We are regularly told “polls aren’t elections.” And yet we get the following:
“Six months out from November’s midterm US elections, Donald Trump’s disapproval rating has reached 62% – the worst of his two terms in office – according to a new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll.
The US president received his worst ratings on the cost of living and other economic issues since launching his deeply unpopular war against Iran in February, which has plunged the global economy into an oil crisis and sent gas prices rocketing to a four-year high.”
Concurrently we must focus on the following as we “Get Out The Vote” in every election from now on - up and down the ballot.
“The poll also found opposition for specific presidential actions, including Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship, cuts to federal funding for medical research, increases to defense spending, and his administration’s efforts to end temporary legal status for migrants from war-torn countries.
In addition, about seven in 10 Americans said Trump isn’t honest and trustworthy, while about six in 10 said he doesn’t have the mental sharpness to serve as president.”
When are the rest of the Trumpstein files going to be released so we know the names of the abusers? This needs to happen NOW so none of them are being primaried or elected.
My household is confused now about the timing of voting in the California election for June which includes the governor's race. You have counseled that we wait for the list of contenders to narrow as May goes on, but the state advises early voting (and we vote by mail). Can you counsel on the timing for us please?
Following Robert’s recent mention of Ty Pinkins, I well remember being moved by Robert’s introduction to us of Ty Pinkins in the spring of ’24 when he and Jill met him on their sojourn down the Mississippi. I wanted to learn more and do more on Ty’s behalf, so I began (virtually) attending meetings with Ty’s team, writing postcards on his behalf, and (modestly) contributed to his campaign.
I continue to be impressed by Ty, now in his role as an independent candidate for U.S. Senate.
I have four one-month gift subscriptions to ‘Ty’s Substack,’ that I’d like to share with readers of ‘Today’s Edition Newsletter.' Here’s one of Ty’s essays published on the evening of the Callais decision:
“After the Storm, Democracy Still Needs Tending: A setback for voting rights. A warning for Mississippi. A call to action for all of us”
Ty writes, “[I]n a democracy, the people matter most. This is why I am running for the United States Senate as an Independent Veteran: because democracy should belong to the people, not the parties, not the politicians, and not the powerful few who benefit when voters are divided, diluted, or ignored.”
And another of Ty’s essays published on March 29, 2026:
“The Return of an Old Joy: How finishing A Revolutionary Friendship reminded me of a joy I had missed for far too long”
A rather beautifully written rendering of reading a good book, the rigors of law school, and of the quiet, he writes:
“Over the past year, though, I have found my way back, and that return has meant more to me than I expected.
“I have again found and embraced my joy of reading for pleasure. And this morning, sitting on my back patio, I realized just how much that return means to me.
“There is something powerful about rediscovering a part of yourself you thought had been buried beneath duty and time. Not everything lost is gone for good. Some things wait patiently for us to return to them.”

It seems we have forgotten about ICE, now that Trump isn't sending them en masse to large cities. We also don't have Noem out there being the controversial face of ICE. But I want to know what they are doing. And what about the detention centers? What is happening to those people? Especially people that are legal citizens or have been here for decades and have not committed any crimes. Have these people been forgotten? I know ICE is still being heavily funded through the BBB, even though Mike Johnson wants you to believe the government shutdown is hindering them. My own research hasn't found much..Robert, do you have any incite?
Jeanne, a few things. There is a new campaign to stall the new warehouse camps and continue to push for closure of the existing ones. You can search for Communities Not Cages, Free Them All, and Í think Defiance.org. We did a day of action around the country on April 25 to kick it off. All support is useful.
Indivisible chapters also continue to call for boycotts of enablers of the companies building and open Citizens Bank and Vanguard are good targets. In Congress they continue break all the rules to give ICE another $90 billion, because apparently ICE ran through all their BBB funding by the end of April, which like everything else, is obscene.
We are seeing a surge of sorts in Virginia right now. A lot of ICE kidnappings, propaganda, and rhetoric. I do not know if it will get violent here. But it is heartbreaking, we have a lot of Central Americans here, going back to Salvador’s FMLN war, and if the bulk of them are stripped of their legal status by SCOTUS, it is going to be very bad.
Finally, on Mondays at 9pm, Rachel Maddow usually has a lot to say about the camps and the inhumanity.
This is the real story behind Hitler, the assassination of JFK and what you probably believed was true is not at all what happened and how it relates to what is happening today. It is three hours but extremely well done by historians and captivating from beginning to end. Watch and share.
We read you every day, Robert, but honestly I come for the pictures (halfway kidding). I love seeing our big beautiful country (and world) represented in them all. They give me great hope that there are more of us than them.
Yesterday, on our drive home from a day spent at the baseball field watching our granddaughter and her team take the championship, HUGE YEAH, they worked/ played so hard and went into playoffs in 4th place, we drove by our local Leisure World, where there were about 25 protesters with signs. We gave them a honk and a wave! Usually that's us, it felt weird to be in the car driving by, but we knew how supportive a wave and a honk can be.
If only Today’s Edition and all the great protest photos could be carried prominently by all the MSM so that EVERYONE EVERYWHERE would wake up and join us, your readers!!!!!!!!!
Robert, thank you for addressing our California governor’s primary race during your livestream yesterday. I want to point out that CNN is hosting a candidates’ debate this coming Tuesday evening, May 5. I plan to watch it and then closely follow the result of likely voter polling afterwards. Hopefully the top Democratic contender will emerge after this debate.
Here are details:
CNN will host a California gubernatorial primary debate in May, a potential inflection point in a crowded campaign that Democrats are concerned could provide an opening for Republicans.
The two-hour debate will be held May 5 at 6 p.m. Pacific time (9 p.m. Eastern time), just under a month before the June 2 primary. CNN anchors Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins will moderate the event, which will take place in the Los Angeles area.
To qualify for the debate, eligible candidates must have received at least 3% support among likely primary voters in two California gubernatorial polls or an average of 3% support in two California gubernatorial polls conducted by polling organizations whose methodology meets CNN’s standards for reporting.
The public release of polls that meet CNN’s editorial standards to determine eligibility in this debate must be released between February 1 and April 27. In addition, qualifying candidates must have raised, contributed, or loaned at least $1 million for this specific gubernatorial campaign.
I will be able to watch if it's streamed, but that could be a LOT of candidates. I'm wondering how useful it will be. Also maybe I can mute bianco when he's accusing all of us of lying all of the time.
Omg, sister. Agree! I formerly lived in Riverside County and can attest that “Sheriff” Bianco is whacko. Will be muting both him and Dump-endorsed Hilton. I am not crazy about the “top” 3 Dems - Becerra, Steyer and Porter. It will be interesting to see who leads after this second debate (which I assume will stream on CNN).
After the first debate on April 28, polling changed as follows: Javier Becerra 24%, Steve Hilton 23%, Tom Steyer 15%, Chad Bianco 13%, Katie Porter 10%, and Matt Mahan (backed by Peter Thiel), 6%. The remaining two Dems, Antonio Villaraigosa and Tony Thurmond, each hold 2% or less and will not be included in the debate.
It’s gonna be a fiasco. Either way, I’ll be holding my nose when it’s time to cast my primary vote. 😤
someone smarter than me wrote that becerra having been in the biden admin has been thoroughly vetted--and after swallwell this is a big plus... and he has experience running big govnmt events...but i am following robert's advice--wait til last few days and see who is ahead so we can get a dem in this crucial role...
Sigh. My “dream candidate” would have been Kamala Harris or AG Rob Bonta, but both declined to run. I was ready to vote for Eric Swalwell before his scandal broke. Now I will take Robert Hubbell’s advice and vote for whichever Dem is leading in, say, 2 weeks. I usually vote early (by mail) but this time will hold off a bit.

Love all the pics! Dedication and some really great signs.
Wow - some really great signs! Even more than usual. I love that the Grand Lake Theater closed on 5/1, too.
