You asked about cross-border tourism. The southern Maine coast where I have a cottage normally has a sizable influx of Canadian guests in the summer. You would see many Canadian license plates at rental properties and hotels. This year they are few and far between. I may have seen only three all summer. Areas such as Old Orchard Beach to the northeast of me really felt the loss of that tourism. I can't blame the Canadians for not coming.
I have been very weary recently. Over the weekend I did not send my usual 30-40 emails a day to my Senators & Reps. I watched some silly movies. Then this morning I was just so defeated at the Kilmar Abrego Garcia situation. I made calls to my Senators and Reps demanding action from them. Langworthy’s office cut me off with a “Thank you and then hung up on me.” A small group of us protest with sign waving every Monday from 4-5pm. We are in an area with a large population of low education wood chucks who think Trump is their savior. Anyway, we have a bubble machine going and one of us play’s his Saxaphone. I still went to day. Definitely helped when we got many more honks thanks usual and only 1 angry MAGAt yelling as he drove by and one middle finger. I just sent Langworthy about 40 emails. Substack writers like your self help shore me up. Mahalo!

I ran across this yesterday and found it helpful in thinking how to pace myself in this moment. Right now I’m off to stand in solidarity with an 86-year-old woman who has been sitting alone with a Stop Trump sign in front of her nursing home almost daily. We’re calling it Mondays with Margery!
Specifically, the reason package delivery is now being suspended to the United States this week is the US requirement that the sending party (the company you bought something from) must collect and pay the tariff. This despite the fact that what the tariff is exactly, in various countries, is unknown.
The Minimum Basic Tariff that would be charged on a package you ordered that would have been covered by the DeMinimums policy of no tariffs on packages less than $800 in value will be as much as $100, regardless of the value of the merchandise inside. You can see how this cannot be done by the companies.
You can figure that all those nice little gift shops you shopped online with during previous holiday seasons - who all depended on getting their small orders under that policy - will be out of business before Thanksgiving.
Hurrah for Donald Dipshit - raising unemployment and canceling businesses wherever he can!
I wish I could be as optimistic as Robert regarding the saber rattling and the general state of affairs. Just because it would be illegal to send troops to Chicago doesn’t mean it won’t happen as illegality means nothing to the current regime. The search of John Bolton’s residence may be a turning point in the fascist regime’s step toward total authoritarianism as this could happen to anyone. As one writer pointed out, there was a search warrant signed by a judge so what’s illegal can always be made legal, especially if the Supreme Court gets involved.
What is there to prevent the conscientious active military men women now swerving from being replaced, when their enlistments are up, by the same racist thugs now joining ICE and the FBI?
I’m not ready to throw in the towel by any means; never to happen. But my optimism for the future of the USA is fading. We are only 6 months into a 4 year regime.
I am sorry to use vulgar language; he is a vulgar man and deserves vulgar language. In my opinion, Trump would make an a**-hole look good. Taking working people off cruise ships (working people!!!) is cruel and lazy. How about his minions find some REAL criminals, not chasing down people who are working in farm fields, cruise ships, butcher shops, or showing up to court as they are supposed to. Unspeakably cruel and short-sighted ICE workers and their bosses.
I was asked, this morning, "How do you go through the 'Valley of Death' and fear no evil?" The simple answer-"Walk straight ahead, not looking right or left". There is a lot of distractive energy right now, with Trump, his minions and a host of other disquiet people seeming like toddlers grabbing at the ankles of adults, and holding on as if their lives depended on it. I would be much kinder to actual children than I feel right now towards the "needy" adults.

It's becoming harder not to be disturbed. Trump is now creating special units that he can/will mobilize.

We always say "fall is in the air" and here in Seattle heat notwithstanding it is; and, also, something "muscular" is in the air...I can feel it.
