As a sidenote to my below post, what is happening in our country is hard to believe. It is hard to fathom how people can believe the propaganda and lies being told: by the media, by the President, by our government and business leaders.
In giving the benefit of the doubt, social media with all its ability to connect, has created more isolation. By the speed of news and constant bombardment, it is hard to absorb and contemplate; rather we react. We respond impulsively. Then retract due to overwhelm.
It has affected our youth and their ability to process, to create a sound reality; a wholesome lens to create life and relationships. Seniors get passed by as IT makes it more difficult to connect as well as conduct life.
It is a savings grace to connect with Robert on Saturday morning, to connect with Heather Cox Richardson daily via YouTube, to connect with other substack authors via their sites. Equally so, my meditation practice grounds me into my own rhythm where others’ chaos more easily rolls off my back.
Listening to Rosie O’ Donnell tonite, it is time to create community, to create neighborhood relationships where trust, familiarity and connection is fostered. We owe it to our country to stand up for our ideals and re-create our country, the way
Our Founding Fathers did. To create strong state governments, where governments served their peoples; then creating a federal government to stand together for support, fir sustainability, to protect from foreign invaders was discovered as necessary
Looking for the silver lining, on our 250th anniversary, we as the People commit and recommit to our experiment of a gov’t
“fir the people, by the people”.
We have the opportunity to really examine who we are, envision what we want and who we are as a people, and then act.
With clarity, integrity and virtue, that clear vision flow will manifest.
Now is the time to roll up our sleeves aNd get to work. To imagine a re-invented US gov’t inclusive of all its citizens, supporting its citizens thru strong education, civil rights and affordable healthcare fir all, policies supporting a strong environment, as well a dependable and ethical member of the global community supporting democratic values.
Robert, this morning was one of the few times that I watch on Saturday as usually that is a very busy day here. Again, may I thank you for your tough and resilient Optimism in the face of the evil that this nation faces. It is a very tough time for us as the newest member of our family, our son-in-law for just a couple months, is a crewman on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Yes he signed up to DEFEND our country but not to participate in a blitzkrieg. You, Robert, have been a big help to us here and we are grateful. Thanks.
Robert, your daily post as well as other fine substacks are the savings grace to our US Democracy. Heather Cox Richardson, you, Scott Dworkin, Professor Reich
And others are the guiding stars to my proactive citizenry. For our Nation as well. So thank you so much.
It is so hard to know who to believe, the endless media noise is so loud and reactive. To be able to Filter out the distortions, to hold a steadying context to this daily barrage of news is such a gift: your daily posts and Saturday zoom contribute to this stabilizing and calming effect. Your words are truly valuable.
Again, thank you so much for the steadying light during such turbulent times.
I'm still getting my head around Iran. But I'd like to comment on two points you allude to here and on your livestream (I rarely watch videos so I don't know whether comments are always blocked on your recording of it)
1. People need to remember that trump can sign all the EOs he wants to, nasty as he wants to, including "stopping the election." States don't have to pay any attention. Blue States can just go ahead as usual, holding their elections, using mail in ballots, counting votes however they want to. If red states choose to "obey in advance" we will simply end up with a really lopsided Congress till the courts straighten things out: there is NOTHING that allows those whose terms have expired to keep sitting in Congress. Mikie won't be in charge, and possibly not even still in Congress.
PS. If he "stops the mail" I don't see any reason why the election boards can't certify volunteers to come pick up ballots to take to drop boxes for those not able to get to them. There appears to be no "anti-stuffing" law here in WA, just "only give your ballot to someone you trust to deposit." In other states WITH "drop box" rules, the volunteers could to straight to whoever tabulates the ballots in the precinct or county.
2. At least one source has pointed out that the Anthropic contract was not issued under FAR, but was an "OTA" contract, frequently used by the Pentagon. That means that more usual breach of contract rules apply. One of those rules is the result of a "bad faith" termination, even if the the contract contains a "termination for convenience" clause. And evidence for such bad faith includes threatening to blacklist the contractor if they refuse to alter the original terms of the contract, which is what this dispute is all about; Hegseth wanted to ADD the use of the AI for surveillance of citizens and automated drone activity; it wasn't (per my source) in the original contract.
Needless to say, the threat has now materialized and affects ALL of Anthropic's contracts, PLUS contracts of anyone who deals on their own with Anthropic. It is harder to think of a better act to show retribution.
If Anthropic can show this, they'd be entitled to "benefit of the bargain" damages--the whole amount they would have been paid had the contract reached its expected end. And, because of the bad faith, possibly attorney fees.
Don't know if my source of information is true as to the nature of the contract or what was in the original. But if true, Hegseth might soon find that of all his extra funding that he got and can't figure out what to do with may go to paying Anthropic a whole lot of money. And we will have yet another example of Waste, Fraud, and Abuse by this regime.
Many people read this comment section. I am asking that everyone who reads this send an email to Senate Majority Leader John Thune to ask him to intervene in this current situation. I wrote to him today in his role as Senate Majority Leader and reminded him that Congress alone has the right to declare war. I further reminded him that he represents all Americans and we expect him to intervene in the current unconstitutional situation to take a stand. I know most of us have little faith that we can have an impact on any Republican lawmaker but at this point we must do whatever we possibly can to try and rein in the unfettered tyrant in the White House.
Trump has now started an unconstitutional war, one that endangers all. What to do? While I respect the views of those who believe that Trump can be stopped by the Constitution, by our laws, by the voters at upcoming elections, and by the courts, I can’t agree. In my view, such views are akin to those expressed in the 1930’s by those who opposed Hitler—they are unrealistic; they reflect wishful thinking. Isn’t it obvious that the Trump and opposition sides are playing under completely different rules in different universes, one group asserting that the law, rules and norms will continue to apply and the other operating in defiance of them. Don’t we need to get a grip and confront reality? The law is an annoyance and doesn't matter to Trump. He is doing and will continue to do what his narcissism and dementia dictate and he has expressly so stated. For how long will we continue to ignore reality and depend on principles that are now inapplicable, just as Hitler's opposition did way back then. When will we move off a strategy grounded in fantasy? Has the time come for a massive, nationwide, constant work and perhaps tax strike that endures until Trump is stopped? I wish and pray I'm wrong. But, am I?
Thank you TOG for your clarity, from an 85 OG. It does seem pretty unrealistic to counter the Trump tyranny by following laws, rules, and norms that he breaks or ignores all day, every day. There must be another answer. (State sanctioned regicide, perhaps.)
Other than engaging in massive, overwhelming, peaceful, sustained protests that disrupt, I have no clue or experience on how to combat lawlessness. What I do feel is that asserting "legal" solutions in response is meaningless, a waste of time. So someone way way smarter then me will have to figure out the next step.
Trump can be stopped by the Constitution. We use the word impeachment to describe that.
Start the process Monday, March 2, and by Friday. March 6. JD Vance could be sworn in and Trump can spend the weekend moving himself to Mara Logo and hiring a moving company.
But JD is a Republican!! That may not bring cheers from our side; but at least JD is sane and has reasonable leadership ability.
I'm no big fan of the republican side; but we've managed to keep our nation together for 250 years. This in spite of our inbred differences and the obvious two faces of our species..
I think JD would have his work cut out for him if he and his backers want to give him a shot at reelection to a full term in 2028. And the American people will have learned lessons they will not soon forget.
Yes, in the past, the Constitution would stop Trump in his tracks for starting a war without Congressional approval. But, this is not the past. Trump doesn't care about the Constitution and I'm concerned that, even if he were impeached, he would not leave office. Then what? I feel the same about the 2026 and 2028 elections. Knowing he will be prosecuted upon leaving office, I don't believe he will ever leave, the Constitution and laws notwithstanding. What then? This is the present and this is our present reality.
" if he were impeached, he would not leave office."
Office? What office? A room in an old building in Washington DC?
Is his "army", a gang of armed loyalists, going to go out and collect money or other objects of intrinsic value from the mass of people they can reach and plunder? That's the sort of things we see going on in the failed nations of Africa where people are governed by and support the local armed gang.
Maybe his ICE gang will stop collecting living bodies and just grab people's wallets at gun point. That might be an actual improvement over the status quo. At least until the people start shooting back.
I am livid to wake up this morning and see Trump has started a war with Iran. This is illegal and wrong. He’s the one who got us out of the Iran nuclear deal both terms. He is doing this to stop the midterms and Epstein files. And with the Ellison taking over Warner Brothers now we are basically living in Russia now. If Obama or Biden did even one of these things they would be hanged from a tree. Why does this asshole get away with murder. Why is he never punished for his crimes. Someone needs to step up and take him down now. Our country will never recover from the damage he has done in 1 year. He can’t have even 1 more year to destroy us. Let alone 3. I’m sad mad and feel hopeless. No kings day on March 28th needs to be big. Bigger than anything we’ve ever seen and he needs to be impeached. Now.
This notice today in the SALTBOX substack is truth no doubt that despite our pushback at the level of our GOVERNOR and Attorney General, ICE is convinced they can come to Maryland. And wreak their havoc here. We will need prayers and support here as these events come to our state. That location is only about an hour away by RTE 70 from where I live in ELKRIDGE and less than an hour and a half from Baltimore itself. And the same distance to BWI airport! It is about 1 and a quarter hours to DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Maryland has already suffered mightily with the loss of federal workers (the largest number in the United States) and no doubt the inherent racism of this administration will do more damage. As a footnote that part of our state that abuts West Virginia has expressed desires to join majority white West Virginia! And if the District of Columbia is not granted statehood, we would gladly welcome that part of our state we gave to form the District.
Here is the message I just send to Schumer, Jeffries and my Senators and Rep.:
Senator Schiff, I share below the message I just sent to Chuck Schumer:
As a concerned American citizen and a lifetime supporter of the Democratic Party, I contact you as the Democratic Leader in the Senate. I am outraged and angry about Trump's attack on Iran with no consultation with Congress, with no approval of Congress, with no long term consideration of the implications, and with no clear plan. This attack violates the Constitution and international law. I strongly urge you to call this out loudly and repeatedly, to point out that Trump is seeking to distract Americans from the Epstein files, from the horrendous actions of ICE and CBP, and from all of his horrible policies, and to demand that Congress vote immediately to stop this war. Your leadership is essential AND this terrible act is one more reason for Democrats to stand firm in NOT approving DHS funding until ALL of your very reasonable demands are met! Thank you.
Senator Schiff, please urge every Democratic member of Congress and Republicans too to call out Trump's illegal action and to pass a War Powers act that requires this operation to cease immediately!
You are right, Robert, that we need to seize the day, when enthusiasm for Trump's countless illegal acts (including today's entry into a Congressionally unsanctioned, all out war with Iran) is at an all time low. Working against Napoleon Bonespurs and his jingoistic, imperialist dreams of world domination are his demeaning comments about veterans and soldiers captured in combat. Today, as the US military bombarded Iranian cities, he was quoted as saying "The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost. That often happens in war." That statement should be followed by the still unacknowledged, shameful truth that THAT is why his father paid for him to be eliminated from the draft and never serve, during the VietNam War. What does this man know of courage, let alone heroism? Those that do should do everything within their power to bring his senseless reign of corruption and cruelty to an end. Perhaps those who can't be persuaded to act on principle will be persuaded to muster when gasoline reaches $7 per gallon and supermarket shelves are bare because of supply chain disruption.
Good morning, Robert and everyone, while I read the newsletter as I always do, I was not at all motivated to send in a comment this morning. I have been doing what is necessary but little else. But I did just watch your Saturday video and I am now very much wanting to write. I want to strongly endorse your advice not to give up because of this horrific war on Iran. I turned 84 recently and have been strongly anti-war all my life and this illegal and undeclared war on Iran is the worst worst thing ever!
On top of the horror I am experiencing and would be anyway, my late partner's grandson, who was recalled to service in June, has been getting training in warfare recently and will leave for Iran in the next couple of days. I'm very close to the family and was on the phone with his mother for over an hour this morning. But I am writing now, after listening to you, to say that I'm even more sure and I already was that I will not give up myself because that's the only choice that makes any sense. So thank you very much - again.

The GOP has truly become Guardians of Pedofiles and nothing even remotely resembling the Grand Old Party of yesteryear.
Feb 28, last day of a long month. Of Trump. A last day.
The Ides of March are ahead of us.
"Erstwhile". Look up the definition of the word. It will be useful in the times ahead.
Great piece on the Ellison media purchase. Enjoy!
