Thanks immensely for encouraging us not to go down every negative rabbit hole that may be true but because they instill fear and anger toy with our emotions and distract us from the actions and plans we must make. The soliciting for campaign monies that do this are driving me to ask who they really are. Your posts fiill me with hope and confidence that we're going to get through this because justice and democracy are the goal.
I too hate those surrender type endings people post on things about "Trump is never leaving", "there will be no more elections", or "democracy is over". They are living today in a future where they plan on losing. One of my pet peeves is "living in the future" about anything, when no one can predict the future. It's easy to do and sometimes I have to remind myself. But accepting that Trump will prevail at all, is ludicrous.
What happens if the Speaker of the House becomes incapacitated during a recess? Could the Democrats and a few concerned Republicans go to the parliamentarian and call for a new Speaker as the current one is not doing the job? There must be some mechanism in the House rules for calling the House back into session if the Speaker is no longer capable. Thoughts?
I listen to you every night. You give me hope. I do go to rallies. I belong to a woman’s political group.
I will be 75 years old in December. I work for an agency that works with anyone who is disabled in any way and any age and also anyone who is older, with or without disabilities.
People are panicking. right now.
One of my clients, who is a young autistic single woman with 3 children 5 years and under, is terrified about not having Calfresh and possibly MediCal.
I have elders who are Medi/medi. I have unhoused people, living under trees and we are going into winter.
These are real people who could go hungry and lose health benefits and possibly housing resources.
My job is heartbreaking and heartwarming; right now, more heartbreaking…
I do NOT want the Democratic party to cave in, but this hard!
I do not mean to be negative. For some reason, I am having a hard time tonight….
Self report: I mailed another batch of Vote Forward GOTV letters to Pennsylvania voters. Tomorrow is the last day to mail letters so, if you’re able, please consider volunteering even if you can only send five letters. Every letter matters! www.votefwd.org 🇺🇸
After calling, I emailed Senators Murphy and Blumenthal and Rep. Courtney to express my outrage about the unauthorized demolition of the East Wing of OUR Whitehouse and asked them to do everything they can to hold him accountable and prevent one step of his stupid ballroom project from moving forward. (We can dream…) I also emailed all three three to thank them for holding the line on the budget and for all they are doing to fight back against this lawless regime.
I also sent a curt email to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, tcook@apple.com , expressing my disgust for their complicity in providing financial support to the regime for the destruction of the East Wing in order to build a ballroom.
Do you think Trump is starting this ridiculous idea of him running for president in 2028 because of all the negative public response to him? Protests, etc? Crazy, right?
In one sense this is like the wasted energy of complaining about a partner leaving underwear and socks strewn around the house. It’s absolutely an affront to “respected-co-existence”, yet, if we want a clean house “WE” must clean it up. Whether “They Did This!” Or not. The fu*cking mess is still there and won’t clean itself up. Injustice is a pickle. We lost democracy NOT because of US. But if we want to rebuild democracy……….WE are going to have to clean up the sh*t. Yes. That sucks.
Great newsletter. I so agree: we need to be alarmed AND have a positive vision. We the People have done this before, so we'll do it again. I'm thinking of it as building muscle memory for the young'uns, so when the next fascist shows up, they'll know what to do.
Thanks Mr. Hubbell for being a light in the darkness and sharing the details in a succinct way so we can share them with any low information but frustrated voters we encounter on a daily basis. People may not want to know details but with traditional media failing us, this is great work that you are doing and I appreciate you. As I've said often, we are not going to lose our country to people that can't even pass a government budget lol. That said, can you include some more actionable items in your emails, especially with elections coming up next week? It'd be good to know some organizations or specific candidates who need our help that we can focus on as well.
Yes. Add this to the Project 2029 checklist: “When Democrats regain control of Congress, a first order of business should be the impeachment and removal of Judge Aileen Cannon from the bench.”
I'm glad the Dems stay strong, but now we have the President of AFGE (Federal Employee Union) calling both Reps AND Dems to end the shutdown. That's a lot of pressure on Dem Congress, and, of course, the Reps see an opportunity to blame Dems. I asked my 2 Senators and Congresswoman whether they could think of a way to support the federal employees who are going through hard times right now. Sure we can give to foodbanks (and we should), but is there another way? Response: crickets, or an email saying they get 10,000 calls... blah, blah, blah.
A site where you can donate to support fed employees. If 7 million+ of us can join a rally, surely we together can wrap our arms around these families and donate 'en masse' to show our solidarity, no? Our show of solidarity to support those of us who are having a hard time is a way to show Trump and oligarchs like Tim Mellon (who gave $130 million for vets - illegally) what America is really all about. Love, care, community. I wish I had come across this link much sooner; I wish we had thought of a way to help out much sooner, rather than simply relying on our Dem leaders to ride out the shutdown. My Substack friends, we need to be more nimble, quicker, faster, more creative to respond to crises, in my opinion. What say you?
I am still so frustrated by the corporate democrats who are the "leadership" of the Democratic party. I don't see them doing anything (billboards, as one example?) to get the word out that there is an emergency fund for SNAP and that Trump is deliberately withholding it because he cares more about staying in power than feeding hungry American (and particularly "red state") children.

Love the protest photos !

I totally agree with you!

The Republicans have the majority so it seems it would rest with them on how to replace the Speaker.

Robert, is this supposed “conspiracy” against Trump in Florida— actually a way to head off any information in the Epstein files?
