Well, the last time the Dodgers won the World Series (!), Trump lost the election a week later. That's my favorite poll.

You made my day with that fun fact. The last time the Phillies won the world series was in 2008 and Obama won. When my team didn't make it, I thought it was a bad omen. Forgot about the Dodgers!

The early voting line at my Palm Beach county library location was too long for me to wait in yesterday. I’m going back (at an earlier time) today. Today’s my birthday. 🥳 So, if the line’s too long again, I’ll just consider it my party.

Happy Birthday, Shawn! My birthday present to myself Monday was voting. I wish I'd thought of it being my party! I live in a very red area in blue NJ, and the place was packed. I don't have a clue as to how the votes broke, but the turnout was incredible.

Southern Ocean County. Where I live, it's about 3:1. I lived in Mercer County for almost 40 years, and moved about 3 years ago, so this is new to me. Our town was gerrymandered into Van Drew territory. I'm hoping he's booted, but not expecting it.

I'm a lot more vocal and politically active than ever, though. I refuse to give up! If the worst happens, I won't be silent, and trump will never be my president.

Bob, I’m sorry to hear that area of ocean county has gone red. We lived in northern ocean county for 20 yrs before moving to TX to help family. We know how you feel about living in a sea of red. My cousins who live in Atlantic county report a red influence there too. Your votes count even more this year to combat the cult of trump, so keep on fighting like us Bluey’s here in TX. We might be able to kick Cruz out of the Senate this year. Wouldn’t that be something!

I'd love to see Cruz get his butt kicked! I really like Colin Allred.

We actually live in a 55+, with folks from all over the state, so at least our neighborhood is more neutral. I've made it a point to wear my Harris/Walz teeshirts into hostile territory (e.g., Home Depot and ShopRite), and have gotten a few smiles and a few dirty looks, but so far, no audible nasty comments.

I found it interesting to see that over 325 ballots submitted in my county had errors and would be rejected if not corrected. A list was printed in our county Patch and I saw 2 people I knew so I contacted them and they went through the process to correct the ballots and re-submitted them

I then called the Democratic Committee in my area to inquire about curing ballots and was told that they did not have that in place yet. Yikes! I told the rep that I would work as long as needed towoek on this project. I called twice and will follow up again today.

Susan, thank you for helping to cure ballots !! Certain states don’t require so some of those states may not prioritize…argh.

“Two-thirds of states require election officials to notify voters when there is a missing signature or a signature discrepancy—and require that voters must be given an opportunity to correct it. Details are provided in the table below.”

Thank you for the explanation concerning the outrageous decision by SCOTUS to purge voters in Virginia. I was very upset about this. Yesterday I watched Marc Elias with Congressman Jamie Raskin and Brian Tyler Cohen. Originally this was a Zoom session on Tuesday which I could not attend but the link was emailed to me the next morning. This is worth watching and should be on YouTube today. Jamie Raskin explained in detail why Hakeem Jeffries will be Speaker of the House on January 3 and what will happen. We will flip the House. I also feel the Senate will be OK. The Zoom session from Monday with Stacey Abrams, Eva Longoria, and Maria Teresa Kumar (founder of Vote Latino) is already on YouTube.

Here in Louisville, KY we have been gearing up our Rides to the Polls by calling hundreds of voters who do not have transportation to go vote. The response to our request for volunteer drivers has been amazing because people are ready to #DoSomething. If you have never volunteered in a R2P event, you are missing a fun, meaningful, poignant opportunity. Our riders range from people who live in shelters for the unhoused, elderly folks who have mobility issues to younger people who don't own cars. The conversations are priceless and the determination expressed by these voters to exercise their right and responsibility to go vote is a reminder to all of us about the privilege of casting a vote for Democracy.

When it drops, I believe today on YouTube, watch/listen today to Simon Rosenberg's chat with Tom Banier (subscriber meetup). It is brilliant and if I had time I would copy & paste all my notes I wrote to a friend while listening last night. My words transformed & calmed him. He lives in a far more 'red' area of NC (Lincoln Co).

Please please please embrace hope. I head soon enough to be a poll observer this morning to be inside at an EV location. Here in Durham. These have been joyful and truly fascinating. The chief judges kick butt.

Yesterday I wept and weot again as I witnessed Kamala Harris' rally at Walnut Creek in Raleigh. This is real and to experience firsthand one becomes a true believer. Call it a religious experience into ever more goodness. Please keep listening closely to Robert for he keeps speaking truth of this palpable energy.

Here is a daily dose of perspective too. 5 reasons for hope from the kamala 4 prez substack. https://open.substack.com/pub/kamala4prez/p/5-reasons-for-hope?r=f0qfn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

I have always been suspicious of polls, because no one I know answers random phone calls, or polling emails. Customer feedback? too bad! We are just not sharing our thoughts with randos asking for them. According to the kamala4prez website those polls would not typically be including Gen Z voters, because they use different media. Even though my daughter did not know what Twitch was, her boyfriend does enough to say it is not a good site. I never heard of it. What do the pollsters use?

I worry about my 19-year old knowing what is going on in her university because she does not check her emails. Well, she does in a select way. Her university account, she has to actually login and check on. I hope she does that. So, no one is reaching her by email or text message, because she is going to ignore polling ones as spam. Same with phone calls on her cell phone, which has a German number but even before, because she is only answering calls from people she wants to talk to. It is the same with the rest of the Gen-Zers in my family.

Expand full comment

Linda, no one under 40 uses email anymore! Or land lines. Pollsters are using antiquated technologies to do their work. Has anyone written an analysis of the mechanisms they use to poll? They don't seem to use social media, Telegram, What's App, WeChat, Signal. Maybe they do. Or maybe they just use email, land lines, and whatever cell phone numbers end up in their databases. But I'm sort of doubting they use any kind of outreach media that 21st century people use.

Expand full comment

Exactly Christina. Since I don't use social media that would not be a way to reach me either. I don't answer our landline, which we keep for emergencies, and because my mom with dementia sometimes calls it. My family mostly communicates with Signal though, and no one is getting access to us through Signal that we didn't invite. So, while I am reading this in email, my Gen-Z daughter has 3 emails accounts, and the one I know she hardly ever looks at. That is she looks at it, but does not open my emails. She has one for university that she looks at when she needs to, and then a business email for her hobby business of buying and selling clothing. If I am not an item from a vintage online store, she does not care what I have to say. However, on Signal she will respond regularly, and we call with it too. We also do online crossword puzzles together as well on Signal with our laptops and screen sharing. Maybe she looks at her Goodreads in Social where she keeps that, because she sometimes gets book recommendations from friends or just keeps up with what they are reading. And, my mom, who has dementia will answer the phone, but she cannot vote, so whatever she tells them about any candidate is mute.

Our 5 Day Mission to Victory

I was never in the military, but the past 10 days and the next 5 are probably as close as I'll ever come to understanding the "fog of war".

Right now we don't know if we're winning or losing and everyone is terrified by the prospect of losing.

We don't know enough about the other guys numbers, their strategy or understand their anger even though we've been struggling against them for 8 years.

We can't be sure if our actions for the next five days will get us to victory.

What we do have is HOPE and ENERGY!

We know our Mission: WIN ON NOV 5.

Elections are a numbers game and we have two BIG advantages.

1. Aligned with our Constitution and described in its Bill of Rights, our cause is just and right. Our victory will safeguard our country and benefit the future of ALL Americans. Our loss will bring America into a dark, dark time.

2. Kamala inherited this battle with a 7 million vote advantage and seems to have held +90% of that advantage together. Her miraculous campaign may have added 10-12 million new voters. This should be enough for victory.

But sadly, the impossible to ignore "wrong, biased polls" keep saying this race is still a tie.

So our mission is to Get Out Every Potential Democratic Vote We Can by Nov 5!! Period!!

If we have 1,000,000 volunteers calling voters, knocking doors and lit dropping across 7 swing states for the next 5 days AND each volunteer adds just 3 forgotten votes to the total, we can increase Kamala's vote total by 3,000,000 votes on Nov 5. That's 40,000-45,000 votes in each state, more than enough to WIN In a race as close as this year's.

There are two aphorisms that fit this situation:

1. Vince Lombardi, great coach of the Green Bay Packers.."Winning isn't everything. Winning is the only thing"

2. I paraphrase Tim Walz.."Work your butts off now..we can all sleep after we win!" or maybe he said when we die..but we get the point.

Go Harris/Walz!!

Dear Bob, Thank you for trudging through getting your dispatch out to us while battling a cold. You're a trooper to be so caring.

I have heard you admire Heather Cox Richardson, often. There is not an ounce of rivalry between the two of you but rather a lovely, combined sense of mission. So I hope it's alright if I use this platform to urge readers to read HCR's Letter to an American sent out last night for this morning's read. It paints the impact a Trump win will have on the country with people like Elon Musk in cabinet positions, and ts terrifying.

My only wish is that Kamala's crew will be made aware of this letter and use some of its content in her eleventh hour speechs. I can see nothing more effective in driving voters to the polls.

I am on Substack only because HCR paved the way. My only problem with HCR is that I agree with her so much that I fear I will merely parrot her words if I read her daily newsletter before I post. I am a paid subscriber to HCR. Also, I don’t think HCR gets the credit and recognition she deserves. I think she may be America’s most important political commentator and yet you rarely hear or see her on major media. The New York Magazine ignored her when it did its recent issue on important voices in media. But the magazine did include the editor of Vogue and the head of ESPN! So, post away! Heather is the spiritual godmother of my newsletter!

I see that Trump is apparently visiting VA and NM in the next couple days. I am getting the feeling that if the campaign could put him in a padded cell with a high-end golfing simulator, complete with a crowd yelling he's the real Arnold Palmer, they'd do it. It's bizarre to see a campaign trying to hide their candidate in the closing days.

I’ve been volunteering with our local Democratic Party for nearly four years. We’ve been eagerly doing everything we can to Get The Vote Out in a rural county in North Carolina that is historically RED. I want to share an article from today’s newspaper. The referenced Chris Cooper is a Professor of Political Science at Western Carolina University.

Voter turnout in Jackson County is above the state average and among the top third of counties.

“In terms of partisan identification, statewide, Republican turnout is slightly exceeding Democratic turnout among early voters for the first time in history,” Cooper said. “In Jackson, however, the story is a little different. In Jackson, Democratic turnout is exceeding Republican turnout by several percentage points.

“Of course, there’s no way to know what will happen on Election Day, and who will win, but, at least in this early stage, the Democratic Party mobilization in Jackson appears to be working better than in the rest of the state.”
