I am in TOTAL agreement with Pat Taksen--one barnburner speech after another! Absent some highly unlikely and utterly unexpected negative event in the next 80 days, the presidential election will be COMFORTABLY won by VP Harris. The logjam has been broken tonight and the specter of a Trump/Vance autocracy has been hugely diminished--maybe even eliminated. Bravo Joe Biden, Bravo Kamala Harris, Bravo the Democratic Party that has preserved democracy from its greatest threat since the Civil War. I look forward to hearing, not that many years down the road, these two words: Donald who?
Roger - let's not forget we still must deal with the most outdated electoral system still in place - The ELECTORAL COLLEGE. If this election were solely based on number of votes (remember Hillary) I wouldn't worry but we have to keep at it until at least November 5th and most likely beyond because the cult that is trumpism will not go quietly.
Mr. Ward — I am well aware that the Electoral College victory/Popular Vote defeat of both Bush in 2000 and HRC in 2016 inclines most of my fellow liberals to call for its demise. Aside from the minor practical point that the GOP would never permit it, the reality of something called “orphan votes” means that the EC actually in theory, if perhaps not in practice, works IN FAVOR of the Dems. To put it simply, under the winner-takes-all statewide system, the votes of every Republican in CA, NY, IL, VA et al are lost to the GOP. The comparable number of orphan votes a Democratic candidate loses from TX, FL, OH, et al is substantially lower. So, my fellow Dems, be careful what you wish for!
It is entirely possible, if not likely, that Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri and Nebraska will flip Blue, this year. Texas and Tennessee are also in play.
Roger - interesting take on the EC and I see some merit to the logic but I think it’s outlived its usefulness in 2024 annd going forward. All-in-all I’d rather depend son most votes wins. Biden won by more than 7 million so I think there’s a buffer there.
I watch this campaign and I’m overwhelmed with pride right in my chest. Optimism, joy, hope are the best weapons against fascism. DNC! Don’t lie - did you see this coming? I didn’t. Harris and Walz truly are empowering rock stars. Elevate! Our guardians are awake! Spell breakers.
Time to wear this "Kamala removes stubborn orange stains" shirt, now more than ever 🤣 👇
I am not in Chicago, but as a native Chicagoan, I am with everyone there in spirit. My country is 7 hours ahead, but I am up early catching up on what I was too tired to watch last night. I love Jill's and Ashley's introductions to Biden's speech. His speech is laying it out there for what has been done by his and Harris' administration. The Power of Women! Woohoo!
We owe Joe the debt of a lifetime for his service and sacrifice. I am thrilled to see him recognized for all that he has done. And I’m proud to be a Democrat tonight.
I loved her comment that her dad was the OG "girl dad".
And the story about him taking Amtrack back to Delaware so he could wish her happy birthday and then hopping the next train back because he was negotiating an important bill.
I'm not sure tRump remembers his kids' names much less their birthdays! Maybe jealousy is the true source of Jr. and Eric's venom against Biden!
You have capped a career of significant contribution with an act of selfless patriotism, breathing new life into our democracy. Your passing the torch is a rare act of enlightened leadership.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs culminates in self-actualization. Posthumously-published writings show that late in life, he saw another stage as the ultimate: self-transcendence. He thus aligned his theory with a central teaching of all the world’s great religions.
For decades you have been a role model of self-actualization, skillfully using your gifts for the common good. Now you are a model of self-transcendence.
Your humble response here came to mind as I drove this morning, and someone was swinging wide, getting off the freeway, nearly plowed into me. There’s a wide green bike path that should have indicated to the driver to stay in her lane but… Anyway, I could hear my husband‘s voice in my head, when things would happen and he would gently say, “We’ve all done it.” Sometimes in the moment it didn’t feel good to hear that, and yet it’s true.
I agree. I still remember the hearing where the house was questioning Michael Cohen. Everybody else seemed to be using their 5 minute speaking time to propagandize - except AOC who was asking really good questions. Questions which likely led to Alvin Bragg's investigation of Trump's business fraud around inflation and deflation of asset values.
I agree, but where was THIS Hillary when we needed her in 2016? The country could have been spared the nightmare of Donald Trump had she not arrogantly and ultimately stupidly ran a braindead campaign--one that needlessly put a dangerous dime-store demagogue in the White House for four years and in our nightmares for nine years and counting.
I remember comments back in 2016 from union groups in the rust belt who tried to convince their members not to believe anything Trump said, but it fell on deaf ears then. (His reputation for stiffing contractors was well known back then if anyone had cared to scratch the surface). I don't think Trump will have another opportunity to pull the wool over their eyes this time.
Sure let's blame Hillary Clinton for the GOP's decades of misinformation and disinformation campaigns against her, latent and also blatant misogyny among the electorate, and malfeasance by Comey.
Never h….. her, a word I don’t use and despise. Paid little to no attention at all to the GOP, which I learned to do at a very young age.
Just didn’t always trust her motivations because of her presentation. I think what we all saw last night was the true Hillary, who isn’t running for anything this time and can now be totally open.
“Hate was on the march in America. Old ghosts in new garments. Giving oxygen to old forces that had long sought to destroy America — “there are very fine people on both sides” was the response from their president — but in an America where honesty, dignity, decency and hate has no safe harbor, I knew I had to run.”
Of course, David Brooks of NYT had a snarky response to Joe's speech, saying it was bland and not what he expected. Will the NYT ever find their way back? Joe was great, I was alone watching the speech and spontaneously started clapping when it was over. Way to go Joe!
I was thinking it was a speech for the ages. Much like 'I have a dream' or The Gettysburg address. Although he did one recently that was just as good or better so perhaps I'm wrong.
So many people were spot on, tonight!! Shawn Fain, AOC, Hillary Clinton, Rep. Clyburn and Rep. Raskin, and wow-o-wow Rep. Jasmine Crockett!! Sen Warnock, woooo and now the family speakers… can’t wait for Joe to give us the ballast to keep straight while we keep on.
I watched MSNBC and CNN commentators. ALL they talked about, literally ALL, was how late it was on the East Coast, how the organizers should have managed the schedule better, how too many people were scheduled to talk, how late it was on the East Coast, how it took too long for the main speaker to come up, how it was very late at night for the president to talk, how LATE it was on the East Coast. Not one substantive comment. What is wrong with these people?
cspan’s broadcast was impressive.. i felt like i was in the arena, with a great seat! i saw it right from the beginning, the trooping of the colors, the national anthem sung by the children’s soul choir of chicago, the pledge led by 2 children from chicago, the call to order by the chair, the co chair, the honor given to diversity equity and inclusion as the hallmark of not only our democracy but of humanity..
literally, like Tim Walz, I was crying the whole night, it was so moving! When the co chair gaveled the meeting to a close cspan’s production team didn’t want to leave.. they were grabbing delegates in the floor for interviews..
we can listen to the chattering all day but I am looking forward to the next 3 nights! Joe Biden was masterful, the whole evening was phenomenal and boy do we need this!!
So glad I dumped the MSM for the first time and watched livestream on YouTube PBS...it was the best! I saw the entire convention! ALL the speeches and with no interruption! Much better viewing experience, for me, anyway!
I started with Biden's speech, and it is powerful! I love that he said that he has 5 months left and he has a lot left to do and will get it done. He has accomplished so much and is the best president in my lifetime, and my mom, who is 90-years-old says the same thing.
Crockett is superb when speaking more extemporaneously. Truly talented woman, rising star! Tonight that didn’t come through as much for me. Teleprompter and more scripted? Typically I love her.
The speeches thus far have been spectacular. Crockett's speech reminded me of Obama in 2008. Hillary could have won if she had spoken out like she did tonight in 2016. AOC showed grace that I had thought was beyond her capability. Warnock was mesmerizing. And now I'm going to listen to Joe.
Well, she technically DID win, the popular vote. And knowing what we know now, was the 2016 election stolen? Trump has always accused others of what he has done, so...it stands to reason.
Of course it was! Putin's social media machine shaved a point off an electoral college tally here in 2016, a half point there, and presto-chango, Trump "won" by a few points in electoral college land. Watch the documentary Active Measures ($2 on Amazon, unless you're boycotting Bezos). Where have you been??? But Democrats are good losers, unlike Trump who is a sore loser the world has never seen the like of.
AOC has slowly been moving away from “The Squad” she created. She is much savvier than the others and has decided to play the long game after some novice errors. A gifted politician.
We owe Joe the debt of a lifetime for his service and sacrifice. I am thrilled to see him recognized for all that he has done. And I’m proud to be a Democrat tonight.
The depth and talent and brilliance on display has been astounding. And we’re just getting started!
What a wonderful night! I keep thinking it can't get any better than this...and then it does! I have always loved Joe Biden and Chris Coombs words touched my heart. Kleenex is never far from my side.
I am totally blown away by the magnificence of our convention & the brilliance of every speaker. I have never been more proud to be a democrat
I am in TOTAL agreement with Pat Taksen--one barnburner speech after another! We still need to work as though we are way behind!

The electoral college is the opposite of a representative democracy. What can we do to rid ourselves of this terrible weapon against democracy?
Blue wave, blue tsunami. https://www.fieldteam6.org/
We have a platform … hell yes! It’s not just flag waving !

The more joy Harris/Walz spreads the more doom and gloom Trump will spew!
When we fight, we win 💙
I am not in Chicago, but as a native Chicagoan, I am with everyone there in spirit. My country is 7 hours ahead, but I am up early catching up on what I was too tired to watch last night. SAME- it's FIRE
Im with you, Pat!! So awesome 🫢
We owe Joe the debt of a lifetime for his service and sacrifice. I am thrilled to see him recognized for all that he has done. And I’m proud to be a Democrat tonight.
Biden has been the best president in my lifetime. My mom who is 90-years-old says the same thing too.
yes Linda and a true American hero,
Jimmy Carter was marvelous, too!
Who knew Ashley Biden is a social worker in Philly working with formerly incarcerated women. Not a grifter!
WHAT! not making deals with sheiks for golf courses???
Not bowing down to Putin like Trump does and Ukraine is still free. Slava Ukraini!
What an amazing speech and person. In a night of such depth and talent on that stage and in the room. Whew.
Ashley gave a wonderful speech introducing her dad. His wife Jill's speech was wonderful.
What does the OG stand for? I know it has to be something good because she loves her father as we all do!
Someone who is highly respected; authentic, original.
Open Letter to President Biden.
Dear Mr. President:
You have capped a career of significant contribution with an act of selfless patriotism, breathing new life into our democracy. Your passing the torch is a rare act of enlightened leadership.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs culminates in self-actualization. Posthumously-published writings show that late in life, he saw another stage as the ultimate: self-transcendence. He thus aligned his theory with a central teaching of all the world’s great religions.
For decades you have been a role model of self-actualization, skillfully using your gifts for the common good. Now you are a model of self-transcendence.
Thank you for your gift and your inspiration.

Beautiful and absolutely true!
Beautifully and wisely said. A spiritual and transformative moment. Thanks for the insight. Maslow was a master.
Beautiful, thanks.
Also, hooray for OAC and Hillary!
Ummm.. AOC. :-)
Best speech Hillary ever gave. Like Rachel said, deeply emotional.
Hope James Comey watched it- she would have been perhaps our best ever!
I love AOC transformation into a country first Democrat... she's a huge talent and smart cookie... we will see lots more from her.
I think we're looking at the first Latina president.
I can't wait to see both of them and Jazmine Crocett. I am in EU and 7 hours ahead, so waking up and catching up on speeches.
you are in for a treat!
Oops. I was a little distracted!
Been there/done that - many times.
Your humble response here came to mind as I drove this morning, and someone was swinging wide, getting off the freeway, nearly plowed into me. AOC is underrated. She’s got it together.
They both crushed it, didn't they? Jasmine was good too.
Blame the people who didnt do their homework, wanted to be dazzled, and voted for Trump instead of going with competence.
Forward!
Sure let's blame Hillary Clinton for the GOP's decades of misinformation and disinformation campaigns against her, latent and also blatant misogyny among the electorate, and malfeasance by Comey.
Completely agree with you. Didn’t like her nor trust her completely then, with her intellectual arrogance and elitist behavior. Guess she’s mellowed.
The GOP did a 30+ year propaganda campaign against her which was really effective. People were predisposed to hate her.
Never h….. her, a word I don’t use and despise. Paid little to no attention at all to the GOP, which I learned to do at a very young age.
Just didn’t always trust her motivations because of her presentation. I think what we all saw last night was the true Hillary, who isn’t running for anything this time and can now be totally open.
Not mellowed at all - grown into the work.
“Hate was on the march in America. Old ghosts in new garments. I discontinued my NYT subscription and am consideri the same with wapo. They are no longer “news” papers - they are slanted right wing ads
same here. I would get so frustrated reading their take on politics.
Me too!
I was thinking it was a speech for the ages. Much like 'I have a dream' or The Gettysburg address. Although he did one recently that was just as good or better so perhaps I'm wrong.

cspan is the way to go.. pure convention no talking head interruptions.. try it! we have 3 more nights!!
DNC YouTube live without commentary https://youtube.com/@demconvention
That's how I watched it too.
Well, PBS News Hour did great, too.
tnx-- the commentary was driving me crazy. I wanted to see the actual convention and can listen to rerun of MSNBC later
cspan’s broadcast was impressive.. i felt like i was in the arena, with a great seat! i saw it right from the beginning, the trooping of the colors, the national anthem sung by the children’s soul choir of chicago, the pledge led by 2 children from chicago, the call to order by the chair, the co chair, the honor given to diversity equity and inclusion as the hallmark of not only our democracy but of humanity..

⬆️
I'm pretty sure those were Jamie Harrison's sons ;-)
oops i missed that! you are right! all the more riveting.. a family affair!
I watched MSNBC and didn’t hear what you are saying you heard. I heard very thoughtful commentary.
I didn’t hear any of that on msnbc.
That is why I am catching up by watching the speeches on PBS.
They all talk too much... it shouldnot be about them.
PBS gave the content, not talk
So glad I dumped the MSM for the first time and watched livestream on YouTube PBS...it was the best! I saw the entire convention! ALL the speeches and with no interruption! Much better viewing experience, for me, anyway!
I watched on NPR. No commentary.
I started with Biden's speech, and it is powerful! I love that he said that he has 5 months left and he has a lot left to do and will get it done. He has accomplished so much and is the best president in my lifetime, and my mom, who is 90-years-old says the same thing.
I thought jasmine was the weakest of the speakers actually. What did you like about her?
She spoke to Kamala’s empathy, something that she’s been accused of lacking. It
was an important moment.
Crockett is superb when speaking more extemporaneously. Truly talented woman, rising star! Tonight that didn’t come through as much for me. Teleprompter and more scripted? Typically I love her.
I thought Rep. Crockett was superb. And she delivered so many Tik Tok ready sound bites!
Is there a bad orator amongst them? I don’t think so… AOC looking like presidential contender eventually. Fabulous lineup
Well, she technically DID win, the popular vote. And knowing what we know now, was the 2016 election stolen? Trump has always accused others of what he has done, so...it stands to reason.

Yes! I was so impressed by HRC's speech!
She is a brilliant woman
Where would this country be now if she had taken her rightful place as president. The electoral college has got to go.
where would we be now if Al Gore had taken his rightful place! Ah well... let's look forward. We have a big fight ahead.
Ashley, Joe and Jill’s daughter , was awesome and so moving ❤️❤️
AOC has slowly been moving away from “The Squad” she created. She is much savvier than the others and has decided to play the long game after some novice errors. A gifted politician.
she took a note from Nancy.
Yes after AOC’s Green New Deal stunt which sadly led to the GND never getting to the floor AOC learned do not mess with Pelosi.
Maybe she is growing up?
Just remember, Hillary did win the popular vote. She and Al Gore got screwed with an archaic Electoral College. It must go!
Terrific- so proud of my party and it’s fantastic leaders. Such a deep bench, great talent- gives me real hope!
We owe Joe the debt of a lifetime for his service and sacrifice. I am thrilled to see him recognized for all that he has done. And I’m proud to be a Democrat tonight.
The depth and talent and brilliance on display has been astounding. And we’re just getting started!
Our party is the party of freedom.
Hillary speech was wow!!’n
Everything is wow! What a night!
What Biden did will go down in history with what George Washington did as the first President of the U. S. Biden saved Democracy
Hilary was on fire! Spot on! I am so glad I caught her speech!
I’ve got to hear it again!
What a wonderful night! I keep thinking it can't get any better than this...and then it does! I have always loved Joe Biden and Chris Coombs words touched my heart. Kleenex is never far from my side.
Me too!!
And me
AOC is a President in Waiting. The ladies are knocking it OUT OF THE PARK tonight.
I had the same thought. She and Jasmine Crockett too.
Yes!! I’ve always liked AOC, but she has grown so much!
Agree!
