I found tonight's commentary by Lawrence O'Donnell about all this to be thought-provoking. I'm pretty sure he knows more about how the Senate works than all of us here combined, so his words have weight and I think they have to be considered. He presented an argument that the five of the eight senators who had not previously voted to open the government were able to extract more than we think at this point, because they forced all the Republicans - including Trump - to change their positions to those expressed by these five, in order to get the vote to open the government. Like I say, I find his points thought-provoking, since I at first disagreed with him quite strongly. If you didn't see his show, I suggest you catch a rerun somewhere. Particularly before running off half-cocked shouting "Ready! fire! aim!"

At moments like this, I am fortunate to have the experience and example of the three Cleaver brothers - my 6th great grandfather Isaac and his younger brothers, James and Ezekiel - who served in the Revolution from Bunker Hill to Yorktown; they had far more disappointments and failures to deal with than victories, and had they and those with whom they served not dealt with those disappointments and kept on with the fight, none of us would have grown up in the country we have. Tossing in the towel and saying "I've had enough and I can't take any more" is a disservice and a disgrace to all those ancestors on whose shoulders we stand.

I'm also aware of the stories of the people in my books - particularly at this time those in "I Will Run Wild," the chronicle of the first six months of our involvement in World War II, which provided disappointment and defeat on top of more disappointment and defeat, yet resulted in the Battle of Midway, where the disappointment and defeat were turned into a victory that changed everything. I remember asking one of the heroes of that time how they kept things together so they could achieve what they did. His reply was "The alternative was unthinkable." We should adopt that attitude.

Sorry, there's no Big Daddy anything to come along and make the necessary changes for us. If it's to happen that the country is saved, it will be saved the way it was in the two cited examples: by US.

There's a tricky balance. On the one hand, Dems could get wrapped up in a long internecine battle which the media will lap up and cover endlessly, allowing the Trump outrages to go even more unreported than usual. See, for example, the most recent round of horrifying pardons. But I also think that the best move for the Democratic party would be the swift political decapitation of both Schumer and Durbin, replacing them with younger, steelier Senators and a rapid pivot to focusing on calls to release the Epstein files, now that the House will be coming back in session. Of course other things are more important, but it's a story the media would have to run with.
