I’ve signed up on Oath, which helps prioritize donating. With STOP, I am receiving fewer begs. On my email, I have a filter for the words donate, and give. Those posts go to the delete file or I manually filter and delete.

Are ICE agents identifying and arresting illegal immigrants in red states? I live in Oklahoma and haven’t seen any news reports that ICE is vigorously rounding up immigrants here like they are in blue states.

I did write to ActBlue once after the umpteenth "new" begging text/email. I accused them of splattering my donations to the world, and to please stop. The response was, "We do not give out this information. It may be another PAC or other Committee, but it is not ActBlue." Not sure if that's true - but I do believe our Colorado/Pueblo County sells lists of voters. I am registered as Unafffiliated, so maybe I'm targeted more than others. But thank you so much for keeping positive and sending out the good vibes!

I just read the most recent post from Bill McKibben from the Crucial Years (on Substack also) and here was a really well-said blurb at the end. So far, it's the warmest, most sincere-sounding entreaty for funds I've encountered: "These are hard times, and if you can’t afford the voluntary and modest subscription fee for this newsletter than don’t worry about it for a moment. If you can, then thank you for helping keep this community going!"

I really like Roberts suggestions for changing the algorithm, i.e choosing campaigns that start with a low donation, unsubscribing from others. I've also sent notes telling various campaigns that I will NEVER donate to a campaign that has the default of "monthly donation"! While unsubscribing generally works beware of campaigns that need you to identify your e-mail address - It just puts you on another list! As per a suggestion from a few days ago I'm going to investigate: oath.vote

I'd like to add that supporting Movement Voter Project (website is movement.vote) is a terrific way to support grassroots groups who work year-round to build progressive change. Super-impactful, doing deep relational organizing. If you don't know about them, they are....amazing. Ask me if you want more info also, I'm a volunteer.

I donate two organizations recommended by bridging the gap. BTG does research to find out what small local grassroots organizations would have an outsized impact on critical races. Their donor lists are never shared with anyone. They played a major role in swinging a number of House seats to the Democrats in this past election. I mostly ignore other requests but will also donate to the key Senate seats and presidential elections. I always reply with stop to any request and do not bother reading them. I want to pick who I donate to.

I can understand giving fatigue. I am pleased to say I have received 2 emails recently from the DNC with "assignments," )e.g. things each of us can do) and linking to their toolkit. They DID NOT ask for money! I wrote them a note of thanks!

Thank you so very much Robert Hubbell and to the many who made worthwhile comments/suggestions below.

The “New” DNC is becoming aware of donor fatigue. I donate currently only to the party because I believe in the mission of supporting a 50 state strategy and not just being active around elections. They are trying to be an everyday party. Do you know that 40 out of 50 state party chairman are unpaid volunteers! Yeesh. Believe it or not the party has a process now where you can get a half hour scheduled meeting on the phone with an agenda that you provide. You are speaking to a party Development Manager. I have a scheduled call in 3 days with a lengthy agenda. I will report back and inform as to process and how it went

In 2016 I had a very good financial year and was very concerned about the direction the country was headed, particularly with the possibility of Trump getting elected. As a result I gave to democratic candidates and causes like never before, several times maxing out the amount I could give to my local candidates. BIG MISTAKE!

Not only did none of that investment come to any fruition, it began an unending flood of requests from democratic candidates and causes from all over the country that continues to this day Texting STOP to text requests and unsubscribing from the emails I receive seems to have slowed the onslaught somewhat but not enough. This led me several years ago to vow that I will never donate to one of these requests again.

I vote and do go out to protest.

I mean, I agree that the momentum is there, but we can’t donate (or choose not to donate) our way out of candidates who can’t translate that momentum into a successful campaign. It’s not enough to ride a blue wave of resistance if we also don’t spend the time to think deliberately about whether it’ll be enough to knock down the red bulwarks built up over the last few decades. Everyone is mad, but everyone is also still super worried about paying their mortgage and buying groceries. If dems can’t get a policy slate to address that, the blue wave will crash hard and dissipate into the sea. As requested, here’s a positive call to action: get involved in the sausage making of political campaigns you believe I ! Whether that’s direct outreach with viable candidates, volunteering time and capacity to further potential campaigns, or even running yourself! The political process shouldn’t be reserved for institutional ëlites. It can, and should, be by and for everyone!

Thank you for addressing the absolute barrage of daily texts requesting money. As regular, careful, donors, we expect some solicitation but this has gone way past the point of acceptable and ventured into the ridiculous. I think I type "stop" over a dozen times a day. The party is hurting itself as we have now stopped all donations and will invest our time and energy but not our dollars, since every donation generates a request for ten more.

Don’t forget Seniors Taking Action, a great group that has a weekly newsletter, a weekly zoom call featuring inspiring people like you, and postcarding information.

THaNK you for discussing this. I often wonder at the extent of damage done by the barrage of texts… not just the number but the insincerity, sensationalism, unprofessionalism, and often downright juvenility of their content. I donated in a variety of swing states, but I think I’d have done

more if fear of spending any more time deleting texts wasn’t a factor.
