Woohoo—the Santa Ana winds in L.A. were down today; hoping they dissipate but not sure for later tonight, so stay safe!
Great news from the SCOTUS re: the lio & cheato and his mueling and pueling about his 34 felony convictions. Friday may turn into a great example for anyone who feels the law is weak in the USA.
Thank you for “consider an exit strategy” re Facebook and related social media. They need to lose subscriptions in the way WaPo lost subscriptions. Money talks
Thank you for your superb reporting in this difficult time. There was some good news today in Pres. Sheinbaum’s clever educational response to trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
This kind of response totally undercut’s trump’s foolishness and also brings attention to our terrible flood of guns into Mexico. Three cheers for Pres. Sheinbaum!
I have unsubscribed from Facebook and will not be able to elevate your essays as I had been doing for many months. Perhaps someone else wants to do some of that for a while.
I'm so glad to read that you & Jill are safe! 2 of my dear friends in Pasadena have evacuated, and are staying with relatives. Very scary times indeed, and heart breaking. Hoping all you others in SoCal are also safe!!
Meanwhile, I keep wondering how much further into lunacy tffg can sink. Then I realize I don't want to know. It's frightening indeed.
Thank you for your concluding thoughts. They brought me to tears of appreciation. We can be stalwart and strong in this storm of lunacy and hate rhetoric. It is our obligation to the future generations. As an upcoming 79 year old (next week), I am determined to take any and every action that will support the foundation of our Democracy and the hope it promises to young people.
FYI: looks to me like another prospective capitulation: I received this from the Forest Service:
Thank you for your ongoing interest in the National Old Growth Amendment. On December 20, 2023, the Forest Service published a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement for consistent land management plan direction for old-growth forest conditions across the National Forest System. On June 21, 2024, the Forest Service published the notice of availability of the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS). During the 90-day comment period that followed the publication of the DEIS, the Agency hosted virtual engagements, information sessions and regional field meetings across the country. Over 300,000 comments were received and analyzed.
Through a forthcoming Federal Register notice, the Agency has decided to withdraw the notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement and will not be publishing a final environmental impact statement.
So glad you and your wife are safe, watching the news on the LA fires and its devastating. I have a friend in Altadena, who is thankfully safe.
But on another point - the chaos. Trump is a master of using chaos as a distraction, and we can't let his grandstanding and threats distract from real issue - we also need to make sure that we are focusing on the real immanent threats. For example, sending Don Jr. to Greenland and everyone is up in arms - yes, we should be maybe worried, but we still should be focused on the real issue right in front of us - his nominations to the his cabinet. Those discussions have now been bumped from the front page, and we need to be discussing RFK Jr, Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth and how they must not get confirmed. His headlining grabbing distracts from the real issues.
“We are in the right, no matter how often people tell us to “give Trump a chance” or that “Democrats are at fault” for losing the election.”
Come on, Robert! Be honest: no person of sound mind or good character is saying such things: stop trying to rally us against the absolutely nonexistent group you describe…it’s a fantasy.
It is horrifying to view the scenes from California. But in addition to all the other comments made today by DT, am I the only one who recalls that on the campaign trail DT made the statement that California would not receive any relief money from his administration? I believe everything that he threatens. G. Aitken
Thinking of Robert, Jill, their family, Jessica Craven, and everyone in LA. The devastation documented in photos and videos is heartbreaking. I just read about Trump's call to Alito within hours of his lawyers filing their appeal to the Supreme Court. I read some explanation like he was calling about a job applicant. I'm sorry. That does not pass the smell test.

Thx Robert for a great piece!
Thank you SO MUCH for the continuous beacon of light.

Turns out we were originally Mexican America long before we became the USA, and she had maps to prove it. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/poking-fun-at-trump-mexicos-president-suggests-renaming-the-u-s/

Thank you for continuing to write day in and day out, bringing us facts and exposing the lies and insanity.

Please take care all in the LA area. Know hearts are with from all across the US.
