While the political significance of Tuesday’s results is the headline, the subheading should underscore their social significance.

Two women, Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger, were elected to the highest offices in states with a combined population exceeding 18 million.

Spanberger is the first woman elected to the job in Virginia. Sherrill is only the second female governor (and first female Democrat) to hold the post in New Jersey.

And Mamdani carries with him into the New York Mayor’s office a bundle of firsts that signals the electorate is ready and willing to effect even greater change.

A good night.

Thanks to everyone who organized, wrote, called, texted, phonebanked, canvassed, protested and talked to their friends, neighbors and families. Thank you, Robert, for keeping our vision focused and our spirits up! We do indeed have every reason to be hopeful!
