trial for the criminal charges they face and all before them have served so charged. Wouldn't it be nice if some federal authority could do what a college can do: expunge from the record his time served as president. America will never live this down.

I not only want the salon owner in Michigan to lose her customers, but I want her to lose her license to serve ANYONE, and I want someone to sue her, hoping it goes all the way to the Extreme Court. I thought their recent fake decision include the notion of “religious freedom” in order to discriminate against LGBTQ or anyone. This salon owner has nothing but personal animus at play. There is no religious factor driving her stupidity, and I do not consider a business owner to be an artist with creative expression, the other stipulation of the Exreme Court’s fake decision. If they took this case or one like it, how could they now throw this person’s absurd refusal to serve under that umbrella? Are they textualists, or are they just opportunists? Sadly, we know the answer to that as well. Can’t wait for Gretchen Whitmer to get hold of this poor excuse of “human” in her state.

"Before entering politics, Tuberville was the head football coach at Auburn University from 1999 to 2008. He was also the head football coach at the University of Mississippi from 1995 to 1998, Texas Tech University from 2010 to 2012, and the University of Cincinnati from 2013 to 2016."

So, my question is, where are all the players, particularly players of color, in speaking out about Tuberville's blatant racism? I can't imagine he openly exhibited the obvious racism he, as a U.S. Senator, makes no effort to hide. At the schools he coached, Tuberville had to have walked into the homes of countless young black and brown men to convince them and their families that being coached by him would be a positive experience for them. It is stunning to me that none of these players are stepping forward now to address Tuberville's outrageous actions and behavior as a

Senator.

They rarely do - it's one of the dirty 'secrets' of college football, which I used to love, but there is a tacit understanding that you keep quiet about this and act like college athletics is separate from all that - exceptions being a few the highly-paid coaches in the top 25 schools who use their popularity as a platform for the evils of power and money that characterize the GOP. Lou Holtz campaigning for Trump and Amy Coney Barrett is another example...it's too bad some of the enlightened coaches (and major sports stars) don't use their influence to re-balance the culture - yes, it's largely southern - and call out bigots and racists. Too much money at stake--a familiar problem.

I just got my package of postcards to OH so will get busy today and tomorrow. 🤗 And, hopefully, Judge Cannon will indeed judge and not fall for the batch of lies that Lawrence O'Donnell outlined on his show last night.

Speaking of complacency, my husband and I saw the Auschwitz exhibit at the Reagan Library yesterday. It's very well done (except for the dadblasted headset) and must-see for everyone who can. Some of the images, film clips, and quotes posted on the walls were eerily contemporary, i.e., Hitler rallies and his unhinged rhetoric. The collection of everyday belongings, including what prisoners buried under the barracks, is thoughtfully displayed. For me, the most powerful were the video interviews with survivors spaced throughout the exhibit, their comments heightening and personalizing the images and commentary in each section. The last video, right before the exit, movingly exhorted the viewer to be nice, don't judge a whole people but judge the individual, be aware, but especially be nice.
