True peace is not merely the absence of war,

it is the presence of justice. – Jane Addams

Jane Addams in 1931 was the second woman ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1931/addams/biographical/

We have an absence of justice now with the current Supreme Court. I could never have imagined that democracy would be dismantled by the Supreme Court of the United States but here we are watching it happen. It is happening and there seems very little way to stop it with the legislative branch so weak and divided. Impeachment is a joke so that isn't a remedy. The Congress doing anything about the Supreme Court seems remote at best. Even the executive branch Department of Justice feels ineffective and moving far too slowly for the events of our day. ....and I'm an optimist! Let's import some courage and determination from Ukraine. They know that democracy is worth fighting for. Join the Union. jointheunion.us Let's all unite and make this country a democracy again. We the People, all of us this time!

Robert, thank you for your kind words. Here is a must read for optimists. This talk by Dr. Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, blew my mind! Dr. Seligman talks about agency. Agency is a mindset that consists of efficacy, optimism, and imagination. When cultures and epochs believe in individual agency, progress occurs. When they do not, stagnation occurs. Dr. Seligman believes we are about to enter an age of tremendous progress!

Happy birthday, Robert!

And thanks so much to Judith & Gwenn! An organization I would like to see added to the list and everyone's attention is the Planned Parenthood Foundation. They provide health care and family planning services to millions of women who otherwise could not afford it and have been under constant, sometimes violent attacks because of that. The development of the birth control pill was sponsored by PPF's founder, Margaret Sanger, who recruited a wealthy philanthropist to fund it. Her activism enabled women for the first time to have some control over their lives and bodies. (Interestingly, Sanger was personally opposed to abortion, seeing it as representing a failure of the planning process.)

An unappreciated effect of contraception is its contribution to the environment by reducing the growth of the human population. In service of our climate goals, it ought to be universally available for free! We could all live well without extinguishing other species and trashing the planet if there were not so many of us.

So what is it about the Hubble Newsletter List that makes my weepy? Thank you Judith and Gwenn, I know how much work that is. It's also proof that there are so many people working to right our democracy...89 organizations and counting! I've been feelign this as I read the newsletter but to have it all in one place! And it makes a hugely valuable resource to help people go to work!

Happy Birthday Robert. My birthday was yesterday. I've been feeling a sense of personal well being and gratitude for having a good life and wonderful friends. Here's a TED talk I like to watch every few months: https://www.ted.com/talks/louie_schwartzberg_nature_beauty_gratitude?language=en

Oh I had no idea who he was...."we protect what we fall in love with" and so many other powerful words to go with his amazing images. Thank you Cathy, and many birthday blessings!

Also, the narrator of the film is Benedictine Brother David Steinl-Rast. I heard him speak at a seminar in the 1990s. I was almost rude staring at him trying to figure out what he had in his beautiful sense of well-being and gratitude. Whatever he had, I wanted to have it too. The first time I saw the TED talk I immediately recognized Brother David's voice. Now my dream is for the world is to measure our success as a people with a Well-Being Index as important or more important than GNP. Great Britain and some other countries are already doing this. Every piece of legislation coming out of Parliament much show how it will improve the well-being of the British people. Only around 20% of Americans feel they are living a life of well-being. I'm a big fan of Dr. Martin Seligman and his PERMA theory of Well Being. Any of his TED talks are worthwhile. Here is another great interview with Dr. Seligman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1hauE_OKP8

So Kevin McCarthy believed that extremists in his caucus were putting people at risk on January 6th? Let’s see, that would be all of them but Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger and those few who voted to impeach Trump the second time—notably including McCarthy himself in the first group. So-called respectable or “moderate” Republicans are perfect examples of the wisdom that all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.

Belated Happy Birthday, Robert!

Thank you, Judith and Gwinn. This is a very helpful spreadsheet, full of excellent organizations. An impressive list!

Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights https://grandmothersforreproductiverights.org/ was mentioned in your newsletter years ago, so of course it is not on this list yet. We have been growing quickly and are working on federal policy in coalition with other organizations, while ramping up our storytelling initiative. We have a range of educational programs and work to support activists across the country. The voices of elders, some of whom lived through the pre-Roe years, are important for education and culture change in the horrific moment we are in now.

Our ROE (Reproductive Options Exist) initiative seeks to educate about fake clinics (AKA "Crisis Pregnancy Centers"). Those opposed to a person's right to bodily autonomy seek to have these "centers" replace actual clinics that offer non-judgemental, all-options, medically licenced reproductive health centers.

Our website is in drastic need of updating, but we are always looking for new members and volunteers. You can contact us (Lucy, Cait or Kelli) at info@grrnow.org. Thanks!

Robert, you write, "Congress could drastically “limit” the Supreme Court’s appellate jurisdiction until the Court adopts an enforceable code of ethics of its own volition." Alas, the Supreme Court would have the final say in whether this was constitutional, and I think we all know how that would play out. How many times do we have to say that expanding the court is the only way to neutralize this rogue (formerly) Supreme Court?

I am with you in applauding the work of Judith and Gwenn to help us find ways to make a difference. This is the kind of behind-the scenes activism that works.

Also, thank you for including the article by Robert Leonard. Very heartening. I love the paragraph you quoted.

And finally, happy birthday!

So, the Court has already spoken on this topic on several occasions and recognized that Congress can limit its appellate jurisdiction; it would be hard to conclude otherwise given the express language of the Constitution. (The amount in controversy requirements of diversity jurisdiction are a clear example.) But at least one justice has said that Congress cannot strip the Supreme Court of ALL appellate jurisdiction, which is probably correct because that would have the effect of abolishing a constitutional function. But there is plenty of room to diminish the Court if it refuses to impose a code of ethics.

Good to know, although I don't trust this court not to find some way to circumvent Congress' power.

Mr. Hubbell. I don't know if I've been around long enough to take part in the Newsletter family's chorus of birthday wishes, but to a fellow grandparent I'll give it a shout anyway, "Happy Birthday, Robert Hubbell." And more thanks than I can express for your newsletter. You provide a good checklist of the events of the day but, more important to me, your strong voice with its clear sense of simply what is right and what is not right in our journey through this world. There is nothing more valuable to this old woman than someone who takes the risk of always putting the cards on the table. Thank you and these two wonderful women who compiled the list of organizations. If there's a more useful resource around I can't think what it would be.
