There was a very revealing moment early in the CNN interview. Most people named Dana pronounce it “Day-na.” Ms. Bash says “D’anna.” In answering one of the early questions, Kamala Harris used the more common pronunciation, but immediately and without prompting corrected herself. That spoke volumes. She did not have to do it. Trump would never in a million years notice that he’d made a mistake (let alone correct it), but she did. If you knew nothing else about the race this year, that should be enough to decide your vote.

In the Abominable Showman's denigrating comments on the interview, he referred to Dana, whom he knows well, as "Day-na." I hope VP Harris and Gov. Walz continue to get under his skin. They're the antidote to the madness.

To Robert's title today, I would add, "and the end of Chaos."

I don't watch CNN so maybe I am wrong about this, but I thought they deliberately had her 'stuffed' into a corner with poor lighting on her. She looked 'tired', again I suspect it was deliberate.

Expand full comment

Sorry she looked marvelous. Her smile was contagious

Expand full comment

I agree with Marsha. From the clips I saw this morning, not only did the lighting seem poor, but how they had her seated in relation with Walz made her look subservient to him and to the interviewer. Was that on purpose, kind of like when you are called into the boss' office, and your chair is much lower to the floor than his or hers?

Let's not overthink or over-analyze this stuff. 99% of the people watching don't care about any of this inside baseball. As Robert said, she and Tim were terrific. Especially compared the those other folks.

I'm with you, Jon! I didn't see the interview when it was aired and didn't get to see it until now (other than some snips that were not representative out of context). I think they were excellent, and made Dana look small and petty.

One thing that struck me is that many of these "heavy-hitting" reporters have no problem asking gotcha questions or inverted GOP talking point questions of the Democrats, but they won't treat the Republicans the same way. I am not convinced that they are intentionally carrying water for the Republican nominee, but rather that they are intimidated by him. Perhaps we need to encourage them to follow the lead of ABC's Rachel Scott at the NABJ convention where she put him on the spot and he clearly showed his.

Reporters need to understand that balanced reporting requires following the same rules for investigation and exposition of candidates from both parties.

thank you Jon. we ALL have become ridiculously critical and opinionated over the most unimportant things. She was fabulous and Tim stayed in his lane which was decided beforehand,

Keep in mind--Kamala Harris is 5'4". Tim Walz is 5'10". And, if my perception isn't off base, relative to her height, she has long legs. Meaning...she sits *low* even for a person of her height. I think it would be a huge mistake for her to be aided by a 'booster' seat. Nothing would give Trump's campaign more joy.

Having a name that is always mispronounced - I go by Margie, short for Margaret, with a hard G as in go - I can relate to both Kamala and Dana and their pronunciation challenges. It took me a long time to have the courage to correct people but once they know the right way to pronounce Margie, they never forget!

I always enjoy Robert's writing skills....

This alliteration was quite pleasing, and perfect, describing Kamala: "She was poised, personable, presidential, and prepared." She was all of those, and more. We are so fortunate to have her and Walz with us for November.

And thank you again, Robert, for your consideration of those of us (many of us?) who are exhausted, sick and tired of hearing about tffg despite the need to push msm to stop ignoring the orange elephant in the room: "Rather than junk up the newsletter with other Trump gibberish"

I thought the concluding image of the Sagittarius Star Cloud was beautiful. Thank you for bringing such notable food for the soul to our eyes. Good night!

Count me among the "many of us," JR, who'd rather not read (or listen to) "Trump gibberish." However, I do understand - and applaud - Robert taking it on so we don't have to.

I saw the interview last evening. I at first I did not like the tone of the questions and then realized that they were perfect to demonstrate the character and strength of Harris. Hopefully Independent and Republicans watched and interestingly the negative comments Trump has launched about Harris being a poor debater or not being smart flew out the window. If Trump watched which I know he did then he is planning to wiggle out of the debate. What Harris did for me was to demonstrate she is the real deal and she is certainly

Presidential and cares deeply for the middle class. She is everything Trump isn’t and never could be. She is authentic.

"I at first I did not like the tone of the questions and then realized that they were perfect to demonstrate the character and strength of Harris."

That's an interesting take -- I didn't think of it that way. A twitter commentator noted that every question, except for four of them, were asking her to respond to GOP talking points, and went on to say this is why MSM doesn't deserve to criticize Kamala for not doing interviews, etc.

But, yeah, your view is valid too. The flip side to that argument is that it gives Kamala a chance to rebut all those GOP talking point.

Food for thought . . .

While Trump was crazy-ranting that "nobody eats bacon anymore," Kamala Harris was being regaled for her cooking ("bacon is a spice") and values ("if you cook for people, you care for people"). Rep. Eric Swalwell and chefs Susan Feniger, Stuart O'Keeffe, and Suzanne Goin organized the Cooking for Kamala Zoom call which drew 28,000 viewers and raised $220,000 for the Harris-Walz campaign. Rep. Swalwell with his quick wit was an outstanding host, and the event added joy along with cooking tips and recipes!

"A longer exposure would have resulted in sharper stars." Truer words were never written, Robert.

As Kamala and Tim gain exposure, they become sharper and clearer. We are blessed that they are running.

Same is holding true for the R opposition on myriad indie media. CNN/Bash did themselves no favors by parroting MAGA hit points. What micron of respect we had left was vaporized by her vapidity. Old-school media will lumber/stumble around to the truth -- likely star date 10 September 2024.

Dana Bash is not a great interviewer, but I think we are often too suspicious and ready to see any question as hostile. Bash gave Kamala plenty of chances to make her points, and that’s all we should look for.

I think some of the early questions were hostile, but credit Harris for not taking the adversarial bait, which largely took the bite out of the questions and made them a non-factor. Ms. Bash’s questions changed tone as the interview went on.

I agree with Robert that Harris and Walz rose above the baiting and performed well. Nevertheless, I was disappointed with the questions themselves. Bash chose to carp at things that have already been litigated in the press for weeks now. I would have thought that whoever got the first (maybe only?) big sit-down interview of the campaign would have been more innovative and curious.

I think we have to look at this in the same way that coaches and athletes approach a new season. When their 'new' schedules are announced, and fans complain about how their team's schedule is the toughest one in the league--facing off against all the best teams--coaches will immediately respond: "Ya' gotta beat the best to be the best." If Kamala only participates in *friendly* interviews with easy questions...well...that's what Trump does. Anyone can look good doing that. It actually diminishes credibility, and provides a mountain of fodder for your opponent.

Expand full comment

Asking Harris what she thought about Trump’s comment regarding her biracial identity seems almost as dumb as the Trump comment itself. Cmon CNN, is that all ya got?

Expand full comment

I respectfully disagree with your assessment. The purpose of that question was not to hear her answer. The real question was--how will she react? In past elections, a very successful tactic for Trump has been 'baiting' his opponents; goading them into rants. That's exactly what Trump was deliberately doing when he made the statement. To this point, Harris has not taken the bait. Bash is the first person who had an opportunity to confront Harris directly with the comment. And...she didn't take the bait. She demonstrated that she can neutralize a bully. That's *presidential* behavior.

Expand full comment

Don't agree. Everyday Americans have no idea what a friendly interview is as opposed to a hostile one. Harris should do a second (final?) interview with a friendly reporter. Having done one with a hostile reporter should silence some crititcs, and doing one with a friendly interviewer will leave the everyday American with a warm and fuzzy positive feeling of Harris "doing interviews," close to the debate.

Optics matter immensely with a largely-oblivious electorate. Facts and analysis don't factor in. Alas. I'm not saying it's a good thing. But to judge everyday Americans' reactions on the basis of how you or I would react is naive, I fear.

The anti-Harris forces were busy trying to bring their best investigative talents to question and disprove Harris' claim that she worked at McDonald's when a young woman. Their journalistic talents were unable to get proof of it from the McDonald's corporation, suggesting a big scandal to prove she's a liar. Trump's lies are apparently too easy to prove for the present-day truth-trackers, so they are after the big lie and disproving a part-time job at McDonald's is the best they can hope for, I guess. It seems they want her spend her precious time proving it. Not.

Janet, good point. The MAGA people are mobilizing huge resources to try to catch Harris out in something or other. Can you imagine how many tens of millions they must be spending on investigators ("private eyes?")? Yet no one is spending any attention to highlight Trump's tens of thousands of lies. We don't even have to hire a private eye--his lies and flip-flops are out there in the glaring light of day. Yet not one interview question to him ever from anyone about "Why did you lie about this?" or "What are your views on abortion (he just flip-flopped--lied?--on that one again today). Psychologically, Trump is a master of dysregulation. In her book, Too Much-Never Enough, Mary Trump describes how Donald was positively validated for is sadism, bullying and wholesale absence of conscience.

As Trump now moves to a bigger canvas, his societal dysregulatory provocations trigger old familial wounds in many people, where aligning with the aggressor becomes a compelling alternative than experiencing re-victimization. In Trump's domination of media attention, his psychological assault shaped emotional reality in an otherwise social-psychological media vacuum.

Kamala Harris now provides a powerful regulatory balancing for our society, countering Trump's toxic infestation. People can find healthy refuge and safety in Kamala's strength, convictions and guidance. The hunger for rescue from Trump's dysregulation is now manifested in the meteoric shift in the polls and the hero's welcome the Harris/ Walz team is receiving. Harris brings to our nation a solution to the dysregulation and dysphoria. She is righting the ship of state and navigating with "true north" determination.

Ken C, you provided the best explanation I have ever heard for why 50% of American voters keep supporting Trump. "Aligning with the aggressor rather than experiencing re-victimization." They are people who identify as victims, and hanging onto Trump makes them feel safe because he is the bully and therefore he will protect them (he won't). Thank you.
