Daily Dose of Perspective
Tonight’s image: M110, a small elliptical galaxy that lies roughly 2.69 million light-years away. The light captured in the above image left the M110 when the earliest stone tools were being chipped in East Africa. It is a modest galaxy by the standards of its neighborhood — about 17,000 light-years across, less than a fifth the width of the Milky Way — and yet it holds an estimated ten billion stars.

More than 200 people attended our rally today, August 1, 2026, in Mt Kisco, NY, and at the end of the rally, we heard from the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 17th Congressional District, Cait Conley.

A quiet protest. While looking through my stash of needlepoint canvases that I use to make Christmas ornaments, I across this one for D.C. However I took the liberty of changing the color of the Reflecting Pool to a putrid green and added blue pieces of plastic. I smiled the entire time I worked on it. When it is finished the border will be cords of green and blue and will be on the Christmas tree every year.

August 1, 2026. I missed today’s Protest so…I’m sending a few posts from the past year to remind myself and others why we do this every week.

“Rush Hour Resistance” group in East Lansing, MI. on Wednesday, July 29th. We are out every Wednesday, barring extreme weather. It was great to be outdoors in beautiful weather and be among spirited people. We got lots of honks and waves for both of our signs — even many from semi-truck and other work-vehicle drivers.

The first picture is of our friend, 87 years young, and my nephew and brother visiting from Alaska! I always smile and wave to passing cars, which gets a positive response 95% of the time. My brother was happy to see how active we are and how much our efforts change things in Maine. We just had 3 new laws enacted this Wednesday that limit the scope of ICE’s ability to operate in our state!

We had guests at the Chattanooga Bridge Brigade this week! Members of the 1000 Mile March to Memphis came to Chattanooga on July 30, and before moving on, helped us with our protest. Substack contributors Robert Arnold and AngryMaleVet were among those who joined us, pushing to get out the vote for Tennessee on Thursday, August 6. It was a beautiful morning, and a great reception from the citizens driving by!

From now to November (and after) there is one overriding issue: Not affordability or aid to Israel, but the simple fact that Donald Trump is a demented lunatic whose presence in the presidency endangers the nation every hour hr remains in office.
Your daily column is one I never miss. You have the right and proper mix of encouragement and warning to keep us engaged and concerned while not driving us to excess alarm or despair. I happily recommend your column to others on a frequent basis. Keep up the outstanding work!
