Allow me to share with you what it is like to live in Syracuse NY, where yesterday Air Force One delivered our President to our little Hancock Airport to speak with others about the transformation that will happen here that will improve many lives in the Central New York area. He was here with others to celebrate the $100 billion investment from Micron over the next two decades to build semiconductor manufacturing facility in the region. He is correct to describe it as a game-changer for our local economy. This is a clear sign that his policies are effective in boosting domestic manufacturing, and in the fact that DEMOCRATS DELIVER!!! This time is with the CHIPS Act.

He was introduced by Shawni Davis, a local Henninger High graduate and master electrician. This event did not occur at SU as many assumed, since the President had attended college there. The event took place at Onondaga Community College, where an education and training pipeline will be created to train students to become Micron engineers and technicians. This is just an astounding accomplishment, in a city known even recently as having one of the highest child poverty levels in the nation, according to new US census data.

Our Governor Hochul delivered details about the investments in education, child care, business and community groups that are coming along with Micron Technology investments.

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2022/10/hochul-reveals-new-details-about-where-how-much-micron-plans-to-invest-in-syracuse.html

I was busy with work and family issues yesterday and I am still getting caught up with the events and speakers at the event yesterday, but I did get to hear it live when Senator Schumer exclaimed "every single inch of this massive project will be built with UNION LABOR!"

I hope I can share some of my excitement with you. Things this big only happen in other places, not Upstate NY. I am pinching myself over and over, just wondering how this could be coming true for Syracuse. This is a city where children always grew up and had to leave the area to find a good job. That is no longer true. This area will be transformed into the future.

I'll say it again! DEMOCRATS DELIVER! Vote Blue in 2022 down the whole ballot!

Here is the video of the event with President Biden at Onondaga Community College on 10/27/22.

Lynn,

I am so happy for you and your fellow citizens in Syracuse! This is what democracy looks like: Our government (state & federal) working to bring investments and opportunities to Americans so they can improve their lives, and that of their children, through education, training and, sustainable, good-paying jobs. This will ensure the US remains strong, vibrant, and able to create our own destiny - one based on freedom and quality of life for all. 💙

This should have been a front page story in every major paper in the country!!! Thanks so much for letting us see this through your eyes. I'm assuming since it's in the newsletter that you would be ok with sharing it but I just wanted to check. I already share Robert's newsletter, but I would like to make a pdf of this comment and share it separately if that's ok with you. Blessings,

Chaplain Terry Ithink you have, as you often do, pointed to the heart of the matter when you say that this beautiful thrilling account of a US President walking among his people to tell them the good news that's on the way, should have been front page newsI have to confess, not for the first time, that nothing frightens me more than this: with very few exceptions the press is in lock-step in completely ignoring major speeches by the President of the United States

Expand full comment

Thank you, Dear Robertson! I find it frightening and maddening. So here is where I call on the energy of Robert Hubbell: realistic optimism + action. Once we get a true majority in congress and they see the tide turning, they'll have to wake up to what folks really need to know....and if not, we'll find other messengers.

I just realized I called you Dear instead of Dean - must have been a freudian slip!

Expand full comment

Yes, Dean. As I mentioned, the last 48 hours have been harried for me, so I haven't looked at many sources. The only national news I saw on this was a "hot mic" report where Senator Schumer spoke with the President as he deplaned AF1 in Syracuse and told Biden he was concerned about how tight the senate race is in Ga. The report was of course on the election, not at all about the huge event that took place in Syracuse yesterday.

The horror to me is that it's happening at all. It's a big reason that I cancelled my NYTImes subscription. I just couldn't stand it . I keep up with what's happening in the country and the world. I just consider it the deal of being an informed citizen. But there are things I find too much. I stopped watching tv new (and then tv altogether) when the serious Obama-bashing started back in 2012. And do you remember when whoever it was stood up in the middle of one of Obama's talks and screamed out that he was a liar. There's been a shattering of something--maybe some profound depth or sense of civility by which we swim past our worst demons and treat each other moderately well--just because that's what you do. I don't think that's in place right now and it kind of has tilted the landscape. Sorry. I have a friend dying in Kentucky and I'm a little off-plumb myself tonight

I am so sorry about your friend, Dean Robertson. May they soon be at peace, and may their loved ones and friends be blessed with comfort during this tender time.

Thank you so much. What a lovely thought to wake up to. Unlike your Chaplain, "Dean" isn't a title. It's my first name, although after over 7 years with a lovely grandson, I hardly answer to anything other than GranDean anymore.

Again, thank you for the good wishes for peace and comfort. This is man who was a colleague in the first independent secondary school post I ever had after fleeing the publish-or perish world of university. He is a good friend and he really taught me how to teach.

I am so sorry to hear of your friend Dean. Your friend has certainly had great fortune on this earth, to have you as a friend.

It is indeed quite disheartening to see the lack of civility we have here in this country. And what's with all this antisemitism????? I don't get it! Why are those of Jewish faith such targets? The only explanation I can see is that the anti-semites just follow along because of the fomenting done by other racists.

As Joyce Vance always ends her blog, (Aptly entitled "Civil Discourse")

"We're in this together".

The good economic news wasn't just growth. There was good news on the inflation front, too. The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 4.6 percent in the third quarter, compared with an increase of 8.5 percent in the second quarter. The Personal Consumption Expenditure price index, which the Fed watches, increased 4.2 percent, compared with an increase of 7.3 percent. And the CPI for the last three months rose a total of 0.5%, or an annual rate of 2% if it keeps up for the next nine months. That's the Fed's target. All great trends, a combination of interest rate hikes and a big slowdown in money supply growth from what had been hypergrowth, a big reason for inflation (thank you, Fed).

All good but many voters just don’t get this or care. They measure inflation only by what things cost. They never ask what the Republicans silver bullet solution is.

Alas, good point. Emotions rather than facts rule. Dems need to address how people feel. I hope ubiquitous gas price signs showing dropping prices will help.

Thank you, Stan, for this positive news. These are the data points that the media should be headlining! Unfortunately, our educational system is so underfunded and poor, that a large number of Americans wouldn't understand the link between these data points and their wallets. They will need to see that their paychecks increase or taxes decrease enough to offset the higher prices they are paying and feel like they can spend again.

When the dust has settled after Nov 8, we need to take on “main stream” (what a joke) media - big time.

I view the NYTIMES the same as Fox news in terms of the damage they are doing, albeit a bit more subtly.

Vox is one of my "go to sources," especially on legal matters. Ian Millhiser is superb, but others are very good as well. Slate is also good with Dahlia Lithwick and Mark Joseph Stern, but after those two, it is a very steep and seedy fall-off.

Absolutely. I cancelled my 30 year subscription to the NYT in Oct 2020 bc I had enough of their clickbait, both-sides coverage. And while I subscribe to several other papers, the MSM’s coverage of Biden and this election have been so biased. The front page headlines and the tweets of many of their headliner journalists seem to be rooting for recession, a red wave and Republicans. It almost feels devious in its dishonesty.

I’m an optimist and I am proud of that. The media certainly is not helping the Democrats but what everyone is missing are the little things that are happening everyday. Over 3000 people attended a rally for Fetterman in Pittsburgh last night. It had a rock concert vibe. In NC , Ga, Pa, and other locations mail in votes are ahead of the 2020 election results at the same time. Young voters are coming out to vote but there is still room for improvement. The election is in the hands of Independents, real Republican and women. They vote we win. I heard on NPR yesterday an interviewer ask a voter why they were independent. The answer was “ I use to be a Republican and that is not my party anymore “. What’s important is these Independents are not going to vote for Republicans and all we have to do is convince them to vote for Democracy.

Thank you Stephen. So true. I’ve spent much of the week textbanking in Harris County Texas to Dems and in the last 2 elections of doing a lot of GOTV work, I’ve never had such an enthusiastic response to voting. Same among Black voters I textbanked in NC. Anecdotal, but it was a joy to see.

How sad that even Meghan, of all the people, can’t look past the collateral damage from a stroke and know that the person and is still there- brain and all.

Republicans were gleeful with the media’s focus on Fetterman’s disability to the exclusion of Oz’s career-ending gaffes during the debate. Indeed, Republicans decided to amplify the media’s focus on Fetterman’s disability. Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, mocked both Fetterman and Biden (a stutterer) by saying that, together, they couldn’t couldn’t “get a full sentence out.”

Hey "Moonface" Ronna ROMNEY McDaniel - you need to spend a little less time sneaking the 5 gallon ice cream container out of the freezer at night. You're starting to take after Baron Harkonnen.

Do you like that, you dumbassed moron?

Expand full comment

To other readers: TCinLA makes a serious point that I hope is not overlooked or misconstrued in his biting commentary. Attacking female politicians for their physical appearance has FINALLY become unacceptable. And yet, McDaniel believes that it is still acceptable to attack others because of their disabilities. The only surviving pockets of discrimination that remain tolerated (most especially in the GOP) is discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and physical disability. Being an antisemite is now a ground for lionization among the "mean girls club" that the GOP has become.

I will stop now, and TCinLA, I will not make it a habit of speaking for you. But this issue has a personal dimension for my family and I am beyond sickened by the attacks on Fetterman. As usual, you have found a way to make a point in a way that few others can or would. Thanks.

I also wanted to see how many people would have to look up the Baron. He's pretty well known in some circles. The newest movie really nailed him. :-)

Ha! I had to look up Harkonnen and love the caps. Nevertheless, Romney McDaniel's full sentences are vile as are the media's sentences ignoring Oz's nauseating bs. I'd much rather hear the sentences of someone publicly and unabashedly recovering from a life-threatening stroke or some one publicly and unabashedly working with a stutter - understanding that their sentences and actions are in the best interests of the country.

Robert, Kudos to you on this day's edition! Robert Reich's article is superb and deserves an entire Edition dedicated to it and its key messages! We do not have a "free market" economy - just the opposite. One thing he hasn't mentioned yet (It's a 2 part article.) is the farm crisis with big corporations taking away and starving the individual farmers ability to earn a decent living. We also need to revise our notion that we still have a "free press" now that even the NY Times has succumbed to "Corporations United". It hit me hard that the Nazis started its purifying killings with children with disabilities. Where is character, ethics and values gone? Where are leaders like Teddy Roosevelt ready to bust up the cruelty of monopolies? Where are the George Washingtons who can't tell a lie. Where is longer term view preparing us for the technology revolution that is upon us and the climate conflagration that is here today? I have voted. I kept my vow to hold the entire Republican Party accountable by not voting for any R. We need the People United. We, the People, all of us this time united and with the wisdom of seven generations looking forward to creating a world of well-being for all!

This is a great article written and published by Robert Reich on his Substack site:

https://robertreich.substack.com/p/the-truth-about-corporate-power?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

He does a great job illustrating how the vast economic and political inequality we have in this country is not due to the workings of the "free market", which is touted by the financial elite via corporate owned media. Rather, the economic and political playing fields have been deliberately tipped so overwhelmingly in favor of the financial elite by conservative governmental policies and court rulings. Of course, this all started in earnest beginning with the Reagan Admin in the 1980s. This is the first of a two-part series of articles.

As opposed to the ability to fix complex problems through education and language. All ideologies are not real life. Religious frameworks are morality disguised as fact.

While there is good news out there the media seems to amplify the negative of [Ras]Putin, Kanye West, and the right wing.

The media is amplifying anti-Semitism by constantly repeating Kanye's bigotry. It's like a political ad.

Personally, I have made the decision to withdraw from a group that supports veterans. Why? Because the CEO of this particular organization has posted on Facebook that he thinks Kanye is being treated badly and someone posted supporting this guy's post.

Yesterday was the dark anniversary of the shootings of the synagogue in Pittsburgh. If words don't lead to action the advertising business would go broke.

Thank you for letting me express my feelings.
