It’s the birthday of my first-born. She did very well in high school, graduated college with the inaugural class of a unique program, has lived in LA, New York, spent six months at sea traveling halfway around the world, wrote a book, and now she’s canvassing in Arizona.
Tonight is my father’s yahrzeit. For those who don’t know, this is the anniversary of his death, according to the Hebrew calendar. He left Germany at the age of 15, settled with his family in California, fought against Germans in WWII, earned his masters from UC Berkeley, raised a family of four, and died far too soon.
I’m a proud father. I’m a proud son. I love them both beyond reason and understanding.
I vote for them.
I vote for country where there is freedom and possibility for my daughter.
I vote for a country where discrimination against immigrants, religious minorities, women, LGBTQIA2S+ and of any kind is not tolerated, so what happened to my father can never happen again.
I vote for democracy so that it will endure.
I vote for empathy so that it will bind us in kindness and compassion.
I vote for hope so that the arc of history bends towards justice.
This is incredibly moving. I am working in the voter protection "boiler room " answering questions and trouble shooting in Pittsburgh. We began the day swatting at false fliers misdirection students. We got that fixed. My focus has been polling place places on or near campuses. Turnout at those precincts has been high, sometimes record breaking.
Most of my career has been in higher education, and my fondest wish is that this election passes the torch to a younger generation dedicated to preserving and expanding our democratic heritage. No matter what happens, I have been impresses by the energy, dedication, creativity and grit displayed by our younger voters. And a huge thank you to this community of my fellow citizens, for all you have done and are doing to keep the promise of this country healthy and whole.
Nancy, thank you for working in the boiler room. I've been a poll challenger at early voting sites and today and am so impressed with the support given my the boiler room crew. Very tight operation where I am in MI.
Wow. Such a beautiful and moving comment. I used to believe all Americans were articulate and generous and kind. I'm sorry that my naivete has been upended. Robert and his followers restore my faith that there are more of us than there are of them. Thank you, Paul💖!
I hope so, but just don't understand why someone who raised $1B and has celebrity endorsements like crazy hasn't totally kicked butt all over this country.
This is my first time poll working here in Alabama! We had a record turnout in our precinct in Huntsville Alabama. We had long lines all day long. This is red Alabama and I think 10% of the counties overwhelmingly voted for Harris/Walz. in several counties were split 50-50. That’s amazing for Ruby red Alabama.💙🇺🇸💙
Thank you for that news Anj. In this part of CA I feel our voting is as it should be for everyone. Everyone gets a ballot in the mail weeks before the election (and a sometimes daunting amount of information in our voting guide) but we have time to read, research and vote intelligently and I hope most do. There are so many secure drop points for our ballots and the following day (if you have given the info needed to follow up) a text msg acknowledging receipt and that your vote has been counted.
Wisconsin and West Virginia people are very good people although it is unnerving how many vote differently than the group on this substack. To clarify I have strong feelings concerning Joe Mansion and know many West Virginians none of whom are bad.
Republicans lie and cheat, they cheer political violence, they view government service as a cash cow for grift rather than a solemn duty to their fellow Americans.
They don't support the core principles of free and fair elections and one person, one vote. Republican controlled state legislatures have spent the last decade or more passing legislation designed to make it more difficult to register to vote and to vote. Republicans have opposed every single measure designed to make voter registration and voting less cumbersome. They know the nation’s demographics are against them. The GOP is largely a party of older white males, definitely not the majority in this country. When voter turnout is large, Republicans usually lose.
That's why I enjoy wearing these kinds of shirts in front of them 👇
Heather must be my sister from another mother. 😉. 💯 agree with all of the above except this time high turn out could be the low propensity male voters not supporting our gal. If turn out is high I hope she is correct and I am wrong.
Your description of Republicans is spot on. Couldn't agree more.
Shame you had to ruin it by turning your comment into a commercial advertisement. Really makes it clear your comments are insincere and just a cover for your ad. Do you make more sales when you post things like your comment here, or with the "Democrats are ruining this country" ones you post on right-leaning sites?
The outpouring of support for the work in NC from people all over the country - here's looking at you, Robert & Jill & Jessica Craven etc. - is really impressive. I spent part of the day in Henderson, in Vance Co. (pop. 15,000) - the only county in the state with swing seats for Congress, state senate & state house. In the few minutes in the Party office, I met people from MA, VA, NY (my wife and me), CA and DC. It takes a big national village!
Thanks for all you have done, Jeff. The resources you marshalled on behalf of NC have made an enormous difference in Mecklenburg County. We appreciate it!
Just a really “feel good” post on one of the Twitter sites I’ve been toggling between… a graduate student who was in Berlin, whose mail-in ballot to PA either hadn’t been received or had been rejected, paid $1100 to fly round trip so that she could vote in person. She said it was that important to her.
Oh yes they are. They even have signs out: "I'm voting for the 34-times convicted felon." You have to wonder where this country went so far off the rails that they believe this is a good idea.
As I approach my 8th decade of life I have come to appreciate my collective experiences as the sources of my "gut" feelings". My tour in Vietnam in the Marine infantry, my career in the NYPD as "Mr Inside AND Mr Outside" gave me a sense of both right and wrong. But it was my years on the NYS Governor's Commission on Domestic Violence and my decades of interacting with women (independent artists and instructors and members of quilting guilds and the general public) that made me keenly aware of their own sense of right and wrong, justice and injustice. It is these latter phases of my life that has now given me the "gut feeling" that it will be women that will save our democratic- republic now and in the future. Peter Mancuso
I love your perspective after years of experience. I too believe women are finally finding their place in positions of leadership and it’s both a necessity and very desirable.
Just heard from Heather cox Richardson on her live chat that today in 1872 (November 5 1872) Susan B Anthony cast her first vote (illegally) and was arrested for it. Gave me chills.
Yesterday I picked up my 13 yr old granddaughter from school. She had been expressing some anxiety over the election so on the spur of the moment, I said “Let’s have a celebration. Let’s celebrate the hard work we did (she helped me prepare 200 postcards to voters) and all the positive energy we’ve been sending out as well as our resilience and our hope and the fact that we did our best” And we did just that with chocolate malts. She felt a lot better and so did I. So let’s all celebrate this incredible moment when we all held hope together in this community. 💜
So nice to have a supportive group of like minded people.. even if it is online. Regardless of outcome, I think that being involved in groups like this has created strong bonds which will carry us on after the election.
I served as a Voter Protection person in West Philadelphia today, one of 1600 such people recruited to cover every polling place.
It's a gentrifying neighborhood, so very mixed. Couldn't have been smoother. Pretty good turnout, steady through the day. Five workers paying close attention: Judge of Election, three clerks, and one Voting Machine usher. People were whipping out their ID, only to be told that unless they're first time voters at this precinct, proof of ID isn't needed.
No goon squad. Guess the ads telling everyone how crime-ridden and dangerous our cities are, especially Black neighborhoods!, spooked the MAGAs.
All in all, Democracy's infrastructure seemed very sound today.
I have talked at least 10 friends off the ledge in the last 10 minutes. The news is not healthy it is dangerous and toxic. Turn off the news. It’s sick.
In 2016 I was worried and believed we would lose.
In 2024 I feel good and believe we will win.
We have been building this infrastructure for 8 years!!!
Organizing. Building community.
Doing the work. Year-round. Never stopping.
It will be a bumpy ride but we’re going to get there.
Spent nine hours working the boiler room in North Carolina to solve any polling place issues. Then went to Raleigh to celebrate Josh Stein. Will drop tired later.
Tomorrow we start carrying balance every day till the 14th saving democracy one vote at a time
Today is a propitious day.

Pgh native, here in MD. Thanks for all you are doing. Wish my vote were in PA
I love this!!! Thank you kind person🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yes, thank you Nancy! That is such important work :)

this is beautiful and brought me to tears. May your dad's memory be a blessing and your daughter's life continue to be a blessing! Light and love win!

Yes! Yes! yes! We got this💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸
I hope so, but just don't understand why someone who raised $1B and has celebrity endorsements like crazy hasn't totally kicked butt all over this country.
Beautifully said Paul, what a tribute to your father too.
Blessings and gratitude to you, Paul! 🙏🏽💕
"I vote for them." Truly beautiful words.
Thanks Paul. Wonderful context and sentiments.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful stories and reasons - they are wishes for us all. Blessings to you and your family!
Your personal comments brought tears. It’s a big night for your family and all Americans.
I'm with you, Paul. I hope it is a propitious day for the country!
Beautiful. Thank you.
Congratulations on your daughter.
May your father’s memory be a blessing to you.
(hand on heart)
(yes, there are tears)
I worked the polls until two today in Wisconsin, we had long lines and very respectful voters. Many many folks registering for the first time.
Same here in new hampshire!🤗

Thats great Cathy!!
Staying strong and hopeful. What a campaign Kamala ran💙🇺🇸we should all feel very proud of having such a strong ticket!!
We’re in it together💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙

Kamala is going to win, I’m sure of it. It’s going to be a glorious night!
It really is a contrast. No comparison really. Let’s go win this!!🇺🇸💙
Yes, especially gaming the Electoral College.
And... Thank you for the idea of adding a link to a picture!!
Heather must be my sister from another mother. 😉. 💯 agree with all of the above except this time high turn out could be the low propensity male voters not supporting our gal. If turn out is high I hope she is correct and I am wrong.
"low propensity male voters" don't vote.
Your description of Republicans is spot on. Couldn't agree more.

Do you make more sales when you post things like your comment here, or with the "Democrats are ruining this country" ones you post on right-leaning sites?
Maybe Heather was merely sharing a link in what she thought was a "friendly forum" with like-minded people.
Perhaps you could consider this possibility before accusing someone you don't know of inappropriate behavior.
It's unbecoming Christopher.
She blocked me ages ago. I’m familiar with her tactics.
Perhaps YOU could consider this possibility before accusing someone you don't know of inappropriate behavior.
I didn't accuse you of anything, merely suggested alternative reason for her posting a t-shirt link.
If the circumstances are as you say, I stand corrected.
Good evening.
Are you saying she’s not sure what and whom she supports?
I’m suggesting her interest is more in making a sale.
Is that her business? How do you know she’s making a sale?
How far are you planing to bend over backwards to make excuses for her?
Working the overnight shift as a poll challenger at an absentee ballot counting facility in Warren Michigan.
Thank you for doing that. Hope it is an uneventful night.
You and me both
That's awesome! I helped to schedule the poll challengers in Michigan and the team there (Steven Gordon) was so nice to work with. Do great work!
Thank you for your help in MI

My husband is a retired family doctor. He practiced in Oxford, Granville County. We did a lot of canvassing there in 2012 and 2016.
Thanks for all you have done, Jeff. The resources you marshalled on behalf of NC have made an enormous difference in Mecklenburg County. We appreciate it!

My local precinct had 80% turnout today. Not sure what that means, but if it's true nationally this is a record setting election.
I can’t imagine that many people are going to turn out to vote for a rapist, felon, and conman!
Oh yes they are. They even have signs out: "I'm voting for the 34-times convicted felon." You have to wonder where this country went so far off the rails that they believe this is a good idea.
Mary I hope so too
Are you in a swing state?
Florida
Ooo. FL! I really like the sound of that big turnout!!
Rhumond I am too! Pinellas County ....
Urban Florida, rural or suburban?
I have to say suburban . . . Unbelievable turnout really. No clue about results but polls are closed now.
Welp, high turnout tends to boost Dems. Here's hopin' the trend continues.

Worked election protection in Michigan all day and for the last two weeks. Feeling really good about the Great Lake state.
Great LakeS State. Lol. Been a long day.
So nice to have a supportive group of like minded people.. even if it is online. Regardless of outcome, I think that being involved in groups like this has created strong bonds which will carry us on after the election.
I agree and the real fight is just beginning. Democracy has been undermined and will take some continued hard work!! 💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸

How is Jeff Jackson doing for NC AG?
NC governor went Blue. That's good....
