Thank you for this explanation. It really put things in perspective. Once again you generously sharing your knowledge has helped me to work through my anxiety and forge ahead in our fight against fascism.

"Trump suggests canceling midterms, White House says he was “joking.”" Underlying every joke is some truth. Trump would cancel elections if he thought he would get away with it.

This is a great Robert post. Encouraging yet realistic. The explanation of the use of the Insurrection Act was is very helpful. Pointing out that no election would mean no representatives and 34 Senators not elected and a majority for Dems.the Machado spectacle is pathetic and I’m sure the Nobel Committee is sorry they gave it to her. She will get nothing out of giving it to him. He is in bed with Maduro’s VP who will give him oil.

So sorry some feel you are yelling at us- that certainly isn't what I hear. I love your enthusiasm and steadfastness and commitment to us.🤩

It occurs to me that Trump's (and Machado's) pathetic effect on the whole Nobel Peace Prize process could have one bright spot -- in my opinion, there could hardly be anyone more deserving than the Hibakusha to be remembered as the last recipients of a 'pure' Prize, should something like that be the result...

I listened to the grassroots recording and have a couple of thoughts—suspecting I will get pushback.

I think it is normal and maybe even healthy to get weary and discouraged and doubtful about an eventual good outcome of this fight for democracy. But I think about the people before us who gave years of their lives in battles and in wars that seemed at times to be unwinnable. And giving up was not an option. Surely soldiers became disillusioned, discouraged, exhausted—all understandable. But at least in my veteran husband’s telling, they did not have time to dwell on that for too long—they were trying to keep each other alive.

So when soldiers were (again, understandably) “broken,” if possible, an R and R could be arranged for some healing and a return to the field in a better frame of mind to rejoin the battle and mutually pull each other up, not down.

Please don’t think this is a criticism of people who get discouraged or need a break because I think that is normal and healthy. But I also think that in the whole scheme of things we’ve seen Americans rise to the occasion even when things aren’t good at the time, and sometimes that means stepping away to regain our energy.

Second, as an almost lifelong Republican, who quit voting for Republicans a few years ago, I sometimes feel a little left out because we get hung up on party leaders and party strategies—that is a club that I’m not in. Interestingly, my volunteer peeps who are working hours a week registering voters and are protesting or whatever they’re doing are talking more about the fight, not the Dem party. I know parties are important, but I am also open to maybe new ways of organizing ahead. There could be positives to that.

Given Trump's penchant for receiving awards he did not earn (e.g. Nobel Peace Prize,) then the least we can all do is send the President those 4th grade ribbons and grade school participation trophies that (too many of us) have kept in our closets all these years.

Regarding the Insurrection Act, you can bet Trump's only read the title. Chances are more than excellent he has no idea what it is or what it says. Nor do his cronies, except as a cover for his further abuse of the American people.

I'm reading an amazing book about Winston Churchill which I'm sure many readers have read, "The Last Lion." In part 2, there is an extensive discussion of Hitler in the early thirties - years before WWII, when he was consolidating power and tormenting minorities. It is almost an exact match to what Trump is doing. It is bone-chilling. There was the same disrespect and outright trampling of the rule of law. Hitler just did what he wanted and what he could get away with. And, as we all know, it only got worse and worse. The British government and aristocracy were at least as craven and jelly-boned as the GOP is now. Cowardice, convenience, stupidity. Just like the tech bros, the law firms, the universities, and all who "obey in advance."

The silver lining is of course that Trump will ultimately lose, but at what cost? We'd best be damn sure to take back Congress.

What a lesson on the Insurrection Act; I'll need to read it a few times! But I get the picture and already feel much more relaxed about the whole thing. What a ride!! TY so much Robert! The Galileo piece is so fitting. I am one grateful member of this Substack! :)
